netmduser
I tried the line out setting and it really works! Some of my units do not have volume out. What do I set the volume to in this case?
KJ_Palmer
I tried the line out setting and it really works! Some of my units do not have volume out. What do I set the volume to in this case? Presumably that should say "do not have line out". It's best to turn off any bass/EQ settings, and preferably any button beep etc as well as getting a reasonable signal level. It also depends to an extent on the make of your portable. I've noticed that Sharp manuals suggest turning the volume right up to max, which I believe cancels the EQ settings anyway, and some Sony manuals (eg. for the MZ-R500) mention 27 (out of 30) as the optimum volume for 'connecting to a stereo system'. Obviously it would be best to experiment with settings till it suits you, it's all a bit of a compromise anyway.
netmduser
Thanks for the tip the 27/30 is a good starting point.
sfbp
I recall Avrin mentioning 23/30 for HiMD units. Not sure where that came from, or how general it is. Certainly their flash recorders' LINE OUT is equivalent to 30/30. I will look at the N910 which I think has that setting, and see the level. PhilippeC
A good test would be to connect the portable unit line out to a MD deck entry and to set the line out volume so that a recording at +0.0dB is possible without any distortion peak. Hungerdunger
I recall Avrin mentioning 23/30 for HiMD units. I may be wrong on this, but wasn't he referring to recording level? EDIT: Just found it - have a look
sfbp
That's a pretty interesting piece in any event.
