Jimma
I've just acquired a Sony CMT-CP33MD bookshelf system (or HCD-CP33 as it is referred to without the speakers) which is in great condition but the power supply board seems to have failed. I know it's a long shot but does anyone know where I could source this part or where I could get it repaired for a reasonable price. There appears to be two model numbers on the part. The one printed on the board is 1-677-889-12 and the one on the transformer is 1-435-368-11. I would think that it is the former number that I'm after as I would presume the transformer and board were available as one part. It's a lovely little unit and it would be a terrible shame to have to scrap it. Thanks for your help.
THIS SUCKS
if the transformer is bad maybe you could just buy that. it might be easier to find one that works.
Jimma
To be honest, I'm not sure if it's the transformer or another component on the board that is the problem. All I know is that I have no power and that the transformer doesn't get warm or hum when the unit is connected to the mains. It hasn't blown any fuses, either in the plug or internally. sfbp
Sounds like a Jim Hoggarth problem to me......

jonathanpotato
Sony transformers (TAM or BANDO) includes an internal thermal fuse on the primary side of the transformer. Sometimes it brokes for no reason or too high temperature ;-). Easy to see if the transformer is faulty : Unit unplugged (no power) and opened : Look at the two pins where AC mains 110/220 volts comes on the transformer. Connect your multimeter between these 2 wires and check for good continuity.... If circuit is closed (multimeter beeping), go to secondary side exploration.... If the circuit is open, the internal fuse is blown... The hardest part is to find the hidden fuse under the yellow plastic rounded tape and put another in place (cutting, soldering, etc...). DO NOT JUMP IT, ALWAYS REPLACE A FUSE BY A FUSE : If you have another serious problem (very bad circuit-shorted transfo by example) it can save you. slugbahr
I have a HCD-CP33 that has a non-working MD section. I am in Australia though. Can I help somehow?
Jimma
jonathanpotato the primary side of the transformer seems to be at fault but I can't see any sign of a thermal fuse and I've made a bit of a mess of the transformer trying to find it so I think that power supply is permanently dead unfortunately. slugbahr I don't know how you can help unless you're prepared to part with the power supply from your HCD-CP33. That would of course stop your unit working altogether which is no good. Thanks to all of you for the help so far.
slugbahr
As the MD doesn't work, I'm happy to have it scavenged it for parts. Taking it apart would be beyond my skillset, though. I might know somebody who could help me out if that was best for everyone. Are you in a hurry to fix it?
sfbp
Hang on folks. Jim H. has a huge variety of equipment lying around.. and I bet he can fix it.
jim.hoggarth
Sorry for the delay in piping up, not been on the site for a few days. I am sure I have a CP33MD main unit in storage somewhere, I will check to see. Unfortunately I can't find a service manual for it, otherwise we could also see which other Sony models have the same transformer unit, if any. Does your transformer have a Sony part number on it? These are always nine decimal numbers in a X-XXX-XXX-XX format. Jim

Never fear, I am uploading the SM as I type. The transformer (for the UK version) is 1-435-386-11 (US/Can is 1-435-385-11). Stephen
jim.hoggarth
Thanks Stephen, I now have that safely filed. And to original poster, I have found the CMT-CP33MD in the loft, and it works (at least it powers on), so a transformer is available. The unit still owes me quite a bit of money however, so I can't do it at a rock-bottom price. But contact me if your are still interested. Jimma
slugbahr thanks for the offer but I think I'll see if Jim can help me out first as he's based here in England which makes things easier. Jim, I'll message you regarding the power supply. Many thanks to everyone for your help Jimma.
PhilippeC
When I think that there are thousands of MD boomboxes in Vietnam so easy to find (and cheap).

No worries, Jimma The major problem was always gonna be postage - the unit itself isn't worth much to me, and I only got it recently, so no time to get attached to it, hehe. I wonder which'll come first: Me junking it or someone else needing it? Danny
