Question

Hi,

I'm new here and all but was just wondering if anyone knew if Sony are plannign to release anymore HDD music/video players or if they have plans to release much larger flash players? 8GB is not big enough for me as I don't have regular enough access to a computer I need my entire collection in one place. I also like it that way, anyway.

Cheers!

Hi and welcome to Atrac Life :)

I don't think we will be seeing any more hdd players from Sony. I would imagine they are concentrating there efforts on flashed based players from now on. We will probably see larger capacity flash players from Sony as time goes by.

It would make sense for Sony to release a new HDD player. A larger flash player would not be very price competitive. Sony has release 3 series of flash players since October of last year, but still has not release a replacement for the NW-A3000 series. It would be great if Sony released a 60GB plus model. However a 16GB flash player may be possible. We will have to wait and see.

Thanks for all that. I worry that Sony wont do more HDD players 'cos most people don't need them. I remember reading Steve Jobs from apple saying that their most popular iPod held 1000 songs and on average was nearly full.

Of course I also read that there's more money in video than music and people would need larger capacity to put a decent sized collection on to their pmp.

I do hope they release some sort of v large capacity, v large screen pmp before Apple. That would be some sort of way of steraling a march on them or something.

Otherwise change the psp so that it is both slightly smaller has a large memory and you can buy download videos and games.

I think that Sony will come out with a large HDD player. I'm really intrigued at the 'rumour' someone posted here - that if you go to video.connect.com, you get a request for a username and a password. That would seem to suggest a video store is coming, one possibly aimed at the Walkman brand as much as it is at the PSP and PS3.

I also think there's something neat about being able to carry your entire music collection around with you. Sometimes an old song will pop and shuffle and put a big smile on my face.

If the HDD based Walkman were to come out, it would probably A series(?) It will be nice to download Casino Royale, music videos and library of musics in addition to have higher bit rate files.

Personally, I am more interested in their S series in future... I can't wait to see what the new feature would be included. Current S700 series with built-in Noise Cancellation feature was really nice. Maybe for the next S series, the built in bluetooth and NC feature for earbud type headphones will be awesome.

As long as Sony Pictures and Sony Music execs calling the shots, history will repeat itself, and Sony will highly likely to miss the boat again, just as they missed the MP3 boat.

HDD's in portable media players and digital audio players aren't going to be around much longer. I read on CNET recently that Toshiba came out with a 16 GB flash memory chip that will start shipping in the fall. So just put a couple of those bad boys into a PMP and you'd have a high-capacity solid state device. There will be no need for HDD's anymore, which is all for the better because they are fragile and use a lot of power.

Makes sense, but is 32GB enough? My 20GB is already full with just music. Once you get photos and videos and pod/vodcasts, might space not be limited?

Or am I alone on this one?

my guess sony is betting against hdd, and probably going for high capacity flash, retake control of the market by being an innovator.

I sure hope so. A Sony 16Gb (or more) player I would buy instantly, no matter the costs.

I hoped they would issue a 16Gb A8xx player this spring, just a signal of strenght.

It would be expensive, sure, about €400,- or so I guess, but what now happens time after time is that first Apple doubles the capacity of its flashplayers, shortly followed by Creative, Samsung and Sandisk.

Then after half a year, when the new capacity is old news, there is Sony, last as always lately.

And I bet its gonna happen again this year

Pity, they used to be the first to issue new and high quality products, like the Walkmans and MD, and other companies struggled to follow, now it's the other way around.

Well, we're talking about a 16 GB chip that can fit into a tiny MP3 player, like a pack of chewing gum size. So why couldn't they engineer, say 4 of those chips into a device the size of most HDD players and have 64 GB of storage?

NAND flash memory chips keep doubling in capacity anyhow. No, it won't be long until mini-HDDs are phased out.

Now, what I would really love is a 100-120 GB flash drive for my laptop...

Hi!

I don't know if you have read about the new line of Walkman Video players? There will be two parallell series that consist of both flashbased and harddiskbased players. The "basic" series will have 16 GB flash, 50 GB and 90 GB harddisk players. The "advanced" series will have the same, but in addition it will have Wi-fi. Both series, however, will have bluetooth connection, allowing you to use bluetooth headphones. The size of the players will be approximately the same as the NW-A3000-series. But the screen will fill up the whole front size of the player. So the screen will be big and the player will be small. The controls will be placed around the edge of the player, and will be optical sensors. So the player will have no mechanical switches. The real genious of these players, however, is that the screen doubles as a solar energy panel. That makes the battery life almost infinite. The players will come with handy cases that protect the screen and at the same time let the daylight charge the player.

The players will still support Atrac, and in addition it will support Flac, Ogg, Wma, Aac/M4a, Mp3 for audio and a number of video codecs, including Nero digital. Sony will release Atrac plugins for Windows Media Player and iTunes, and also release a general plugin for other libraries. SonicStage will be upgraded to also include video. But the players will support drag and drop, in addition to using other libraries, so the users can have their own choice of music library.

The Connect store will start selling videos, and have cut a deal with the major Japanese and Hollywood film publishers. They also expect to start selling European films next quarter.

Ups! I must have dreamed this. Sorry!

Still no mention from sony for a new HDD Walkman. It would be a shame for them to stop making them. The NW-A3000 was a complete disappointment really. The HD5 was really perfect, they should just work off that. Maybe something like combine all the features and advancements of the HD5 + the slick looks of the HD1 to make an HD7 or something.

There is no question in that quote from my post.
