  1. A group you might like to join: If you haven't yet heard of the recovered earth photos from 1966, have a look here.
  2. Simply because its HK? In Japan these days, it's nearly impossible to find new products, though through pawn shops and used electronic stores you can find older models. See GuitarFxr's message here. As for HK itself, I know nothing, but here's something from the Community Pages. Here are a couple of other guides to shopping for electronics: here and here. Take pictures and once you get back give us a report here on what you find - or don't find. Bon voyage.
  3. Don't know how it might be done, but true random access would be helpful for long tracks, such as hour-length speeches.
  4. Glad you enjoyed it. I found it a rather tiring exercise in nostalgia. The best thing about the film was Cate Blanchet scowling in a black page boy. Been down with a cold this week and so have been watching more than normal. Last night was Sukiyaki Western Django, a film that is clever and witty in so many ways. Unfortunately the characters are entirely unengaging and it drags on for at least 30 minutes. It also looks and feels a bit too much like Kill Bill, another movie that suffered from the same problems. My advice would be to skip it unless you're a Japanophile or into pretentious movie making. IMHO, of course.
  5. It worked out - quite well, in fact. Have a more careful look at my previous message, including a link to a recording I made with my new machine.
  6. Yesterday my Nepali friend returned from his trip to Japan with something for me – a silver MZ-RH1. I ordered it through Amazon Japan and had it shipped to his brother-in-law's in Tokyo. All my friend had to do was put it in his suitcase and carry it home. Spent a couple of hours last night playing with the machine and am impressed at how different it feels from all the previous models I've owned, the MZ-R50, MZ-R909, and MZ-NH600D. Not only is it thinner and lighter than any of these, but it has some pretty cool features, which most of you here probably already know about. But who else am I going to tell about this? What's cool the display is a knock-out, so much easier to read than any other MD player I've usedthe left-shift directory on the Edit, Option and Recording menus was completely unexpected and quite a nice touchthe time remaining recharge displaythe stand-alone charger using a USB plug, first time I've seen thisbeing able to recharge through the computerthe replaceable remote clip (had to buy a new RM-MC11EL when the clip broke after several years of use)added functionality to the remote, including the equalizer and navigation at the Group levelmenus in Japanese or English What's odd The open button and the hinge seem oddly placed; my hand is most often covering the lid when the release popsthe redesigned remote, a reverse configuration of the RM-MC11EL with a separate play button is like having to use a left handed mouse the protruding record button – any idea why?no optical cable included (presumably because most consumers now record from computer) Did a little recording this morning, hanging my mic outside my bedroom window from 04:30 – 06:30. Have a listen to the bells of Shechen monastery.
  7. Just like the good old days back in the mid-90's.

  9. It seems to me the first half of the album is quite strong, some catchy riffs and hooks, but the second half is mostly forgettable. Still, it seems a better album than the last one. This week I've been listening to a wonderful 4-cd collection of soundtrack music, mostly from movies I've never seen. For a complete tracklist, look here: http://www.varesesarabande.com/details.asp...d-302-066-900-2
  10. A collection of melodic electronic music mostly from the 00's Can trade SP or Hi-MD. PM me here.
  11. Great story undone by poor script and directing. Most of the cast was great, but Donnie Yen really didn't fit in this kind of film. Trailer:
  12. Guitarfxr, we've known each other only a few weeks and entirely on the basis of a few posts to this board and an email exchange about a trade. It seems we got along just fine. Now one comment has turned everything upside down. It was not my intention to upset you. I have stated that it was not my intention. That I wish you no ill will, nor your friends, nor anyone anywhere. You said I am not what I first seemed, that a number of messages and other information led you to think of me positively. Is it not possible that you are misinterpreting one message, and that your original impression is correct? Can you let go? Can you see this situation uncolored by anger? Can you perhaps exercise the compassion you lament has so regretably disappeared from this world? (I apologize for posting this to the forums, but Guitarfxr stated in a private message that he would ignore private replies.)
  13. From AP: Cuban officials declared the recovery phase begun and many of the hundreds of thousands of evacuees started returning home. No storm-related deaths or major injuries were reported. Before hitting Cuba, Paloma raked the Cayman Islands, causing wind damage and flooding in the wealthy British territory, but no deaths. Your analogy is a exaggerated. If you wish the matter to drop, it is also unhelpful. I generally assume people mean no harm, even if they seem provocative or insensitive. Jumping to conclusions often leads to regret.
  14. It's the nature of high wind interacting with unsecured property. I suppose losing a piece of lawn furniture, a ball, or a frond from your favorite palm tree can be experienced as suffering and in that regard I can see that my statement was perhaps insensitive. I assure you I take no pleasure in the suffering of you, your friends, anyone on this board, the Cayman islands, the Americas or the world. Namaste.
  15. Yesterday I bought three pirated DVDs (the only kind you can buy in Nepal, btw): Hulk White Monkey Warrior (and a Chinese martial arts historical epic, the title of which I don't now recall) And on the way home I bought a bag of oranges. The Hulk movie was ok, the oranges pretty sweet. I also took some nice photos.
  16. I don't recall saying I took pleasure in other's misfortune.
  17. There are online banking options available so that you no longer have to visit ATMs. Yahoo's Wallet service is much like PayPal's, except that for payments it draws from a bank account instead of a credit card.
  18. When a typhoon shows up off the coast of Japan, people act like an earthquake is on the way. Having grown up in Miami, I love hurricanes. As kids it was great fun to go surfing in the streets and see what the winds had blown into our neighborhood.
  19. http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5g4K61D...SJQAWwiMaptxQUg Japan's Panasonic aims to buy rival Sanyo 1 day ago TOKYO (AFP) — Panasonic Corp. said Friday it aimed to take over its struggling rival Sanyo Electric Co. to create a new industry heavyweight better placed to ride out the current industry slump. The deal would result in Japan's biggest electronics maker and give Panasonic a bigger share of the fast-growing market for rechargeable and solar batteries. Credit Suisse analysts estimated a takeover could be worth up to 8.8 billion dollars. If finalised, a deal would mark the first major shake-up of Japan's consumer electronics industry in response to the current downturn triggered by the global financial crisis and a stronger yen. "The partnership was expedited considering the business environment," said Sanyo president Seiichiro Sano. Sanyo has slashed thousands of jobs and sold non-core operations as part of a massive overhaul in recent years, while increasing its focus on rechargeable batteries and environment-friendly technology. "The companies will be able to increase their competitiveness in areas such as batteries and energy-saving products," said Panasonic president Fumio Ohtsubo. The boards of the two companies agreed to start talks with a view to Sanyo becoming a subsidiary of Panasonic. "We would like to have a majority of its shares," Ohtsubo said. The company's fate lies in the hands of a clutch of financial heavyweights which are eager to see the firm revive its ailing fortunes. Sanyo, which started out making bicycle lamps after World War II, issued several billion dollars worth of shares to Goldman Sachs, Daiwa Securities SMBC Co. and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. in 2006 to shore up its capital base. Their stakes in Sanyo, if converted into common shares, would represent some 70 percent of the electronics maker's voting rights. Analysts said Panasonic would probably be able to negotiate a relatively good price given the current market slump. "The current environment will allow Panasonic to buy Sanyo at a relatively cheap price with few competitive bids," said Seiichi Suzuki, a market analyst at Tokai Tokyo Securities. "No one else other than Panasonic and some investment funds raised their hands to buy Sanyo, which means it is not a very attractive company," he said. Panasonic said it was interested in Sanyo's rechargeable and solar battery technology, and in return would share its cost-cutting know-how with its rival. Sanyo reported its first annual net profit in four years in May after drastic streamlining. But its fortunes have taken a turn for the worse since then and the Osaka-based company said this week its quarterly profits plunged by two-thirds in the fiscal second quarter due to a stronger yen and sluggish sales. It has been a troubled few years for Sanyo. Toshimasa Iue, a member of the founding family, stepped down last year after he clashed with the big investors over restructuring. The resignation came soon after the departure of its chairwoman Tomoko Nonaka, one of Japan's highest-profile female executives, following a scandal over alleged window-dressing at the electronics maker.
