I've never actually tried copying PCM **to** a 1GB disk. Whilst I can see it should be possible, I can see that Sony didn't think anyone would actually do that. (just me being ornery here). 1. Have you tried filling up the disk some other way, eg with 256k bitrate songs? 2. Have you tried adding songs one at a time filling it up from (say) 650 MB and working forwards. Does it always crash in the same exact spot? 3. Have you tried some different media? (other 1GB disks) 4. Have you tried some 80m media, too? (if this is no problem this may indicate some sort of alignment or adjustment methinks, as the technology for those is essentially independent of the 1GB disks). 5. Finally - every HiMD player warns you (on the back cover) about long transfers without enough power. Have you tried doing it with a reconditioned battery? Have you tried leaving it plugged into the mains adapter during transfer? Hope this helps Stephen

Not for microphone... record from radio I had to get my changer from japan, but the UK was the other place they seemed to crop up. There's 2 there now, one buyitnow for 55. Sounds like a steal, I paid almost double that, though I misguidedly tried to go with the FM transmitter option.

Sorry, there are no Atrac CD changers, only MP3 changers, from what I understand. It hardly matters (to me) because you can get so much on a single disk. CD changers are 10-a-penny but the MDX head units are hard to find, especially with MDLP. I lucked out with the CA790X, some guy brought it here from HK, because it was never sold in N.America. There's also a few head units that actually RECORD MD in the car, but they all date from before MDLP. FWIW I believe LP2 is plenty good enough for most (noisy) cars.

I've been missing settings for a while, my suspicion being that both you and I are "non-normal" members. (you're a VIP, I'm an ex-moderator). I gave up on writing for that browser already. Not to mention using it.

I just tried Xploder (version 6) too. It looks the same as yours. Firefox is fine. My guess is their updates finally broke all the crazy stuff in IE which is now gone with 7.0+. Stephen

In other threads I have strongly recommended the MDX-66XLP MD changer in conjunction with a Sony head unit. IF you choose one of the "right" vintage, you can also play back ATRAC CD's in the head unit, which effectively gives you HiMD in your car. What I mean by this is that any track that plays in Sonic Stage (as usual there are exceptions) can be transferred, essentially without conversion and therefore with no lossy-lossy conversion artifacts, to an ATRAC CD. Neither format (ATRAC3 or ATRAC3+) seems to skip, at least for me. (Wiz who has the 710, says different). You can even mix the two format types on a single disk. The head unit models are GTX-510,610UI,710 and also MEX-BT5000 and 5001 (these last two are bluetooth as well, the only bluetooth models I've been able to find with ATRAC support). Later and earlier models tend to lack ATRAC. Lower-NUMBERED models will lack the ability to control a remote changer for MD or CD. These 5 models also play MP3 disks as well as some other formats which I have not investigated, in addition to "ordinary" CD's. But who wants an "ordinary" CD when you can fit an entire opera cycle (eg Wagner's Ring) on a single disk with quality quite adequate for the car)? There's no HiMD directly in the head unit. In my wife's car we've put an MDX-CA790X with an old MDX-65 changer (no MP3, nothing fancy). I have the 510 with the MDX-66XLP under the seat. It's a fairly easy install, the slave required no power other than the single Sony "Unilink" connecting cable.

I have never owned one. But I believe most of the multitrack players will work "somewhat" with a standard MD. I think that means that they can import its contents, or play it, or "something". The experts here will tell you. Maybe it's just a coincidence that they are 4 x 37 minutes (or 8 x 18?) whereas the standard disks are 2 x 74. Certainly no relation with the HiMD technology at all; that all came later. There's lots of stuff on this sort of topic on the www.minidisc.org site if you poke around.

yep, even NetMD upload from RH1, I tried it out. Just no SB.

If it's Vista, my first thought would be to wonder if they (assuming they don't come from a browser pop-up) are coming somehow from the infamous UAC (User Account Control) restrictions in Vista. In which case there are some things you can do. I'm not the best person to ask, as I managed to avoid Vista in favour of W7.

Surely. Minis were better than Micras or DAFs, right? And they even brought back the Mini. Simple burner is great in a number of ways but it's a little limited (out of the box) in terms of allowed bit rates. There's another point that I have made repeatedly (though there are plenty here who disagree with me which is in part why I keep on making it) - the ripping of CD's AT 1411kHz using SS really doesn't work. Sony messed up (I believe in their attempts to have something FAST to compete with the other nameless brand), so by ripping at max bitrate and downconverting you get the worst of both worlds - poor sound and huge disk files. FYI if you are stuck with ripping via SS, then I recommend storing the files as Atrac Advanced Lossless. In its maximum bit rate (352kbps) it takes about 1/2 the space required by "raw" PCM, and is very quick (once ripped) to transfer to MD. It seems (although the name is a euphemism, it's not truly lossless like FLAC) that this will give you the most choices in the future. Also AAL is not encrypted, so the files can be moved around a network and accessed by other SS installs, which is NOT true of the other rips, unless you make the effort to decrypt them using the Sonic Stage File Conversion Tool. However there are other ways to get data there (onto MD). Many folks have commented that they like recording into the optical of a portable, the sound is better (in their subjective opinion). My preferred option is with a combo deck. MXD-Dnnn where nnn=3,4,40,400, and also 5C (ie MXD-D5C). Here you can choose between real time (best quality) or highspeed (about the same but will not do the Type-R transformation on the fly). The latter is good enough for almost any situation where I simply want to listen to the music on a portable or in the car.

See the post here. http://forums.sonyinsider.com/index.php?showtopic=25008&view=findpost&p=170816 It seems that we already responded to your queries on how to get going. It's hard to know what your problem is in light of the fact you never came back and told us what you did - we can't guess.

'The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable' There's the (well, a) clue right there. Try deleting the following key from your registry - it most likely points to something that doesn't exist. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sony Corporation\SonicStage\EMD\HomeURL If that's not the case then you may have set SS to have its music data somewhere not on your main hard drive, and the connection went down frequently. Try reconfiguring it, and make sure your USB is properly powered. Sharing the USB between HiMD and an external USB may have significant problems. I wasn't meaning to be touchy, but you really shouldn't shout.

Following your original question, I happened to do this. I titled (using PC and RH1) 2 tracks recorded at LPCM (1411khz) and then merged them by deleting the track mark. Everything worked perfectly, and the second title simply disappeared leaving a single track with the first title. I also merged a bunch of untitled tracks, but we sort of know that that works Could this possibly be a function of the fact you are using an RH10, and I am using an RH1? Added: I suppose this could all be because you are expected to divide first, then edit names. I never actually tried the other way so I can't say if it works or it doesn't. Bah humbug! They can not be. You could transfer them, edit them on the PC. That is your best option right now, assuming they are still transferable.

Since you never came back to us and told us the results of what we suggested to you, it's hard for us to diagnose your shouting at the world. Please go back, re-explain what ever it was you did to get things working and we will try and help. You need to tell us your setup (PC, version and sub-version of Windows, bits 32 or 64, including whether its a virtual version, cabling, MD being used, kind of disk), what MD software you used, etc etc. It sounds like you followed some of our advice, got it working, then it stopped. That usually arises from installing something else on top of a piece of software which then messed up a previous install of something else. It's often referred to as "DLL Hell". As a first step I would strongly recommend turning off Automatic Update. But you need to tell us what all the "some"s are. Of course if you just wanted to come on here and yell at us, then we can take appropriate avoidance action.

MZ-DN430 comes to mind, the so-called PSYC. I have one, it's quite good. There are several models, such as MZ-N420D and MZ-NF520D that were released AFTER the HiMD introduction, as well. Probably some Japan-only models such as many "just players" (designated by MZ-Exx) have been seen too.

HOWTO: S/PDIF Digital Output for MiniDisc Portables...
sfbp replied to raintheory's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
Hehe, I think I may have found DOUT on the Second and First generation HiMD's (and earlier portables too, it's just as mentioned, I don't actually care about those). This means that the circuit linked to by OP is not even necessary. We shall see..... -
If you use SonicStage to delete multiple trackS, watch out! I have documented a horrible bug where deleting multiple ***untitled*** tracks completely screws up the whole shooting match. Fine as long as you label (I use one-character titles for the purpose) every track you want to delete before doing it. I think the same bug applies to NetMD and HiMD both. There's no SOFTWARE as such. It's a function of the hardware, you need an MZ-RH1 (same as MZ-M200) and SonicStage + Windows, to be able to do this. Another way is to do optical out from a deck (not a portable) into PC optical in. This is not perfect (can have rounding errors) but is pretty good.
-
I am not 100% sure but I believe I know the answer to this. Don't use Sonic Stage to change the disposition of your tracks into groups. If you do the tracks in a group will be uneditable, I think. So.... edit the names before grouping them. Of course you can still do after grouping, using SS. The major editing operation that one seems to want to do actually on the portable is to divide titles, which you want to do before grouping or upload, anyway. There's another solution. Get an pre-NetMD, MDLP deck (eg JE640 or one of the pro "E" series - MDS E10/11/12) and there are no such restrictions.

HDMI isn't necessarily any better than component. On my system it is worse. However looking at p.13 of that manual seems to indicate that if you have your tv connected to hdmi out that a signal coming in from the video input will in fact show on the monitor. Check the section about tv control on p.78 too

{ still hoping you might be able to manufacture and try an Atrac CD. Worst case (you don't have a PC or Sonic Stage) I can make one and send it to you. } Here's an even more burning question (after reading the manual some more): are the tracks which you create by compression to ATRAC, truly exportable? It talks about encrypted oma files, but not clear to me if this means songs legally downloaded with mega-encryption built in (CONNECT or Mora or whatever), or whether this is the default similar to what SS does on upload to itself. If there's no way to get the unencrypted files off there then I am wwwaaaayyy less interested in this device. Stephen

Right, so this is why it ran out of bandwidth, rather than vice-versa.

I have noticed there is a huge amount of activity on the average page that was never there before. I wonder if there is some JS-based feature that has gone nutso? Look at the status bar (the one that normally says "Done" quite quickly, it seems to be transferring a lotta stuff even when one's page is apparently idly. Not sure why.....
-
For the future, the very best way (IMO) to deal with this problem is to underrecord, using the highest data rate available (PCM with HiMD comes to mind - LP2 will never be any use if you have to manipulate the signal because it's already significantly compressed, SP is not bad at all!). Then you can amplify without getting something horribly clipped, where the sound was too quiet. Don't overdo it though, you need a decent amplitude to begin with, nothing => nothing. Others (here) may have a more sophisticated approach.
