Well, I think we all want to know (at the very least I do), was that you who bought it (4,700 yen). If so, how easy was it and what was your final landed price, excluding destination customs but including shipping costs? I haven't actually done the auction service thing myself yet. Stephen

Haven't tried that, I admit. There's certainly 100% seamless operation with the 6-MD changer. No gap whatever. You can even (iirc) go from first track of a disk back to last track of previous disk with a single button press. This sort of thing was noticeably lacking from the 3rd-party (non-Sony) interface. When you reach the end of a disk, the next one is IMMEDIATELY playing. Honestly for me this would never create fury. I have never even looked for it, but I am sure I can try in a couple of days. I have the strong impression that there are no gaps whatever. Actually I may have even noticed this and found it quite annoying. I put a bunch of tracks on the CD, and thought that really they followed each other way too quickly. I'm on Sony's side, if this is the case! l8r -
Yes, Sony make all sorts of dire warnings about configurations of Windows that won't run. In particular they disclaim any version of Windows on a home made machine, which I find hilarious. I had to install SS on a Win2K3 server - held me up about 5 minutes while I told Windows to run the INSTALLER in a WinXP compatible session.... duh! (since W2K3 is essentially WinXP server). And I think they might even say that you cannot run SS as a user without admin privileges. How did you tumble to the administrator thingy?

Most Sony head units. I just got this one, a CDX-GT510 -
It is possible that there is a C-related problem. However I installed SonicStage on h:, and installed Ultimate from Avrin over top of it. I must admit, I did NOT do an install from scratch of Ultimate on h: And for the record, I never had a problem with 4.3 even the official one, relative to 4.2, on XP. The only thing that Ultimate fixed, AFAIK was the slow upload on RH1 problem, which I had been fixing by hand according to the posted explanation. Even now, that seems flaky, and I end up deleting those devices occasionally.

Argh. Another know-nothing choosing to perpetuate the common view by sharing only the negative. We know, and all those millions of Japanese really cannot be that far wrong.
-
There may be clues that during installation Sony "locks" some of the software to your machine or even to where it was installed. Ohhhhhh.... I thought you said it 'twas XP. Vista installs can fail because of UAC. Generally fixing to run as administrator will make these go away. I would be very careful if you have lots of music in your library. Otherwise, should be no problems. I have installed 4.3 over top of 4.3 too.

You can have the equivalent of HiMD playback in your car, though. It's called making an ATRAC CD. Amazing... equivalent to 4 std MD's on 1 CD at the same data rates. -
Yeah but like many beasts, it's pretty powerful

I've always installed sonicstage to d or e. The "common files" (OpenMG) need to go on C but that was never a choice. Something else restrictive about your system maybe?
-
What I mean is, if there are encryption or file problems of any sort, try to get the music somewhere safe, in case the behaviour happens to indicate something else bad is going on that will eventually cause you to change a lot of stuff and hence lose this file. But you are right: if it's really there, and playing, things are not so bad. Too many of us have woken up one morning to lost music, for one reason or another. It's best to treat SonicStage like a wild animal - don't trust it more than you have to.
-
Very quickly: if it's AAL there is no copy protection. Period. You can prove this by trying to play it from another SS installation on another machine, unlike the encrypted ones, which you cannot. Funny, my tracks are all .OMA in this format. The Atrac3+ file: can you play it? If so get it out of there quick (see above)! Another thing is to check and see if the WINDOWS property of the file is read only. Normally you only get this message when you are trying to look at the properties and you were already playing the file in SS. (perhaps you feel like snipping some of my quoted text: no biggie but I for one don't really want to reread all that garbage I wrote ) added: out of curiosity - if it was another uploaded, which model please?

This is me replying to my own post, something I don't think I tried before. It's now apparently open season on NH700 in Ebay UK. Two changed hands for < 40 GBP and there's a whole bunch (about 6) at quite low prices. I am almost tempted myself even though I have 4 of them already.
-
Exactly so. You can check and see the properties of the file, I think "Copy protection: none" is clear. But when it's an .oma will probably read "Copy protection: available". Right-click the track and look in the tab called "File Info". If you have a track like that that wasn't converted, it's time to find a way to get it outta there One option I would suggest is to get something that records the sound stream and make a .wav file by playing back the track to it. Does that make sense? I haven't ever had that situation, and all my tracks allow me to convert to .WAV anyway. If the track is unplayable, you are (for the moment) s****d but there is a faint hope that the linux-minidisc project can help some time in the not-too-distant future. Ah, yes, I remember. SonicStage CAN get itself in a mess. If file conversion fails, try deleting the track from My Library, but don't delete the actual music from the computer (there's a check box which is unchecked by default, leave it unchecked). Then re-import the file (from the F(ile menu). This seems to happen with WAV files I have imported (eg after editing with Audition) on a regular basis. This happens in at least one case I know of. Check the file properties and see if there is more than one file showing for the track. Multiple files are a problem because it can sometimes try to convert or transfer the wrong one. A good way to avoid this to begin with is to check the box in the same "Advanced Transfer Settings" dialog I showed you before, "Delete the converted files from hard disk after transferring". Note there are TWO of these, one for NetMD, one for HiMD. You may want to go ahead and delete the lower quality file (usually) from within SonicStage, and try again. I have also seen a case where My Library has a WAV file imported that cannot be converted to AAL, for example. Same thing, delete from My Library and re-import. No need to restart SonicStage unless you are totally paranoid. All this requires you have careful note of where the files are. Way back somewhere in my first answer I suggested you might want to move the files. This is why. Navigating to C:\sound is much easier than finding C:\Documents and Settings .. blah blah \ SonicStage\imported wave files\ . There is ANOTHER box (the last one in T(ools->O(ptions->Advanced settings) that should be checked, this way you can actually change file names (as opposed to paths) from within SS. To change only the path there is a "Move file" option on the context menu for every file in SS, but it's a pain to move lots of files this way. The other thing to watch out for, is if you have ANY copy-protected tracks, don't use Windows System Restore without asking here for advice first. Avrin is the best - I may be able to figure it out. Otherwise you may lose any tracks uploaded after the chosen Restore Point. Clear as mud? I hope I didn't overwhelm you....

I went to look for the Grundig in our MDCF browser, and while there my eye caught this, which I never noticed before MXD-D5C By sheer fluke there is one for sale. I have never seen one of these on Ebay. Some lucky person here should grab it.

When Sonic Stage removes the encryption, it generally changes the ending from .oma to .OMA. This may not be an invariable rule, and I am sure that you could rename them in either direction without affecting anything at all.

Ernst, you are restricted from uploading any recordings that were downloaded to the disk from a PC. However it is wise to get the later version of SonicStage, 4.3 at last count. On this website is by far the most reliable version, there was a slight problem for RH1 users who had also connected (NOT at the same time) other units to the same PC, which is gone now. Suggest very strongly you go here For a deeper understanding you might want to read this thread Hope this is the answer you needed. If you really really need to get stuff off those disks, there are four options: 1. Buy an MDS-JE640 (and some other possible models) and an optical input sound card for your PC, recording at playback speed 2. Record from lineout (analogue) into your PC though many people won't want to do that; also at playback speed 3. Hang around until the linux-minidisc project is finished and see if they have a way for you to do it with the RH1 anyway. 4. Find someone who is willing to do #1 for you. If you have more than 1 disc, they a$$uredly won't do it for nothing. Bear in mind this is all designed (by Sony) to protect copyright so you should have the rights to do that uploading. Things may have relaxed slightly even since SonicStage 3.4 because Sony basically isn't supporting SonicStage properly, however. Welcome to MDCF!

Reminds me of my first and only Cassette Walkman (actually by AIWA so not really a "walkman").

Have you used your deck (for recording) with any disks you had from before, any time recently? I'm rather afraid this symptom means your overwrite head has died. In this case, absent genius repair, you are going to have to throw away the deck. Sorry. You can still play back what you have, but any attempt to modify any disk will render it blank. Sigh.
-
I would NOT try writing to the the disk. Either play it back connected to the computer (if it's HiMD format) through the USB and arrange to record the sound stream (we can help you with that), OR play it back with the headphone out using a 3.5mm (1/8") stereo jack to the line input on your computer's sound card (you will have to do it this way if the recording is SP,LP2 or LP4). good luck and welcome to MDCF

Looks like he has boxes and boxes of them. More than 10 10-packs. How much would they normally fetch?

Siroe, Prince of Persia - Italian Opera (1728) by George Friderick Handel. This was the last opera but one before Handel was forced temporarily out of the Opera business by The Beggar's Opera by John Gay. The latter is acknowledged to be represent the re-birth of English opera, dormant since Purcell a century earlier. Coincidentally, Handel was the director of the Royal Academy of Music, which essentially went bankrupt that year. So he had a pretty rough time. Siroe only ran for a few weeks. This recording was off the BBC website - here are the details: http://www.handelhouse.org/handel2009/siroe It sounds great in my car on my new Sony deck driving the MDX-66XLP changer.

You would have to sign up with one of the auction services. I'm struggling to remember the name but I had a very good recommendation for one from someone for an outfit beginning with an L. They charge about 15%. I knew it began with an L www.rinkya.com Here's a link that shows about 5 of them
-
Thanks. My son is off on a trip to Japan, charged with getting me an EH930 and this is by far the best link I have seen to it especially the pictures which should identify it easily.

Try here You have about 24 hours to get organised........ (oops I had it wrong but right now I hope)
