What is the lifespan of a minidisc?
Sony_Fan replied to Sony_Fan's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
I had one minidisc that I bought back in 2000. I recorded music on it and when I played it back, some parts of the music sounded distorted and low quality. The same kind of low quality when you listen to wrinkled tape on a cassette. Then it hit me, the cassette records using magnets and so does MD. When you record/erase a cassette, the sound quality is diminished and so I wondered if the same would happen with MD. -
What is the lifespan of a minidisc?
Sony_Fan replied to Sony_Fan's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
That's what Sony claims. I want to know the real lifespan. -
How many times can you record/erase the following minidiscs, before it becomes damaged/useless? - 74 min - 80 min - 1 GB
-
Are you referring to DVD audio albums?

Sony should have allowed clear MP3 playback when their first NetMd models came out. I'm waiting for my M200 to arrive and I will gladly showed it off in front of iPod users who will look at my unit with curiosity and ask, "What is that?!!" Hi-MD >>> iPod.
-
Interesting. I'll have to wait til next week when I get my RH1/M200.
-
Let's say I transfer mp3s (no conversion) to my RH10. Then I take that disc and play it back on an RH1/M200. Will the playback sound be hindered because an RH10 was used to transfer the music, or will the RH1/M200 still play the mp3s clearly?
-
Looks like Sony is just going to roll out the last of the RH1/M200 they have, before they call it quits.

When I bought 10 Hi-MD discs last year from minidisco.com, they included a paper with a coupon code for 5 free 80min discs if you spend over a certain amount. I lost the coupon code and I want to use it when I purchase some of their products again. Anyone have any codes that work, or might work?
-
What about the bass? Is it more thumpy/stronger on the RH1? The lows are just as important as the mids and highs.
-
I understand the whole sound is subjective thing, but assuming you're listening to the same song, same bitrate on the RH10 and the RH1, which unit will have the better sound quality. I'm no longer looking for MEGA BASS, even though everyone should, but it's a 90's thing.
-
Okay, great! Now in terms of overall sound quality output, I've heard that the RH1/M200 sounds better than any other Hi-MD model. Can you confirm/agree with this?
-
So it's the RH1 with a mic. Okay, so how's the MP3 playback? Did they fix that? Does the RH1/M200 have better sound output than previous Hi-MD units? (RH10, RH910, etc).
-
That's what confuses me. Is the mic attached to the unit, meaning it can't be removed? Or does the mic come seperately so you can plug and remove it?
-
So you're saying is that an MZ-M200 = RH1 + Microphone. Why did they have to change the name just because it includes a microphone? So if I get an MZ-M200, it will have all the features of the RH1?
-
So I'm surfing the web trying to find a new MZ-RH1, but all I see is the MZ-M200. It looks like the RH1, but what's the difference? Is it compatible with the U.S. version of SonicStage? Thanks.

So I decided to see if there was a difference in sound quality when transferring music to Hi-MD using Simple Burner (SB) and SonicStage 4.3. All music transferred was in Hi-SP. My initial impression is that music transferred using Simple Burner sounds more CD like than when transferred using SonicStage (SS). The music transferred using SS on the other hand, had a little more bass response, but not much. How did I come to this conclusion? I transferred a certain track to Hi-MD using SB 3 times. Then I transferred the same track using SS 3 times. I put my earphones on and played the tracks in random order. Each time, I would guess correctly which track was transferred using SB or SS. I put "SB" and "SS" in the title of the tracks to know which tracks are which but I didn't look at the display screen until after I made a guess. I know my method is probably not scientific and fool proof, but if anyone agrees or disagrees feel free to share your ideas.

Well, for the past few weeks my g/f has seemed distant. We live together and I plan on marrying her, but now I'm not too sure about that. She works only Mon-Thurs, and stays home on Fridays. It's that day that I think she's out with god knows who. I work Mon-Fri. There's a been a few times where I've noticed things moved around at home, and certain things out of order (toilet seat up, place still a mess when i get home from work, etc.) Gives me the feeling that someone else was with her that day or she took off somewhere. Anyway, I decided to spy on her a little and find out what's really going on. So I set up my MZ-RH10 and attach a microphone to it. I set it at Hi-LP and let it record the entire day (Friday) when I'm gone. I set it next to the phone in our bedroom, out of site. So Saturday morning when my g/f is supposedly running some errands, I start listening to the recording. Nothing suspicious, until the 5th hour of the recording. The phone rings, she answers and says, "Hey, what's up? Yeah, he's gone today. No, it's too risky. I'll just meet you at your place tomorrow morning and by the way.." It get's cut off! Apparently the battery went dead at that point. Anyway, my question for you guys is, is there a longer lasting battery that i can buy for my MZ-RH10? Thanks.

If I install the Euro version, will it work with my MZ-RH10 (U.S. model)?
-
Assuming your tracks are in ATRAC3plus format, you can convert those to wav files, then convert the wav files to MP3. You would have to use a high bitrate to conserve as much sound quality as possible.
-
Full installer for U.S. please.

I'm having problems with SS 4.3 and I heard that if you don't have Windows Vista, you don't need it. I'm running windows xp, so I would like to go back to SS 4.2. Anyone have a link to that? Thanks.
-
For some reason when you convert MP3 to ATRAC3plus (Hi-SP), the sound quality is horrible. This was not a problem with earlier versions of SS. What changed in SS 4.3?
-
Is there any difference in sound quality between music stored on the 1gb disc and those stored on the 80min discs (assume it's Hi-MD format)? I can't help but think that something must have been sacrificed in order to fit so much music on a 1GB disc, even though it's the same size as the standard 80min discs. Sound quality maybe?
