UPDATE: The remote came in today, only 10 short days after it was first shipped from China, and it is a thing O' beauty!!! It goes perfect with my MZ-RH710 Black and my phones of choice, the EX85SL and the Q66LW, both in Black. BTW my other setup is an MZ-NH700 Silver with matching RM-MC40ELK and EX90SL and Q66LW, both in Silver. Now I can sell off all of my other earphones/headphones and remotes, and you guys get first crack at them!!! Details next week, and yes I do take PayPal. For those who criticize its right-hand-based location of the headphone jack, just take yourself back in time about 10 years ago when people like me had no other option and owned great units that were made in Japan like the MZ-R50 (my first MD Walkman, I have owned quite a stackful of players and recorders over the years, due to technology upgrades), where your OEM stock remote was the cool-for-its-time RM-MZR50 LCD remote and where both the non-LCD and especially LCD-displayed "stick-style" (which the 55ELK remote is) was not quite available yet (the first one being the 2002 RM-MC12ELK, some 4 years later), it may take some time to get used to having the phones jack on the right side as opposed to the now-traditional left side of the unit, but it's well worth it. It's like going from right-hand drive (UK and commonwealths) to left-hand drive (North America and most other countries). It should be a piece of cake, hey, it took David Beckham no time at all in getting used to it, driving on the right side of the road as opposed to the left like of it back in the UK.

I remember about a couple of US TV CM's that ran during the US heydays of MD (around 1997-99, when I was starting to get into it), with these two dudes explaining the many advantages of MiniDiscs over cassette tapes, as well as a couple of ads that ran in 2004 with the introduction of the '04 models, including, and mainly focused on, the then-new 20 GB (I thought back then, 20 GB???!!!) NW-HD1 Network Walkman as well as their ATRAC CD, NetMD, and then-new Hi-MD units and their then-newly-lauched Connect store, it looked some thing like a music video or something of that nature. If Ishi or anyone has recordings or downloads of these CM's, please either post them on YouTube or here on this topic, so I can have more MD advertising memorabilia to truly state that "I was there back in the day".

It's all because of my 10-year-and-counting loyalty to the MiniDisc family of formats (MD, MD-Data, MDLP, NetMD, and Hi-MD) after all, iPods don't record live on-field material too well, and some models not at all. True while it doesn't take Cindy Margolis' brilliant mind (I personally think that her brains alone are bigger than her somewhat trademark bOObs IMO, hey I went to high school with her in 1983-84, I should know) to know that you see all the sheep (including Cindy and now David Beckham) going with the iPod, but I just have a few questions aboput there little godsend from the folks at Apple: What happens if you're in the middle of nowhere and your internal rechargeable battery runs out of juice, as opposed to a mere "AA" battery you can replace instantly "on the fly", then what? What do you do if you run out of storage space in it? If you want to do a live, on-field recording, how do you do it with an iPod as opposed to a good-old MD or Hi-MD recorder, and, be able to edit that recording in that same or another unit (like my Pro model MDS-E10), after all, with all the DRM that iPods have in them, how do you transfer or share that recording to another unit? True while there are more and more iPod accessories available as opposed to the beloved MD NOW as opposed to back in our days when MD was king and everyone from Case Logic and other companies made dedicated MD accessories like MD wallets, cases, player carriers, etc. They are still out there, especially on eBay, just type in MiniDisc and set the location for "worldwide" as opposed to "United States", and you will find hundreds of NOS and used MD gear in great condition and ready to be used in your collection. There is also MiniDisc Access, and there is also MiniDisco, and even Audio Cubes II carries MD gear and accessories for them, don't forget, MD is still the hottest media format in Japan, and most of the stock they carry is from Japan. There is also yor regional Sony DAPC, in which they carry all the OEM gear for you particular unit, and even items available for other MD and Hi-MD models will work well too, pricey, but well worth it, and next to Toyota and Nissan, the MiniDisc has been the best thing to ever come out of Japan, period.

To continue the topic in its new forum, since almost all the stores are sold out of the RH1, I think you should get the M200 unit. It is THE EXACT SAME UNIT as the RH1 with the ONLY significant differences being the model number and the fact that the M200 is really the RH1 with a bonus ECM-MS70P detachable clip-on stereo microphone included in the deal. As my simple analogy goes, you can either drive the equivalent an classic 1960s air-cooled Volkswagen Beetle (real-time with Audacity, both it and the VW being legendary classics with the speed equivalent to 56K dial-up), or, you can go for a 2007 twin-turbo Porsche Carrera (with the RH1/M200, which is as lightning-fast as 7+ MB DSL or cable) Personally I feel that it would be worth breaking the bank for either an RH1 or M200, while your N510 and your legacy MDs can STILL be used to gether in your own preferred portable setup. BTW, don't worry, you can leave your legacy MDs' recording tab in the "protect" mode and still transfer your recordings to the computer. The RH1 "clones" the tracks and transfers them cleanly with ALL ALBUM AND TRACK TITLES INTACT and without erasing your disc. In fact, provided you use the supplied SonicStage 3.4 OR HIGHER CD instead of that measly SS 1.5 your N510 came with, you can even convert those recordings to the always-groovy .WAV format so you can then burn a CD of that recording to use as a backup in case either your MD gets corrupted of lost or if your PC crashes and you lose the program. It's up to you, like the analogy stated, "0-60 in 3 days", or 0-60 in 3 seconds, the choice is up to you.

For me, the RH1/M200 is a GODSEND!!! The capability to upload legacy format MDs (SP, LP2, LP4) is awesome, I no longer have to burn a CD of that finished MD just to load up to SonicStage (I had 3.1 and because of your recommendations here on the MDCF, upgraded to 3.4), but rather as just a mere backup in case my MD gets stolen/lost/corupted. This unit (along with the also-new MSAC-US40) has now become a permanent staple in my PC lineup and it has seen some good use already in my system, as now it frees up my NH700 and RH710 as personal units rather than as here-and-there downloaders for use with my CDs on SS 3.x. As for the remote-control issue in which many of you have recommended using the 40ELK rather than the supplied 38EL, I actually happen to find the remote to be more of a tremendous convenience rather than a bothersome cumbersance like some disgruntled MDCF RH1/M200 users have stated on this board, after all the convenience and advantages of having it available outweigh the necessary needs of it with this setup. That's why you bought one, right? Ever since buying it for my NH700 a few months back, it has literally saved the cumbersome steps of using the jog wheel on both my NH700 (the jog wheel contacts are worn on my CDN version of it) and RH710 (even though the menu shoices are different on both units), so I enjoy its ease of use and its ergonomic feel and it fits perfectly with my EX90SL IEMs (and NH700) Once you get used to it, this combination is a must for anyone who does recording at live shows, like I do. It 's a shame that Sony has decided to ditch the MD/Hi-MD format without regards to or even considering its loyal, hardcore cult following it has enjoyed outside Japan for 15 years, and it continues to be the recording standard used by on-field reporters and enthusiasts alike, remember, as the Source states in its now-forsaken Holy transcripts, ATRAC or DEATH!!! If you needed to know or if you were confused, I was talking about the 40ELK remote
-
Count me in too in my 9+ year loyalty to ATRAC, just remember, as the code of The Source says in the verses: ATRAC or DEATH!!!
-
Agreed on the case issue, that's why I go with vintage 1990s Case Logic Cassette and MiniDisc cases and belt packs instead, because if Sony won't provide one then we have no other choice than to go third-party aftermarket on this one. As for the pro bowling thing, I happen to be both a hardcore PBA Bowling fan http://www.PBA.com and also a die-hard bowler, and have been for many years, I used to watch the old ABC Sports Professional Bowlers Tour series with Chris Schenkel (R.I.P.) since the mid-70s until its end in 1997, and continue to watch the Denny's PBA Tour on ESPN during its 20-event season. When it comes to the all-custom look, even though I am only a league player and not necessarily a great 10-time tour champion like Tommy Jones or a Hall Of Famer with 8 majors like Pete Weber, I DO like the 'custom" look, after all you that you cannot be a great player with a mere house ball and $1.50 rental shoes, I agree with that.

When it comes to the ones in black, I highly recommend either the RM-MC35ELK Black or the RM-MC55ELK Black (I got one on eBay this past Friday) to go along with it, and, oh yeah, don't forget to get a pair of matching set of MDR-EX85SL Black to go along with it/ The 55ELK Black is available at this link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...p;rd=1&rd=1 ...and the EX85SL Black is available here: http://cgi.ebay.com/Sony-MDR-EX85SL-Headph...VQQcmdZViewItem I have this same setup, and you won't be disappointed!!!

That is why I stocked up on both MD and Hi-MD blanks, and also own 2 of each unit, the NH700S (for personal use), the RH710B (for my inline skate gear) and also the RH1, in which as soon as I pay all my debts I have been in for 8 months I will be getting a second one of. Having two of each guarantees that if first one dies, "second banana" fills perfectly right into place, because we all know today's units do not last as long as long as the units from 8-10 years ago. Now, POLL time: Should I now get duplicates of my deluxe remotes and IEM's, mainly the MC40ELK and EX90SL (for NH700), and the MC55ELKB and EX85SLB (for RH710), in case they give up the ghost, or not? I know I will have duplicates of my stock earbuds (E808SP) and remotes (MC21, MC60 and MC38ELB), but should I sell them off or are they worthless enough (mainly the MC60 and MC21 as they are non-LCD) to keep just in case I resell the newer (deadstock) units?

Good thing I got mine from B & H Photo & Video this month, I could almost see this moment coming. B & H is sold out as of one week ago MiniDisc Access is sold out MiniDisco is sold out Best chance now is on eBay oe one of the three remaining (as of yesterday) at Amazon Otherwise, you should get the MZ-M200, which is basically the RH1 with an ECM-MS70D microphone included. NOW IS THE ELEVENTH HOUR FOR OUR BELOVED MINIDISC AND HI-MD!!! ACT NOW!!!
-
Preferably a NetMD or Hi-MD remote to go with it, you'll find plenty of them on eBay or ask one of the guys on this board if they can get you one, I recommend either the RM-MC40ELK or 35ELK, as they are widely available as factory aftemarket items. Really, any Net/Hi-MD remote will work well with it, make sure it has an LCD display.
-
GOT IT!!! This morning I e-mailed the seller to inquire of when he would relist the auction and he replied within an hour! Here is my new remote and the auction listing: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...p;rd=1&rd=1 Thanks, Ray Jackson

All minidiscs and Hi-MDs are rewriteable, so fear not and just use the power of The Source, as Guitarfxr would say, for it is a powerful one.
-
But, if you truly want remote control capability, and the option and piece of mind of using a mic instead, get the NH700 instead from MiniDisc Access, hten you will be able to use the optional RM-MC40ELK remote in conjunction with it for most uses, so you don't wear out the jog dial on the NH700 unit itself, like I did on my main one. And don't forget, the option, as A440 mentioned, of using the RM-MC39LT AM/FM/TV/WB remote with it, available through Sony DAPC at this link: http://servicesales.sel.sony.com/ecom/acce...ortable%20Audio It says it works with the NHF800, but a many here on this board have found out, it should also work with the NH700 as well.

It was mainly because my inline skate (vintage 1991 Rollerblade) gear which is all in black, as well as my workout outfit that I wear when I skate. You seem to notice that black is one of my #1 favorite color, as described in my 20 QUESTIONS page on the almighty BIGHMW.com (log onto http://www.bighmw.com/20questions.html to see for yourself as well as my unique almost-25 year history with my former high school classmate, cyber-model/actress Cindy Margolis). You can also now log onto http://www.MySpace.com/BIGHMW to both see and hear my work as AK47, my new gangsta rap material I have been doing since 2004. But, myself being on old-school L.A./Oakland Raiders fan since 1982, Silver is my #2 favorite, as much noticeable with my Walkman setup of choice, my MZ-NH700 silver, RM-MC40ELK and MDR-EX90SL N.U.D.E. EX IEM's that I use for everything else. My new RH1 is used exclusively as an HI-MD/legacy MD uploader/downloader on my PC for both SonicStage as well as most of my photos and other documents.
-
Team it up with either an RM-MC60, or better yet, an LCD remote like either the 53EL or 55ELK (all 3 are available in gloss [jet] black) and a matching pair of black EX85 N.U.D.E EX IEM's and you will have a pretty damn sweet setup.
-
Hey, don't forget to hack it. The volume/EQ hack is at the top of this thread.
-
Don't worry, she won't know, cuz we won't tell. BTW, you should commended rather than condemned for getting as second one, as unlike the units from 10 years ago, today's units have been nototiously known for giving up the ghost prematurely, it's almost a must (and I will be doing the same thing to have two RH1 units, like I do already with the NH700 and the RH710), especially since the RH1 is the end of the line for MiniDisc as far as Sony is concerned
-
...and higher resolution and also it displays roman characters the same way as my 40ELK does for my NH700. Thanks, Ray Jackson
-
Thanks, Rich. I'll probably wait it out until whatever auctions of the 55ELK were up earlier this week get relisted. Or get the 53EL Black from Sony DAPC
-
Can anybody help me get a new black RM-MC55ELK remote as an upgrade from my RM-MC60 for use with my MZ-RH710 Black? Perhaps maybe Ishiyoshi or Guitarfxr (over in Japan, since they are a Japan-only model) can help me out here, and I do have PayPal, so give me a price quote and we'll see what we can do to get me one. I checked eBay this week but they are all sold out of the black ones. I know all of you recommend the 55ELK instead of a 53EL, as an upgrade from my 60 remote I would rather get this rather than use a 38EL that came wth my RH1, or the 53EL, which is available through Sony DAPC, which is the same as the 55ELK but with an inferior display Thanks, Ray Jackson.
-
It usually takes about 2 weeks to get to your door from the U.K. (not including going through customs, of course), so please be patient, I know from experience how anxious you guys must be to get yours. Three more are currently available through eBay UK, CLEARANCE PRICED!!! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Sony-MZ-RH710-Walkma...VQQcmdZViewItem ...and don't forget about the good-old volume/EQ hack, as this is a UK/European Version, with that notorious volume cap and no custom EQ's (until you hack into it, the hack is right here: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=9752 I already own two of them, so I will bow out of this auction, BTW, they ship mostly to Europe, buit perhaps could be persuaded to ship to other areas too.
-
Congrats dude. Better get a second one for just in case your new unit gives up the ghost. I use my RH1 for live recording purposes at concerts here in Port Townsend (mostly held at the American Legion Hall) but normally I just use it for uploading legacy (MD/MDLP/Net MD) discs to SonicStage or for mass storage of files. It has become an important staple in my PC setup. I have my MZ-NH700 Silver for personal use and use an MZ-RH710 Black with my inline skating gear for all the rest.
-
Sony discontinued it superior CD-IT tape years ago, but still manufactures the inferior normal bias (Type I) HF blank tapes. As for minidisc, Sony is still coming out with (but in scarce quantities) their Premium Gold series MD blanks and is also still producing HMD1GL (blue, second generation) blank Hi-MDs, but, you have to get them online, I recommend eBay, MiniDisco, or MiniDisc Access for availability of both blanks and MD-oriented accessories.

Welcome to the community Sparty!!! I'll soon check out your MySpace site and add you onto my friends list on mine, which is http://www.MySpace.com/BIGHMW (MP3's and video clips of my music as AK47 coming later on this month, so stay tuned!!!). Also do check out my official website, http://www.BIGHMW.com as well.
