Considering similar price as Nano, having video option is a plus not something to be criticized. Also, it shouldn't be compared to Video Ipod but it should be compared to Nano for they share flash, similar size (though Walkman's screen is twice larger than Nano) and price. Yet, so many critics compare with Video Ipod because NW-A800 series plays video and I find this little bit odd... Anyway, I agree video is kind of "gimmicky." But according to reviews I read, the video is pretty clear, good contrast. After all, we can't expect 1080p HDTV on the subway until Sony invents screen that enlarges magically or something like vitual screen(?).

Hi aznbro85, Yeah I was referring to AC-NWUM50. I read that they will eventually release in other regions. Anyway, thanks.

It is nice that Sony USA is now selling Bluetooth adapter. Anyway, I happen to be in US at this moment and when are they going to sell this charger so I don't always have to charge through computer (which they are selling in Japan)? Anyone knows?

Yes. According to Sony UK, the player has color OLED and capable of displaying the album arts.

Zizone's NW-S706F/Black Review (edit: 2007/2/22)
Zizone_ replied to Zizone_'s topic in Product Reviews/Pictorials
Well, you can still use your headphone but you just can't use noise cancel function with it. I use my MDR-EX90 headphone because it sounds better but when I travel via airplane or subway, I just switch back to the supplied noise canceling headphone. -
I don't have exact numbers to answer your questions, but the battery life is still long when using MP3; I don't believe there is significant difference in battery life when using MP3 and ATRAC. Using the noise canceling feature will consume more battery but you will probably get more hours of music playback than other MP3 players.

Well, NW-A800 is a competitor for Nano than Video IPod. So, with similar price as Nano, NW-A800 provides Video playback, much better sound quality and $50+ headphones. As far as I know, no companies provide nice headphones as Sony. But I have to agree with you that, I was also hoping to have nice slim rod shaped OLED remote.

Ascariss: They say that the side body is has similar material (metal) as NW-S700 series (in my opinion it is also similar to NW-A1000/3000 side metal) Also... this is where my translation into English is a bit off but... The front part is treated so that it has some... um... anyway feels good (I don't know good word for the way they described treated front). Anyway, they say that the overall body has luxury feel. According to the way they described the player, I don't think we need to worry about cheapness of the player. Both review says that the player has good luxury feel. The player itself is little bit thicker than nano but considering video playback and noticible difference DSEE makes on low kbps files, the thickness should not bother (it is not much thicker than nano, so it is indeed slim). Another thing is that the player is very responsive and fast. When the Walkman is connnected to PC, the Walkman Launcher launches, which has 4 keys options: music, photo, video, and download. The video can be transfered to NW-A800 thorough the Image Converter3. It says, it is possible to drag and drop the video files but because it is harder to set directory of the files, it is advised to use Image Converter 3. There are AVC Baseline 768kbps/30fps and AVC Baseline 384kbps/15fps video modes in the Image Converter 3. Even PSP's H.264 is similiar to NW-A800's H.264, PSP's cannot be played because PSP supports "Main Profile" but NW-A800 supports "Baseline Profile." (I don't have very good understanding of video file formats so they are sort of losing me here, sorry . However, you can conver "Main Profile" into "Baseline Profile" through Image Convertor 3, so you can play PSP video files with this conversion. Also, they say iPod's H.264 and/or Video Podcast seems to be playable through NW-A800 if they do not have DRM on it. This part is good news: there will be video stores (Japanese ones like P-TV). It seems like amazon's coming video store may substitue in US side (amazon is my personal prediction, they did not mention this one). When viewing the video, you can 10/30/100X skip or back with very good response without getting stressed You can enlarge or make it smaller, full mode, off mode which is the file size as is, and Zoom. If you play the video with Walkman Highquality, the resolution and contrast is good, and they recommend Walkman Highquality especially if you are watching thing with subtitles. However, the viewing angle is not so great so it is hard to watch with many people. It seems like not all parts of software fully supports Vista yet. Music: Sound quality is good as NW-S700 series or better, especially if you are playing low kbps files with DSEE (difference can be heard). Music transfer speed is not that great, but normal to slow. It supports Clear Stereo, Clear bass and DSEE. It Seems like they can tell difference when DSEE is on and off; when DSEE is on much more high pitch sound details are noticeble. Overall, the play seems to be very complete and one strong competitor againt Nano. The enhanced sound qualit, video playback and nice headphones seems to be very nice factor and a nice deal for the price. I would like to note that this is not my review but bits of pieces from following sites: http://plusd.itmedia.co.jp/lifestyle/artic...09/news091.html http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/av/docs/20070309/np001.htm

I checked out the links you provided. I like the way they said the player has luxury feel. Anyway, both review seems to say that video function is nice but it is not the main attraction of this player. It seems like that sound quality is good as we hoped according to them.

Actually in some songs, which I am very familiar with like 陵辱の雨, I can tell difference between 320kbps and lossless (the background effect with is very subtle is missing). Whether people listen to compressed audio or not depends on people. In fact, there are people who has no knowledge regarding to compressed audio.

Though in NW-A1000/3000 series with the glossy had some problems, I would still prefer for my DAPs with the glossy surface at least for small DAPs like NW-S or NW-E serieses. The glossy surface for NW-S600/700 series is better than the NW-A series in my opinion. As for the NW-S700 series, The surface fits properly (no squeaking and etc.) and twice brighter color OLED (compared to NW-A1000/3000) is visible under sun light but the quality is reduced. But if Sony can make screen brighter in next gen NW-S or NW-E series, then I do not think having this glossy surface would be a problem. I prefer this sort of glossy surface with some rounded shape on my NW-S series (it is not that rounded; good balance between flat and round). I think this rounded shape is to change light refraction so the screen is more visible than if the surface were flat under the sun light. Anyway, I agree with Ascariss on that we can't judge a product without using it. It seems like so many people (including the site writer and people who comment) bash product (i.e. engadget.com which I don't visit anymore due to this very reason). Also, so many people just convert currency and claims as if the converted currency is the price in U.S. Some claims that NW-A800 series would be $400 and start bashing (I hope we all know that simply converting currency really means nothing)... Yet, having no knowledge of global market they call themselves the leader in gadget news... Actually, I don't know where I am going with this one Oh, and I also buy CD only like Ascariss to convert them into ATRAC Advanced Lossless and for booklets with some extras.

I really didn't know where to post this at first, but since Sony is releasing new flash based Walkmans I am going to add one small wish list for possible firmware updates for current and future Walkmans. I believe most of us use EQ on our Walkmans, which provides preset options and 2 custom ones. But since no EQ setting works for all types of songs, it will be really nice to have specific EQ settings we choose to be saved for each songs (custom settings not being limited to 2 but unique customs for each songs and saved for those particular songs). This is just my small wish and just wanted to share with people. Thanks.

As for Japan, there is silver in addition to violet and black for 8GB models. I was actually hoping to have same cover as NW-A1000/3000 on the front, but I guess people didn't like that(?)

I think the volume is capped because of the European law. So unless Europe changes its law, I don't think Sony can do anyting about it.

This is just about Sony's online support but this new "Home (free)" is very interesting and has huge potential. I hope this will not lock regions but have world wide server.

NW-A800 series is very tempting to buy considering it has very nice screen, DSEE, and $50+ headphones being supplied. But, I personally enjoy small stick like DAPs with Sony's Jog Shuttle (really easy to use and again small!). In the past, NW-E400 series did not have as good sound quality as to MD players or NW-A1000/3000 series though better than nano. NW-S600/700 series really have one of the top sound quality with this small size. Also, I don't need big screen, NW-S700series display is perfect for me; in fact, it displays jacket or album arts pretty well. My NW-S706F has Noise Cancel function, color OEL display, and most importantly incredible sound quality, so I am staying with it until Sony releases next gen NW-S or NW-E series. I hope Sony will continue to produce this small stick like DAPs in future. Oh, it is my personal thought: NW-S and NW-E series have the better design than NW-A series. Usually, small gadgets looks better than bigger ones.

Dachande: I just use the jacket uptained from SonicStage (just right click and click search for jacket). Then image will load up and just drag the image to the album. As for why it is not doing it automatically, I don't know. But when you download music from Connect, the jacket is loaded automatically. gloomyjewel: I take that each songs have pictures not just album right? What type of image file are you using? It is a dumb question but you are using SonicStage 4.1 or later? I think previous versions did support displaying jackets on computer but does not support transferring to NW-S700 series. Honestly, I have never seen this problem. Sorry for not being much of help.

I was just looking around US sonystyle.com and found they are selling WLA-NWB1. It seem like Sony USA is supporting more accessories for US customers, which is good news, but little bit slow in providing accessories and still lacks varieties compared to Japan and Europe.
-
I think the price is very nice for the stuffs Sony is providing for the NW-A800 series, especially the headphones which is pretty expensive to what other companies provide.
-
How did you transfer your jacket to your songs? Did you click property on the album then located your jacket file or did you drag the file to the album? After dragging jacket to the album, then the message will show up asking to implement jacket to all the songs within that album. Sometimes, this helps.

Maybe it has something to do with your file in MPEG-2 instead of MPEG-1? I've seen MPEG-2 Layer 2 but this is my first time to see MPEG-2 layer 3. I believe what people call MP3 is MPEG-1 Layer 3 or at least most widely used ones. Have you tried MPEG-2 layer 3 play on other devices? Please correct me if I am wrong about anything

Well, if you are saying Sony is just reinventing what other companies have achieved, then one can also say other companies just reinvented what Sony did in the past; after all Sony invented portable audio player and compressed music DAP (MD players which started in 1992). Also, Sony released DAP with video play back in 1999. Anyway, I believe your point is Sony needs to provide something unique while keeping all other functions provided by other companies. It seems like Sony is doing just that or starting to: like built in noise canceling function on NW-S700 series. Also, it is important to note that Sony is providing some nice headphones ($50+) on NW-A800 and NW-S700 series while other companies are providing only what $10 headphones (thing that people seem to miss).

Sony LCD TV sale ranked #1, SonyEricsson profit tripled, sold 1 more million units (5.5 million units) of Walkmans compared to 2005 in 2006, Blu-ray tripled sales of HD-DVD, and their share is on the rise for this week. They are infact doing pretty well. Also, PS3's first release sales are stronger than PS1 and PS2. MI3 is by Paramount.

Deleting songs from Playlist will not delete songs from the player. That is because the Playlist does not represent physical data stored on the player. In order to delete your songs from the NW-S703, view album or artist through SonicStage then delete from there. Also, if your songs have DRM then you can not import the songs from the player. So, when you import songs from CD, uncheck the copy protection box (normally it is unchecked as default). If you are still confuse PM me.
