Zizone's NW-S706F/Black Review (edit: 2007/2/22)

on the following link, one of the member, theFanboy, wrote simple instructions for the playlist playlist "in sonicstage, in the mylibrary box, on the right side you see a small box to select called create/edit playlist. Select that. list of current playlist section will open on the right side. now on left side (my library column), select all the songs you want and click the blue arrow, all selected song list will appear on right side, choose an appropriate name for the current list and select close edit. now on the left most column, select view as albums/playlist. my library will show all the playlist. select appropriate ones, transfer to your device (by theFanboy)." so basically, 1) click "Create/edit playlist" on the right side. 2) Choose songs for the playlist and transfer. Once you created playlist, close the playlist 3) on the left most column, select view as "albums/playlist" 4) from the "playlist," transfer to your device -
No problem^^b I think read somewhere that Sony and Toyota are going to joint venture in OLED just like how Sony and Samsung worked together for LCDs. I was wondering, does Toyota have any electronic department? Toshiba and Matsushita are also working together then is Sharp going to work alone? I was just wondering about this lately... I don't really think Sharp is going to work with any foreign company like Samsung though... Considering the fact that Sony had alot of pressure from the Japanese government for working with Samsung... though it worked great for Sony for re-taking #1 spot in TV market. This is just my random thought lately... Anyone who has more information, please share with me. Thank you.

Well, NW-S600, NW-S700 and new NW-E010 series are not monochrome. These devices have color OLEDs. When people write about lifespan of OLED (OEL), they are very ambiguous; probably, most of those who write about OLEDs are not experts on this type of display. When they say the OLED has short lifespan, they are comparing to LCDs, though they don't give specific lifespans of either displays. Anyways, current OLED's lifespan is indeed shorter than LCD's; however, for the purpose of DAP uses, it shouldn't really be concern, since the display is not turned on all the time compared to TVs usage time. It seems like the lifespan of OLED have been increased, considering the fact that Sony is bringing 11 inch OLED TV by the end of this year or early next year (they have mentioned bigger size OLED TV as well); also, Toshiba and Matsushita (Panasonic) are working together as well.

MDR-EX82 13.5mm headphones supplied with the NW-A800 series, which makes this player a very good deal.
-
oh I meant maybe it can. Only files I tried are Atrac3plus not actually Lossless. So, I put that maybe. It will be nice if PS3 can actually do that. I hope I didn't cause any confusions.
-
There are alot of errors on Wikipedia. I own PS3 but I can't seem to import musics in ATRAC Advanced Lossless format from CD. But I can connect Walkmans and play music. Maybe, when I am playing musics from Walkman then it may be playing Lossless. Far as I know, only NW-S600, NW-S700, NW-A800 and PC can play ATRAC Advanced Lossless.

First of all, I don't know for sure. But I think if the song is recorded in a certain way for bass like (1,2,1) then I believe the clear bass raises to 2,3,2. Where as, the individual EQ raises individual numbers: e.g. from 1,2,1 to 2,2,2 if you raise the first EQ bar. So, I think the clear bass keeps the prerecorded setting but raises overall bass without distortion possibly by smoothing things similar to anti aliasing for videos ; while the 5 band EQ can change the prerecorded settings. Note: numbers are in order of lowest bass to highest. numbers assigned randomly to describe. I may be totally wrong though...

No problem But I just have to say that NC is a really nice feature though. It is in fact the only feature that is really not considered as a gimmicks like album art or video. Anyways, if you don't regularly need NC, since you mostly listen to music at home, I believe you will be happy with MDR-EX90
-
Well, the difference made by MDR-EX90 is significant enough for me to use MDR-EX90 instead of MDR-NC022 (unless you really need NC feature). The sound between MDR-EX90 and MDR-NC022 (when NC if off) is quite different; it is really hard to describe sound in terms of words but I can say that is crisper (like 1080p and 480p difference if I were to compare in terms of TVs). When I say the headphones feel light, I meant that actual weight seems to be lighter (no headphones does not feel like it it were falling off from the ears). It may feel lighter maybe because MDR-NC022's extension cord is a bit heavier. I can definitely tell the difference between two headphones without knowing which one I am using. The difference is pretty obvious. I also listen to classics and MDR-EX90 sounds much better at this genre of music because of much less hiss sound. The difference is very noticeable, and MDR-EX90 replaced my MDR-NC022 for me (usually the environment, where I listen to music, is pretty quite and NC is somewhat unnecessary for me). The use of NC really depends on people and environment. I believe, when using NC then music quality is somewhat reduced, especially when NC is used in really noisy area. Anyways, the difference is significant enough to notice two phones without knowing which one I am using. The sound is, again, much crisper and has better separation. Considering the MDR-EX90 is $80 and up, so it is really up to the user if the difference is worth the money. As for me, it is worth it. Since you are listening music at home, NC feature not really necessary and MDR-EX90 will give you much clear (much reduced hiss), crisper sound. I really believe that NW-S700 sounds better with MDR-EX90. And when you do need NC feature, you can just swap the headphones, which is what I do.
-
MDR-EX90 fits just same as MDR-NC022 but the former feels slightly lighter. When using MDR-EX90, you will hear the outside/ambient noise much more than MDR-NC022 since MDR-EX90 can't not provide noise-canceling feature. But when the noise-canceling feature is off, MDR-NC022 seems to be little better in making a tight seal. As for the volume, MDR-NC022 seems to be louder. Volume 2 for MC022 seems to similar to volume 4 or 5 for MDR-EX90. But as the volume goes up, the volume distinction become more narrowed. So, at low volume MDR-NC022 sounds louder but at high volume they are about the same. But the volume shouldn't be much of a problem for both headphones. MDR-EX90 provides much better sounds. It provides much crisper sound, separation and higher frequency, but MDR-NC022 seems to provide better bass. So I just use one notch higher clear bass for the MDR-EX90. e.g. if you listen to rock music, the guitar and drums sound is crisper with MDR-EX90. I don't know whether I answered all your questions, but if you have more please let me know.
-
Yes, indeed the MDR-NC022 is a very nice headphones and it is very nice how Sony is providing nice headphones in current line ups, e.g. NW-S700 and NW-A800 series. For this reason, I think Sony has one of the best deal. Now, the only thing they need to improve seems to be a better software that comes with Walkmans; I heard that SonicStage is going to be replaced (?). I am just waiting for this official news and hoping that it isn't just a rumor.
-
Well, like I said before, to use Noise-Canceling feature MDR-NC022 is the only option. Even turning off the Noise-Canceling feature, the background hiss is pretty noticeable (not much difference from having Noise Cancel ON). But when using MDR-EX90, there is really a huge reduction in hissing noise. And, yes both headphones use same size driver but MDR-EX90 has a larger frequency range (5-25000Hz) and max input 200mW compared to MDR-NC022's 100mW and frequency range of 8-22000Hz. As you can see, there are significant difference between two headphones. Also, the sound difference between two using NW-S700 series is very noticeable, e.g. when using MDR-EX90: significant reduction is hissing noise, better separation and better production in high frequency sounds. Lastly, I am using MDR-EX90SL so the extension cord is being used as MDR-NC022. But I don't get the hissing problem with MDR-EX90SL. It is very difficult to write the difference, so I suggest go to stores and try it to hear the difference on your NW-S700 series.
-
If you don't mind giving up Noise-Canceling feature, I strongly recommend MDR-EX90. There is a noticeable improvement in separation and also in higher frequency. But most importantly, the hissing noise is greatly reduced, MDR-EX90 will make hissing problem a thing of past (I can say this with confidence; you can appreciate how quite this player really is). You will be surprised that NW-S700 series can produce noticeable sound improvement with MDR-EX90. If you know anyone who has this headphone, just borrow it and try it at least.
-
The static sound can be eliminated by turning off the screen saver (when ever the the screen saver pops thats when the static sound occurs). The hissing sound can be significantly reduced by using other headphones, e.g. MDR-EX90 but then you will lose NC feature (most of the hissing sound is caused when the MDR-NC022 used). But the hissing sound is not really a problem once you are in a noisy area; it is really a problem in a quite environment though... As for the transfer speed, yes I agree it is not fast. But considering it is 4gb player, I think it is ok but not great in transfer speed. What really annoys me is that I have to use supplied extension cord which get heavy on left ear due to the connecting point. Since we don't have any remote use for MDR-NC022 I hope the cord is longer without using the extension cord. I think the headphone is shared with those newly launched external Noise Canceling devices; so probably this is why the cord is short and the extension cord is supplied.
-
You will be playing ATRAC Advanced Lossless, not lossy version; just like NW-S700 series plays ATRAC Advanced Lossless not lossy
-
The sound quality difference will be really noticeable when the noise-canceling feature is on, which allows one to hear much more detail in noise area. I'd say, just for this built in NC feature, it is pretty good deal at current price.
-
I don't think you will have any problems. Everything in the player uses English (menu, options etc.). I am using Japanese Windows, but from my past experience NW-S706 will work with any versions of Windows. I personally don't know why so many East Asians nations uses English... There seems to be some cool factor among people but personally I dislike it; I don't mean that I hate English or anything... But I believe our languages are as appealing as any other languages and should at least be used in its own nation when there are words in our language...

you can also just drag and drop. Drag the album art that appears when you click search for jacket/album art on internet and drag that picture to your album. Then all the songs within that album will have pictures. When you drag to that album, there will be a message saying something like "do you want to implement the pictures to all the songs" (the quote is not exact words you will get since I use Japanese SonicStage I don't really know what it will say in US version).

Zizone's NW-S706F/Black Review (edit: 2007/2/22)
Zizone_ replied to Zizone_'s topic in Product Reviews/Pictorials
The WM-PORT is found on the player (similar to Ipods). So, to connect the player to the PC requires the cable, which is supplied. Once the player is connected, you many use the player as a usb drive without using Sonic Stage. The most important difference between NW-S700 series and NW-E010 series is the built in Noise Canceling feature found in NW-S700 series. The NW-S700 series supplies MDR-NC022 noise canceling headphones (small microphones attached to the each headphone to detect outside noise). Due to this feature, the price is higher than other players. But the price is not really high, since if you were to purchase Noise Canceler separately, this will cost about $100. Also, NW-S700 series has all the necessary parts within the player so one need not carry around outside noise canceler device, which makes life a lot easier. SonicStage is not the only software to manage NW-S700 series. But if you use linux, I don't know which program is available. Sorry, I am not very familiar with Linux. But the latest SonicStage 4.3 (as of 2007-3-18) isn't bad as what people say in many sites. Many people have not even used the lastest software but only older version in past years and criticize the SonicStage. The SonicStage isn't the perfect but it does what it is suppose to do. It NO longer forces you to put DRM on your songs, and support many formats without conversion into ATRAC: it supports: MP3, WAV, AAC, WMA, ATRAC Advanced Lossless. As for the Windows, one software that I know of is available in Japan: it is called Beat Jam 2007, which can be used for Sony Walkmans and other MP3 players from different makers. Lastly, what engadget says about the price of players is absolutely wrong. So, if you are looking for the price of the player, never believe what you read from that site. To get correct pricing, refer to your region Sony site. Engadget and others simply convert currency into US Dollars but this does not represent true price. For example, Engadget and anythingbutipod.com seem to say the NW-A800 is something like $400 but actually the player is in $200 range. -
Actually, the new E-series does have FM tuner. I know someone asked this previously but I can't seem to find the answer. If you don't mind, what do A, S and E stand for? Thanks
-
Well, if they are not supplying the soft bag, at least they can sell one but they don't... and I really like these bags than leather cases.
-
I think you can change that 2 seconds into 0 seconds in SonicStage when making ATRAC CDs or regular CDs.
-
Here is a picture of NW-E010 showing its capability of displaying album arts.
-
I am wondering why Sony stop supplying their sort of trade mark soft bag for their Walkmans (something that started with MD players I believe). Since they no longer supply these bags with the player, I just use black bag supplied with NW-E407 in the past for my NW-S706F from getting scratch.
