  1. yes, take cover off then look at pic of the drive unit you will see two white block bits, the inner to the right broader one first, give it a wee push towards the front, only about quarter to half an inch or so, just till it stops, that lifts the disc out of its sort of play position and lines it up for eject, then the other to the immediate left, it has what looks like teeth and a spring on, you should now be able to push that one all the way till it stops and then you can take the disc out of the front of the deck in the usual manner, the deck should now switch on, after that you are back to replacing the belt, plenty of links within posts on this site where to get "good ones" from of course dont force anything.
  2. usually means there is a disc stuck inside, make sure thats not the case before we go any further, otherwise known hereabouts as stuck in stand by and your belt change might not have gone aswell as you thought,if thats the case, dont worry its easy to get out.

Have now recieved the deck, easier than expected, replaced the long spring for the eject as somebody had put a silly thing there, hopefully seen in the gap in the pic, noticed a possible repair with what looks like superglue to the owh mount, the belt had been replaced with something a tad thick for my likeing so replaced that and the good news it all works and records and writes toc too so success, over pic of deck in deck inside pics thread

this is gonna be a challenge, could have a bit of fun and frustration with this one, somebody has messed up replacing the eject belt and knackered the springs, really you can only knacker one, more info when i get it, comes with spare belts remote and owners manual, going by the pics, i know where the long spring comes from and i have one from a mdm 7 drive i broke for spares some time ago, as for the small one on the side, unless ive used it, thats the one that will make things interesting, on ebay compleated listings if anybody wants a look see !!
  7. Here is a pic of inside a je470 showing all the unpopulated i/o ports, also shown is the pc link connection for refrence, if you have a 480, from what i remember adding any extra i/o ports is a no go as there is nothing there, wonder if the 470 mainboard has similarities to the higher 770 model.
  8. true stephen, thing is the usb was/is convenient even though sonic stage was rather crap, still handy for titling discs though, otherwise i found that with sonic stage transfer to pc can only be done with the player the pc transferred to in the first place, now i wonder where that mz n1 portable is that i had, did loadsa discs with that before i got the 980, i have a feeling that it is with an old mate in luxembourg, drat !!
  9. nice expeimentation, the bummer is, that if sony added a usb system like on the 980 earlier then none of this would be needed, all good stuff all the same, no wonder 980's cost mega bucks, its all about that usb, dispite its much poorer internal build quality
  10. not that i know what you lot are on about,i will just add that the 470 has pc link, dont know about keyboard function though, just my 2p worth to confuse matters even further !
  11. you have a lot more portables than i have, i have a mz r909, bought in the boomtime, around 2007, mint came with all its kit and 5 xsiv discs, 4 unused £20 all in, and a mz-n1 also with all its kit same price area, its at a friends house, has been for a long time, you know the score, will never see it again !!!
  12. only have one pat tested the jb980, september 2007, if there are others i cant remember off hand
  13. tip of the iceberg kevin, even i dont have any pro rack mounted jobs. though i probably will be ahead of you with jb series decks apologies for thread hi jack
  14. how many decks have you got kevin !!!!

just checked this one on iop read, its 50.1/49.1, so appears decent too. who would like to risk it for a biscuit on this one on the bay just now, it has c13. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sony-Minidisc-Player-Recorder-MDS-JE480/114752586294?hash=item1ab7c98236:g:z70AAOSwM-VgaZTK
  16. so there you go "money no object", es decks will become exotic items for the rich and famous a bit like posh cassette and dat decks, and yes i agree that the 980 adds bells and whistles that the previous 3 dont have,i bought it in around 2007, it was around £100 with remote, it was the going rate at the time, i wanted it for net md which is as we all know, can be a pain, its still handy for naming tracks via pc easily,i dont bother with mdlp anymore although ive got quite a few discs recorded that way via net md from that 2007 time, over the last year i have bought 3 930's spares or repair, its well documented on here the history of those, and one of them was an absolute steal !!
  17. i will never own a es deck, so i will leave those out of the equasion, so for this i will mention the qs decks mostly, the 980 for years i would have called it king, its all about that usb socket isent it, ive had one for about 15 years and only recently looked inside it and there is no comparison to say the 930 in build quality, inside its like a 480 in drag, the cost cutting is there for all to see, gone are the toroidal psu and quality board plus components etc, instead is a rather small board and standard iron core psu, so that dosent justify the crazy prices they fetch, so the previous 3 are where its at, each one is exellent in build only some bells and whistles added to some and not others and vise versa to differenciate them, so for me the 930 is the new king but i am biased as it was one of those i bought new 20 odd years ago that introduced me to minidisc in the first place, but be quick as prices are going up on those big style, well maybe not the 920 just yet, its still a little bit of a sleeper, its only a matter of time, the lesser models 470's 480's etc are going up too, a working 480 last summer was around 60 quid, now they are asking over a ton for them, and a guy asking a ton for drives for 980's,wonder where he got those from !!!

jig has now been employed on the 480, set up and operation has been well documented on this site previously, so no need to go onto that this time, unlike the 5 drives i find that its easier to lift drive out to an angle to get the ribbon into its slot and re install drve back with its mounting screws as ribbon is no problen to remove afterwoods, this chap reads on play 0.93mw $11 19.0 and record setting 7.25mw $8f 52.9 sticker says 52.4, iop read is 53.6 / 52.4, not a bad buy it seems !
  20. its unlikely but you never know, other responders to this thread are far more knoledgeable than me
  21. might be totally off beam here, diddent 12 volt vids have a problem with a md deck doing strange things, and he found that is was the super cap causing it as it was at the end of its life, just thinking outside the box so to speak.

in the meantime heres another pic of an area that can cause issues on the 480/470 models that i know of, behind the black earth wire there is 2 larger solder connections, they are for the ams, lack of ams function means that these can be dry/cracked and reflowing will be needed, the ams switch will need some cleaner also, there are sometimes hairline cracked tracks in this area, wire links will be the way to go if thats the case, ive had it on a 470 in the past, the only check ive done so far is just to check the hours play and record, which is 43hrs rec and 455 hrs play, so far not too bad as this ones ams functions correctly though a little stiff so some switch cleaner is all that is needed.

    MDS JE480

Afternoon all, the spares or repair 480 has arrived, stuck on standby and has a disc inside, oh goodie, a freebee, for the non edcucated in this procedure, the disc is very easy to remove on the mdm 7 varient drives and the deck wont switch on because it dosent know what to do, so to remove it you will see two white bits on the back of the drive, give the larger one a wee push, from the back towards front, its the one that puts the disc from play position to align it to eject position, only quarter to half an inch dont force it, when it stops,it stops, then push the narrow one just to the right the one with the teeth, until the disc comes all the way out, thats your feebee, of course the cause of this fault is very common, the belt is shot, there are a couple of ways discribed on this site on how to replace that, safe to say that if you do it from the top when it comes to the plastic latch that holds the top part in place, if you go too far and it breaks your totally screwed, so most people tend to go through the front. anyway here's a pic with disc in place, i'm off for my covid jab now, so hopefully later will go into testing it a bit with the 21'st century jig so kindly gifted by guyla.

    Three wise men !!

over to kevin, i think he likes the rack mounted varieties, uses a varient mdm 5 drive by all accounts, heres another creature, drive may be good, scrap the rest, would be the recipie for this one, would probably try and get it working properly first though. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sony-MDS-JE530-minidisc-recorder/284211766992?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649
