they're katakana not kanji

Does it have smart space and auto cut? On my PC1 deck, if there is silence for 30s or more, smartspace and auto cut kick in, reducing that 30s or more into 3s.

I agree with Andy (heh, that's me name to!), a home deck isn't usually used for recording live material, so they assume you are using a blank or partly recorded disc and do not want to record over it. However with a portable recorder which was intended to be used for live recordings, you would always be using a blank disc (you wouldn't be silly enough to start a recording with 10 minutes on a disc left, now would you? ) As for no tmark on decks, that's probably the same reason. When recording live, you would put rough marks between songs (as you can't tell exactly when the next song is going to start). With a home deck, it's either automatically done, or you are meant to get the track mark with precision. (on my PC1, 'divide' is in the menu, enter to select, scroll to select frames/minutes/seconds, adjust, press enter. Pretty complicated, but I like it better than 'guess, press tmark' on my R37 and every other portable.)

Here's a poll from the T-Station.. me = 16

You can't transfer faster than realtime without a NetMD unit, the PC link if it's an optical one is a USB soundcard with optical out.

DR7 launched tomorrow, Leland, you have to go and listen to it. Muahaha! I still say the MR250/230 are good, or the Sharp DR7, or if you want netMD, the N10.. Or if you're feeling rich, the Sony MDS-JE780 + Sharp DS8/Sony E710/E10, or Panasonic MJ95/55..

Need portable recording minidisc recommendations please!!!
me replied to Big Smooth's topic in The Loft
The N707 is at least double the thickness of my R37.. To me, that equals bulky. Fat. HUGE! The R37 has it's batteries in a logical place, on the side of the unit.. Trust me, i've used an N707, and prefer my R37 totally.. The N707 kept getting stuck in my pocket, and felt a bit cheaper than the R37, too.. The R37 is pocket shaped, the N707 is closer to being rock shaped. I'd prefer carrying a pocket shaped device in my pocket than a rock shaped device. I'd say it's the other way round even.. N707 owners mustn't have used the R50 for a day. My reasoning for them changing the shape of the unit is to make sure people aren't dissuaded by the front size of the unit, even though thinner is more important than length. Meh. my opinion.. -
all I see from Minidisc.org is that the JE480 has a 1 bit DAC rather than Hybrid Pulse from the 470. You're right. A feature here and there.

I doubt you would find any new R50s. They are 1997 models! But for a used one, there are plenty of R50s for sale, other than that, there are R30s. I see R50s go for about US$50->US$150 depending on accessories and snipers etc . Most of them only ship to the states though

Lol, keep posting! I think most people use it to transfer to the walkman, and couldn't care less what's on the computer (in fact are irked by the fact that deleting the .omg file deletes the .mp3, too. Can a rename foil that? ) Space might be cheap, but that's another NZ$200 for me i'd rather spend on headphones/blanks! (yeah yeah, i'm buying a 7200 RPM hdd as my 5400 likes to clatter around and break stuff for no reason.. ) Alls cool.

Without NetMD, you cannot record at high speed from your computer. You can still record from a soundcard or whatnot, but not at high speed. Do you need this? The MR250 transfers LP2 data at about 15x, excluding conversion time from MP3 to ATRAC3.. Remember, the MR230 doesn't have netmd, the MR250 does. They are essentially the same unit except the MR250 has NetMD. Don't fool yourself into thinking you'll just record using your friends recorder.. It'll bug you a lot! Just get the MR250/230 Leland, I think I figured out why a lot of people dislike NetMD. They don't want a whole lot of .omg files clogging up their HDDs! (perhaps they're like me and have a 700Mhz processor, 10 gig hard drive.. don't want to upgrade after buying expensive NetMD). Meh.
-
Oooh! The MR230 and MR250 both come with speakers.. They don't clip on to the unit, but apparently they aren't too bad for casual listening, like when you are about to sleep, put it on your dresser or something. Plus, the MR230 comes in RED. (my favourite colour.. ). Could you tell me where you intend to use the unit? Like.. Do you do PC based recordings?

if it's in katakana, KEISU means Case.

JE480 lacks NetMD, and probably a digital out, if it's anything like the JE440, 470..
-
Theres new decks MDS-JE780, 980, and 480. They've been out since around July, and sell them in New Zealand. I guess North America is out of luck. MD seems to have become more accepted in north america with NetMD.

Whatever!! It's just at the t-board, it seems theres a new thread everyday on people pissed off about the lack of NetMD uploading. I was saying 'this is what NetMD is, this is what it doesn't do' so he wouldn't come back here after buying a form of netmd, and say 'Hey it can't upload!! what the hell?!'. That assumption doesn't seem to happen with non-NetMD units. I don't use LP2 because I don't need it. No point. I said it probably isn't too bad, as I can't be the person in questions ears. I've used it on an R900, I can't really tell the difference, but I wouldn't use it anyway. Hence my latest addition is the MDS-PC1. Fine then, you can edit it.. A lot of the stuff I have needs trackmarking outside of the MD..
-
Try applying some clear nail polish to them screws, perhaps it'll poison those MD elves that keep thieving those screws. If it doesn't do that, at least it should prevent everyday usage of the unit from causing the screws to pop out.

By buying another unit. You cannot do anything with a player except play MDs. May I suggest you look at the Panasonic MR220? It's better in a few ways to the Sony R909 and Sharp MT770. If not the MR220, theres the newer MR250 with NetMD or the even newer MR230 without. If you want a Sony, then the N10 is good. Also, Sharp has a non-NetMD MD-DR7 coming out. NetMD allows you to record at high speed to your MD unit. max LP2 quality (which probably isn't too bad). It also means you can't edit the disc out of the NetMD program. :|. Can't upload at high speed either. Bit of a bummer for that. If you don't want NetMD, you can still record using an ordinary 3.5mm line cable, or a miniplug to miniplug optical cable (portable CD player to MD recorder) or a TOSlink to miniplug (Home CD deck or soundcard) to the portable MD. This is in real time. The MR230, DR7, and R910 aren't NetMD capable, the MR250 and N10 both are. If you want a cheaper option, please consider the Sharp MT180 or Sony N505. (both don't have a mic jack). Or, the Sharp MT190 or Sony N707.

D'oh! I was certain that only Sony killed their units like that. Meh. Their budget models seem better than any Sony at the moment, and i'm pretty much a sonyphile.
