  1. Avrin, are you highlighting the entire waveform in the edit window and clicking "scan" in the frequency analysis window for each file? I only ask because I believe this gives more accurate results...
  2. More relevant info in this post: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showt...st&p=125678
  3. See my post here: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?s=&am...st&p=125745 There is an option in SonicStage regarding how SP tracks are imported. The default is Atrac3+ 256kbps, but you can choose PCM. It is possible that either the taperssection poster was unaware of this setting, or if they imported both ways and failed to delete the 256kbps import (in which case SonicStage may well have used the 256kbps when saving as WAV). Personally, based on my own testing and frequency analysis, I don't believe that SP is converted to Atrac prior to uploading as PCM when the latter is chosen in SonicStage's preferences. -a
  4. I'm running a frequency analysis comparison of the same SP track imported twice (once as PCM, then as Hi-SP), I'll post the results shortly. Unfortunately I no longer have a deck with digital-out, so I can't compare that. However, if what is stated is true, there should be no difference between the SP track imported as PCM vs Hi-SP/ -- Frequency Analysis Results: SP Imported as PCM SP Imported as Hi-SP As we can see, there is a clear difference between the PCM upload and the Hi-SP upload. I can state based on this that in my opinion the PCM upload is not converted to Hi-SP prior to PCM. Regardless, whether anyone could hear this difference is subjective. Also I would like to see a comparison between these and optical-out as well. So if anyone has the means, please post! FYI, there is actually a setting in SonicStage that delegates whether the SP track is imported as PCM or Hi-SP... I suspect that whomever posted on Taperssection may have either not known about this setting (the default is Hi-SP), or imported the same track both ways without deleting the Hi-SP upload prior to converting to WAV, in which case SonicStage may have defaulted to the Hi-SP track and converted that one to WAV instead of the PCM upload.
  5. No models support WMA natively. You can however transfer the WMA tracks to MD via SonicStage, which transcodes the tracks to ATRAC while transferring. I'm not sure about protected WMA tracks though.
  6. If you are recording through Mic or Line/optical in - yes, the signal is heard through the headphones. All models have this functionality.
  7. I did a fair amount of testing when comparing LP2 to SP Compatibility mode, and found no such cutoff when importing Legacy SP as PCM. There may be a cutoff when importing SP as Hi-SP, but that makes sense since you are transcoding anyway.
  8. Here's a good one: http://www.tapeonline.com/label-templates/LA-50900-W.zip Some of the links are down, but check here as well: http://www.minidisc.org/part_hacking.html#Titling_Filing
  9. Are you using a laptop by chance?
  10. It's actually taken with a crappy old DV camera (the video DV part is broken anyway), so I use it occasionally for still photos and recording low-quality video to SD card. I actually had it on a fairly wide-angle setting, hence the distortion.
  11. That limitation was lifted with 3.4 i believe, and hasn't been an issue since. If you want to be extra careful you could always playback the disc using SonicStage and record the audio in realtime using Audacity or some other audio editing software prior to actually uploading..
  12. Unfortunately, not digitally or faster than realtime: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=7070 RH1 + TOC cloning = Uploaded NetMD-transferred content. Also his is MONO, so I don't think it came from the other PC via NetMD anyway. Still need the RH1 in order to be able to upload though. -- Analog should work fine, most of us have been doing it that way for years before the advent of Hi-MD. If you are adamant about a digital transfer perhaps someone here with the RH1 could upload the disc to CD for you as a trade or something.
  13. Eeek! I had no clue it would be quite that bad.
  14. I have a feeling that Hi-MD discs will outlive the recorders in the long run, so I wouldn't use them for archival purposes. As a somewhat temporary storage medium (before your unit breaks down) they are fantastic but slow, as stated.
  15. looks like the original post could use some cleanup with the tags...
  16. Any Hi-MD recorder will upload Hi-MD recordings to PC. You mentioned Linux, but SonicStage is a windows-only program. I've got SonicStage to work in Ubuntu using VMware Server. Hi-MD models with Mic-in: MZ-NH700 - MZ-NH810F - MZ-NH900 - MZ-NH1 MZ-RH910 - MZ-RH10 - MZ-M10 - MZ-M100 MZ-RH1/M200 You can use manual levels on the unit, but loud LOUD concerts will overload the mic-preamp and cause distortion... A battery box is one way around it, another method (cheaper) that sometimes works is using a small headphone attenuator. Here is a good post regarding avoiding distortion wilst recording live: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=15573
  17. What format was it recorded in? If it was recorded in SP/MONO/LP2/LP4 you can only upload it with the MZ-RH1.
  18. If you decide on the MiniDisc route: The R50 is an older unit so there will be no digital way to get the audio from the Minidisc to PC or whatnot. You'll need to do it in realtime via analog. Also, it's highest quality setting records compressed Atrac @ ~292kbps for 74 or 80min, depending on discs. The newer Hi-MD recorders will upload their recordings, digitally using SonicStage, and can record in PCM uncompressed 16bit 44.1kHz (CD Quality). You can probably pick up a used MZ-NH700 for around $125 or less if you keep an eye on eBay. There others that know more about mics than myself, so they will help out I'm sure... The Olympus voice recorder is designed for just that... voice. Chances are it will be quite poor at recording concerts.
  19. So I've had an older MZ-E900 for some time, I love to death even though it's a player-only unit. Really small and nice - no display, barely bigger than the disc itself... But here's the catch: When I use it with the supplied remote (RM-MC11EL) it has the System Beep. I can't get it to turn off and its almost always about 350% louder than anything I'm listening to. Quite frustrating. Doesn't beep without the remote.. but like I said theres no display on the unit itself. The option doesn't seem to be in the menus to turn it off. Anyone know enough about this unit's service mode to help me silence it? Or any other ideas?
  20. hmm, hehe .. I pulled out my RH10 to check the OLED (didn't notice any burning out oddly enough... had the unit since it first came out). Anyway I went into the edit screen and realized that the "missing letters" issue appears to have fixed itself somehow!!! but wait... Hehe, it was a standard MD recording. Seems as though the missing letters (yes they are in fact still missing) only apply to Hi-MD mode recordings. Anyway, how do you get into the display check in service mode? I didnt notice anything dim/burning out by just going into the menus..
  21. i noticed some similar "anomalies" before after TOC cloning with a disc that had multiple formats on it...
  22. Not sure exactly what you are asking, but the Atrac files are in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\SonicStage\Packages (and it's subfolders)
  23. Optical-input will certainly yield the better quality. SP "Compatibility Mode" is pretty much LP2 quality. Here are some tests I did a couple months ago on the subject: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=19276
