that's all that counts! as so many people have stated and restated/// let your own ears be your guide! if lower bitrates are transparent to you / sound okay, then you can put more music on an MD.
-
You'll need the RH1 to upload those legacy recordings. It will also work on a mac (in Hi-MD mode at least, you won't be able to upload those old discs to mac though.. only PC). No other units will upload the older formats unfortunately.
-
if you can get in contact with someone else here with that unit, you can check and compare the service mode settings. if someone accidentally messed with them previously that could cause similar things. alternately it could be a hardware issue that would most likely not be worth repairing.

the ~160mb is just a figure stating how much audio (atrac) "data" the old (not Hi-MD formatted) discs held. When you format one of these same discs as Hi-MD it increases that to ~300mb or so. You have to format as Hi-MD to use the disc as actual data storage anyway, so even if it says 160 it'll be closer to 300mb when you actually store anything on them.
-
You also may want to try a different USB port... Could be that or even the cable. But try to see if it actually works with any discs... do you have any with tracks on them already?

Sony DPA-300 MD-DATA Recorder, Medical Grade, NEW:$29.95

Welcome to the forums, The recordings can most likely be saved using "TOC Cloning" techniques. Be wary though, it sounds like your recording head may be going bad on the unit, and you may end up with other discs erased in this way... PM me if you want more info on TOC Cloning, I may be able to help you out.

Are you installing 4.3?

Need Help Recovering a Corrupted TOC
raintheory replied to kraig_nielsen's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
If you are using a NetMD or regular MD recorder, you can get the data recovered by "TOC Cloning". If you are using a Hi-MD recorder, you are out of luck for the time being. What unit are you using? Shoot me a PM if you want more info/help with TOC Cloning. -
There was talk of having the equipment browswer switched to Wiki so we could all contribute. Not sure why it hasn't been implemented yet,

Q: Any harm in leaving RH1 connected via USB?
raintheory replied to ethornley's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
The OLED would probably go bad quicker. -
Can't transfer files from SonicStage to Net MD anymore - why?
raintheory replied to LHB's topic in Software
Just for kicks, try a different USB port. If you use one that you haven't had it plugged into before, it will reinstall the driver and may start working properly again. -
The region can probably be changed from within service mode. I don't have this model so I can't help more than pointing that out. Please don't go poking around in service mode yet though, you can easily brick your unit/ Perhaps someone with a US model can compare service mode settings with yours?

That is what I meant by "on-the-fly". Here, a movie is worth a thousand words (a picture wouldn't be in this case ): RH10.wmv The video shows REC-Volume adjustment being performed while recording with the RH10. The RH910 very well may be different in this respect, but they are almost identical units so I would doubt it. EDIT: I you mean changing from auto record levels to manual record levels while recording then no... can't be done. But you should be able to change the actual levels while recording, assuming you've started with manual levels to begin with. SOrry if I've misunderstood you somewhere along the way.
-
Are you sure about this? What if you start the recording in REC-Pause, then unpause to start recording? Then does it work? I would swear I've done this on my RH10. EDIT: Just tested on my RH10 and it works fine. Started in REC-Pause, set manual levels, unpaused... could change levels whilst recording with ease. Unless there are more differences (besides the screen) between the RH910 and RH10, on-the-fly record levels should work using this method.

Welcome to the forums. The unit should turn itself off within a few seconds after pressing stop. If you have it plugged in, it will probably say "Charging --min left" after it stops. Make sure you don't have the hold switch on.

NH1 will allow legacy recording (SP/LP2/LP4) on the unit itself. RH910 will only record in Hi-MD modes on the unit itself. NH1 comes with a fantastic remote (RM-MC40ELK) that is great for live recording. The battery for the NH1 is better, but more expensive. Also, I don't think the NH1 has a AA Battery attachment like the RH910 does.

Here is a tutorial on modifying MD portables to have optical outputs: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=18416 Not sure how helpful that would be though. I believe the MZ-1 may be the only portable with optical out (might be one other of that era that does). Otherwise you may have to look into an MD Deck. There are a few of those that have optical out, just be sure it's MDLP if you need it.

This really is a great example of why it pays to research the product you are buying. Also a good example of why DRM is nonsense, especially on your own recordings.

I've been trying to figure this out... With Dapper, I was able to use my NetMD units (and Hi-MD units in NetMD mode), but it doesn't want to work for me with Feisty... I'll post back if I find anything out. BTW this is all using VMware in linux..

SP "Compatibility Mode" -vs- LP2 (Atrac3 132kbps)
raintheory replied to raintheory's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
Yes, the source file for all of the SonicStage conversions was the original WAV file. I also was sure to purge all traces of the file from SonicStage's folders between conversions to be sure the program wasn't transcoding from a file it already had. I used the MZ-RH1 to transfer from SonicStage. -
Yes welcome back! Did your newly acquired NH900 come with it's charging stand?

You can specify the location of "My Library". But you are better off following this thread in order to remove DRM from your uploads before moving them around: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=16088 If you have the files on a separate drive without removing DRM first, you run the risk of not being able to use the files if something happens to your SonicStage install, or if you try to use the files on another computer.

Per richyhu's request, here a comparison of True SP -vs- Atrac3+ @ 352kbps: Untouched WAV Atrac3+ @ 352kbps True SP (292kbps)
