  1. I agree, that's my OS of choice for virtualization.
  2. The only problem I could foresee when running a Server/Client setup would be getting external/removable devices on your client computer to register on the server computer. Last I checked when using VMware Server in this way (on dapper, I just had server installed on the system and ran it from the same pc) it wasn't compatible with USB devices attached to client consoles. I had gotten this initial VMware sever/SonicStage setup installed and working on Ubuntu Feisty around the time it was first released. However, I wasn't able to get any NetMD devices to be recognized by either Ubuntu or VMware. Hi-MD worked fine, but not NetMD, which worked previously on Dapper. I suspect some packages were moved/removed. Anyway, hopefully there will be continuing development of similar virtualization workarounds for running Windows only software somewhat-natively on linux (ex. WiNE). EDIT: It seems the original article I referenced in the initial post has been moved..
  3. Great!!! You should be able to reuse the 5hr blank disc you recorded with no problems. I made a set of discs (1 of each format) to use specifically for cloning. You've passed the initiation, welcome to the MiniDisc TOC Cloning Club! The MDToCCC! (I don't know, just made it up) ...currently only 2 active members I believe... ... us!!! EDIT: I guess I'll start working on a reasonably straightforward tutorial, seeing as it does work on your deck (and probably others not mentioned in the other link). Would be nice to have a dedicated (stickied possibly?) post to help people out.
  4. ... Yes, unfortunately I haven't been able to give it the use it deserves. It is truly a wonderful unit. Trust me, if our RH10 hadn't bit the dust I wouldn't be able to part ways with it. Alas, we are in need of a second Hi-MD that has a mic-in. I'd bet just about anything that if/when someone shows interest I will start needing a camera while I'm out and about.
  5. Wonderful question. I have no idea! ...I hope someone else does. If not, do let us know if and when you do update and test it out.
  6. Moved your step 3. to step 8. This should work: 1. Take a blank disc and Record (in the same format) "nothing" Lets call it Disc A 2. Let the deck write the TOC 3. After the TOC writes to this disc give it a name or date. Let the TOC re-write this info. 3. Go into TEST mode (don't press anything after this) 4. Eject this disc while in TEST mode 5. Insert the disc that was mistakenly erased. Lets call it Disc B 6. Pull the power cord to turn off the machine 7. Plug the machine back in 8. Give it a name or date. Let the TOC re-write this info. This will write the TOC from "Disc A" (which is stored in the unit's RAM) to your accidentally erased disc, "Disc B". All assuming your unit will go into test mode and allow you to eject your disc (without the unit acknowledging this) and all.
  7. After you record a blank disc for 5h, you want the unit to write the TOC, just make sure you aren't recording on your disc you want to save. So no tricky part there. Dirty the TOC just means make some edit (like naming the track) so the unit knows to re-write the TOC. This is done after you have successfully swapped discs without the unit knowing, which is the tricky part. Something with service mode, you'll have to figure that part out from that link. I just re-read the link and realized how confusing it all sounds, it's really all not that bad once you do it. The instructions in that link make the whole thing sound ridiculously complicated.
  8. I'd like to get an MZ-M100, or maybe MZ-M10. I'm willing to trade my MZ-DH10P. The unit is in great condition, and I'm hoping somebody would get more use out of it than I do. http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-DH10P.html I'm in need of a portable that has a Mic-Input, and is Mac-compatible (hence the MZ-M100/M10). I might go for other Hi-MD units as well, as long as they have Mic-In. I'll also consider a trade for possibly 2 good quality legacy recorders, provided they are MDLP and have Mic-inputs with mic sensitivity Hi/Low setting. I will consider this, although the main reason for the trade is for a Mac-compatible recorder that my wife can use, so no promises on the legacy portables. The MZ-DH10 comes with it's charging cradle and cables. I'm not sure if it came with a remote initially, but I'll also throw in a basic RM-MC60 remote. I'll post pics if requested. Thanks!
  9. That would me MiniSurgery I guess.. hehe, and no its not all that much, just getting around two switches. Don't worry though, if you mess up you won't lose any of the audio data (unless you start recording over it somehow), so you wouldn't ruin anything if the procedure doesn't work right for you. Here is a procedure for modern-ish Sony decks: http://www.minidisc.org/cloning_procedure.html If you can't get it to work, I'd be glad to do the cloning myself if you are comfortable mailing the disc(s).
  10. The basics behind TOC Cloning are fairly simple.. Legacy MiniDisc audio data is stored in such a way that when a track or disc is erased, the audio data remains on the disc until it is rewritten. Only the TOC has been altered and no longer references the files. TOC Cloning Procedure (Using a modified R700/G750 or other portable recorder): - Create a "source disc", which is a disc with 1 long track (entire length of disc) recorded in whatever format your lost recording is in. This will be your "Source TOC". DO NOT use your disc that you want to rescue to do this! - Insert your "source disc" into your TOC-Cloning recorder, and after the "source TOC" is read into memory, you eject the "source disc" without the unit knowing (tricky part). - Insert your "victim disc" (again, without unit knowing the disc has been swapped). - Make a small edit.. such as naming the track or adding a track mark, and then have the unit write the "source TOC" to the "victim disc" by pressing STOP. The resulting recovered disc will need to be trackmarked again, and works best if there hasn't been extensive deleting/moving tracks around on the disc. If you are using a deck for TOC-Cloning, the exact method for allowing the deck to write the TOC may vary (see vore's posts below). --- Modifying the MZ-R700/MZ-G750 to enable cloning: (Please note that although this has worked fine for me, I cannot guarantee this method. There is an inherent risk of breaking your unit any time you try a modification such as the one described here.) The R700/G750 contains two switches that need to be bypassed in order to eject/replace a disc whilst keeping the unit powered on and unaware that the eject/replace has taken place. The first of the two switches (as shown in the photos below) is located near the unit's eject machanism. When the eject mechanism is used, the switch is moved to the side and power is cut-off from the unit. Press the eject button in a few times with the unit open to see where the switch is/how it moves. This "eject mechanism" switch can be bypassed without taking the unit apart. Unfortunately I have not found a way to gracefully bypass this switch, so I have physically removed (broken) the switch with a pair of needle-nosed pliers. Please note this is the only non-reversible modification that will be done to the unit. The second switch is located inside the bottom half of the unit, between the headphone/remote jack and the Mic-In. To access this switch you will need a small phillips-head screwdriver. An eyeglass repair kit works perfectly. Remove the battery and the 4 screws (don't lose them!) from the bottom half of the unit (battery side). The hardest part of the procedure is removing the casing from the bottom half of the unit. See page 7 of the service manual for help, available in the downloads section (hint: you need to press the eject button in the whole way and remove that side first). With the bottom half of the casing removed, locate the small black switch between the headphone and mic jacks. There is a metal "foot" that holds this switch down when the unit is closed. In the following photo I have bypassed this switch using simply a small piece of cardstock paper wedged in on top of it, holding it down. Both switches are now bypassed, and your R700/G750 is now capable of TOC Cloning following the instructions above! For other portables, the second switch should be in the same place, you may need to find out how to bypass the eject switch though, as it is most likely different. Browse the Service Manuals in the downloads section for help. If you are hesitant and/or unable to perform TOC Cloning yourself, feel free to drop me a PM. --- More TOC Cloning info cane be found here: Sony Decks: http://www.minidisc.org/cloning_procedure.html Sharp MD-MS701: http://www-public.tu-bs.de:8080/~y0001729/...lone/index.html
  11. Thanks guys, I got it to work! I'll print out that excerpt from the manual. Figures all I really needed to do was "RTM" hehe. I really didn't even think the information would be in the manual in order like that. It doesn't help that my click wheel on the unit has always been funny at times... Also I had to set it to low mic sensitivity as well, so that manual excerpt really helped with that. Thanks!!
  12. No option in the remote for advanced menu... I think you have to start recording/set to manual mode on the unit itself, then you can go from there. Come on guys! Where are the RH10 users?! Or RH910, or M10/M100 for that matter? Really want to be able to record with this again, please help me out! All I need is a list of the steps, as if I were blind and trying to set the unit to manual record
  13. All 2nd and 3rd gen units. MZ-RH10 / RH910 / RH710 / DH10P / M10 / M100 / RH1 You still need to transfer the mp3's via SonicStage, and the 2nd gen units seem to have "dull" playback of mp3 compared to Atrac, the RH1 doesn't have this shortcoming.
  14. Nope, doesn't show on the remote... The other possibility is that the "menu" button on the unit is shot as well, but I'll be optimistic for the time being and wait to try getting to it if/when someone posts.
  15. What similar condition Hi-MD units would you be willing to trade for?
  16. All I get is: Edit MainPlayMode Option While accessing the menu via the remote. No Rec-Settings, even under option.
  17. (I wasn't sure where exactly to post this, so if it needs moved, have at it!) I mentioned in an earlier post that I had dropped my RH10 and the OLED is now dead.. I haven't been able to get the OLED working, but the unit still works fine. I do own the RM-MC40ELK remote, so if I can get into manual record via the unit, I can see/adjust the levels on the remote.. So, Can somebody please post the steps to get the unit into manual record? For example: - Hold menu, - Scroll down x number of clicks, press enter. - Scroll down x clicks - etc. etc. etc. The least number of steps, the better... So if you can scroll up instead of down in fewer clicks, that would be preferred. I know plenty of folks here have the RH10/RH910, and this would only take a few minutes of your time and really help me out. I'd like to print up a small sticky to put on back of the unit with the steps so I can use this recorder without the god-awful AGC default. Thanks in advance!
  18. (/me stares at his RH1... ) That really sucks, sorry to hear of your RH1's apparent demise... "breezed" seems like a very odd message, I wonder where that one came from... If it's still under warranty I would definitely suggest having SONY replace it, ASAP. Definitely not normal behavior for an RH1 (or any other unit) at this point in it's life.... Let us know how it goes.
  19. Ahh yes. And our MZ-1 still works to boot!
  20. FWIW, I wasn't saying I agree with any of the content of the "documentary" (hence the quotation marks), but I enjoy seeing things that try to get people to see things in a different way, which IMO is what the film was trying to convey. To not take the truth as it is told to you, find your own truths and don't believe everything you are told. Especially not from a "documentary" circulating on the internet. In other words, I like the intent.. while not necessarily agreeing with the content
  21. Zeitgeist: http://www.zeitgeistmovie.com/ an interesting "documentary".
  22. I have noticed myself that sometimes the search feature doesn't seem to work very well when I try to dig up old threads... Not sure why that would be though.
  23. I use DAEMON Tools myself, great program. Feel free to PM me if you need any help getting this working.
  24. eh? I've transferred quite a few VBR files... I'm almost positive...
