  1. haha, hopefully it takes longer to explode than the battery life is.
  2. Yeah, my PM box over there would haev totally filled up in less than 5 minutes. My stolen E3cs thread on head-fi got nearly 300 replies... and two mini flame-wars, one over whether or not it was my fault they got stolen and the other over whether or not it's the gas station's responsibility to replace them. Oh, and I got close to 80 PMs out of that too. Most offering condolences, some calling me an idiot, others "helping" out...
  3. Actually, you can only upload the same track once, which is very limited. It will fill out your recording needs, however.
  4. lol hey! I've only been repairing things that are broken (my amp T.T). Anyhow, my audio system is going to get a rest for a very long time; I've got other things I wanna spend money on. Such as this. rofl I posted this on the OT forum at head-fi and a mod deleted it in less than a minute after it was posted. Guess they're not mature enough to handle something like this.
  5. http://www2.victoriassecret.com/commerce/a...ame=OSBRPPTYZZZ Personally, I am totally in love with it and will order the moment my bank account gets un-messed up. Been a long while since I spent money on something actually "girly" and I think it's long overdue!
  6. Why spend money on another, less-featured portable recorder when for a little more he can get a very nice deck with full editing functions, keyboard titling, PC Link and integrates with his home audio system (if he has one)? Alternatively, you could sell the player and take what money you have plus the proceeds from the sale and put them toward a Hi-MD recorder, which may actually be a better idea. *dons flame suit* You could always just buy an iPod Mini...
  7. No. You can only charge the battery inside the unit itself. However, you can do what I did with my old DS8 before I got the gumstick charger; charge both batteries, when one drains, pull it out and use the new one, when not using the player, charge the empty. Always keep one charged and you'll never run out of juice on the go. I've found that I only need to charge my iPod Mini once ever two or three days, although I plug it in every night anyhow. Never know when I might be out and about somewhere or stuck waiting and want some tunes.
  8. Since you've already got a portable unit, I would suggest looking into an MD deck. They can be had off of eBay for very little money. Make sure you get the newest version of ATRAC available to you; use the equipment browser on the MDCP to find out which deck is right for you. Anything with ATRAC 4.5 or ATRAC Type-R or newer should do you. Now, MDLP capable decks will cost more and may be hard to find. But picking up a used MDS-PC1 or MDS-JE630 shouldn't be hard for under $180 US. If you're not going to go the Hi-MD route, I definitely suggest using a deck. I had the JE630 myself and it was a very nice and featured deck with loads of editing capabilities. This does mean you will be constrained to real-time recording, but this is an older technology. If you do not want to wait so long for your albums to go to your player, I would suggest selling the Sony MDP and getting either a Hi-MD unit (MZ-NH900, etc) or a harddisk based DAP, such as an iPod/Mini, Rio Karma/Carbon or one of the Creative offerings.
  9. *OT*ROFL rombusters, your avatar is from rejected! That is the funniest thing I've seen recently, hahahahaha! "my anus is bleeding!" *dies giggling* */OT*
  10. You do know that the life of the Micro is only about 12 hours right? On the other hand it is a good deal smaller than the 3G iPod. It seems to be a good unit throughout; not one of Creative's usual lemons. Although, I still consider the Mini and the Rio Carbon to be superior (and the Carbon has very good battery life at the expense of a slightly weaker headamp).
  11. And Hi-MD's current battery life isn't that much better than most of the harddisk based DAPs on the market, not counting iPod. Still, it's a removable media format. I used to see this as an advantage but it's really not for portable listening. Portable recording it is a godsend for--run out of space during a session, just pop in another disc. But who wants to carry even four or five discs around with them, much less the 20 or 40 it'd take to match the capacity of most DAPs marketed today. I like traveling light; most of the time, it's just my Mini, my E3cs and myself. Although I have been carrying the CMoy around quite a lot. It helps the E3cs out with their little rolled off highs issue, just a bit. Purses are nice. All you guys with a DAP/amp/can combo has to carry around a camera bag or something. Mine's significantly cuter.
  12. There are full directions on this mod on head-fi, just search for it. I'd give you a link but head-fi isn't working for me.
  13. You're probably transcoding 128kbps MP3 to ATRAC. Of course SP and LP4 will sound very similar if you do this. Try making two separate recordings directly from a CD, one in real-time SP mode and one in real-time LP4 mode. Don't use SonicStage. Then have a listen, and tell me what you think. Although, if your headphones are not good enough, you may not be able to tell much of a difference...
  14. Mac Mini = Home Theater PC. Designed to be small, very quiet, fit easily into the A/V cabinet of the living room and not look scary enough to frighten off the houseguests. It's not for gaming, Chris. If you even COULD game on a Mac anyhow. Screw Marathon; it's just a crappy System Shock ripoff. Rio Nitrus is a microdrive player though and it can suffer a head crash from the type of active use that a flash player would get. I do totally agree with you that the nitrus is like ten thousand times sexier than the stickpod. I'm shocked that apple made something ugly.
  15. It's stored on the disc in binary, though, which is digital. Lands and pits, just like a CD, right? I wasn't aware that a binary storage format like optical media could even be analog.
  16. Good canalphones don't start until you hit the low end of the Shure/Etymotic range, with the exception of the Sharp MD33 (~50USD shipped at Audiocubes or Bluetin) and apparently according to Nismo and Damage, well burned in EX71s. Not a canalphone but I'd suggest the KSC-35 or KSC-75. They're clip ons but oh my god, you would not believe how amazing I can make my KSC-75s sound. They really love amps, but are great without them too. They're my jogging cans for my iPod.
  17. Yup, in ear monitors, such as Shure IEMs, Sensaphonics, Ultimate Ears, etc. The Etymotics aren't really IEMs since they don't fit very securely in your ears and are not intended to be used while going through a series of wild gyrations. Shure has some pretty good monitor setups, wireless transmitters and receiver bundles with an IEM included, but they're kind of expensive. I use the Shure E3c (which is the consumer version of the Shure E3 stage monitor, there is no physical difference other than color between the two) and I lurv it.
  18. Thank you for that link! Soooo much lovely DIY audio parts! Mmm, nice RCA jacks... wonder if they carry opamps...
  19. MDR-D77 are incredibly difficult to find because there weren't very many of them made as far as I can tell. Actually the D66s are slightly bass-shy. The cotton mod (acoustic damping the interior of the "eggo" shell with cotton ticking) improves the bass at the price of detail and clarity. Seriously, if this is for portable, I urge you to try an IEM (canalphone). Some of them aren't very comfortable, but the portablity factor is very good and nothing isolates like an IEM. I use the Shure E3c myself and it is so comfortable I can sleep in it (using the ultra-soft sleeves). Sonically, the E3cs are my cup of tea except for the mildly rolled-off highs, which I can deal with in exchange for the detailed and clear sound, excellent portablity and COMFORT. The Etymotic ER-4P/S have a sound I really like more (especially amped) but they seriously do not like my oddly shaped ear canals! I wasn't too keen on the "it goes WAAAAY the hell in there" aspect of high-end IEMs when I got my first pair, but now that I've owned the E2, E3c and the ER-6i (which I didn't really like) and listened to besides the ER-4P/S, I definitely can say that I'll never use anything but IEMs with portable unless I need an open phone (in which case my KSC-75s come into play). Hmm... maybe I'll get Sensaphonics one day.
  20. For me, it is content that's fresh all the time and many different topics of content. Although, I think my attention is pretty much rooted to the DIY forum at head-fi as long as they aren't talking about Dynahis. -.-' Even if I could afford to build one *coughfivehundredusdollarscough* matching all those transistors... cutting angle aluminum... heatsinks, worrying about heat, insane DC offset issues... Meh. I'm a DIY noob. =P
  21. I used to spend a long time here back when I was an MD user. When I sold it all for something more flexible, I just didn't come back as much because I didn't think my ambivalence toward MD would really help the community. Nowadays, I just lurk in the phones forum and try to keep people from buying Koss the plug.
  22. I've listened to a maxed out Supermacro (with AD8620, impedance switches, xinfeed, everything) and I'll definitely say that it's better than my old PIMETA (OPA2227/227, 4x 470uF Pana FC on the rails, RCA 1% metal films unmatched, pana evj pot) and probably still slightly better (subjective) to my current amp (PIMETA with AD8620/8610, 4x Elna Cerafine 470uF audio grade rail caps, ALPS RK27 pot).
  23. If you've got the cash, get the supermini. It's compact, looks nice and sounds very good. If you have even more money... get the Supermacro. It's compact, looks very nice and sounds better than my PIMETA, especially with the AD8620 opamp.
  24. Not sure about that... the E5cs don't have better highs than the E3cs, and they're the high end dealies. Maybe I just need Sensaphonics.

    Shuttle Xpc

Onboard sound cards are terrible for audio quality. Better yet, look at this option. Guzzler from Head-Fi offers the PCB for a USB DAC, which could likely be constructed by any one of the builders at head-fi, including myself. It doesn't have an integral amp, but with this USB DAC, you will eliminate the noise of the soundcard's analog output stage from being inside the PC case. Instead of spending money on a micro-PC, which I consider wasteful anyway (IMO), get a builder to toss together you a USB DAC and a PIMETA. Your cans, and your ears, will thank you.
