this is one funny thread people, nice find on that error message fuz (and sorry to hear about the messed up library, some sacrefices have to be done in the name of science and all that). hmm, that talk about hidden areas and i got thinking that, as even windows cant get at part of the area and hi-md supposedly use standard usb protocol for when windows transfers files, there must be some chip in the md players themselfs that regulate what part of the disc that windows gains access to. did anyone spot any interesting deviations from when a song was copyed onto the disc to when a data file where? im still surprised at the lengths that sony and similar can go to obfuscate what thier stuff does so as to avoid people useing them in ways not liked...
-
and the reason for that is forced upgrades. they want to give people more and more reasons to upgrade to xp as in theory that means more money. hmm, time to call a friend with broadband...
-
what would be perfect was that any file, be it music or otherwise was accessable via the normal ms interface without a need for a special program. but that is just a pipedream...
-
sounds like the file table got scrambled. if it was a hd i would suggest a attack by scandisk or similar but with a minidisc i think its junk. all you can do is reformat in my view... but maybe someone have a interesting solution

what is that? a model jet engine or a vacume cleaner? what is it with corps and not giving a straight answer? sony is giving me that cyberpunk feeling...
-
i hope one dont need sonicstage to move the mp3s to the hi-md unit as that would overkill, just allow the user to drag it onto the fat file system and read it from there
-
thanks jadeclaw strange that they dont use the power output of the usb port to speed up the writeing...
-
hmm, 3000 rpm sound about the same speed as used on backup devices that i found info on over on the toms hardware page well i guess one can scratch that theory then...
-
hmm, i just did a small search on google for some info on magneto optical storage media and one of the slowpoints had something to do with the way information was earased, but by useing some special kind of media the speed could increase by 33%. allso, i have a feel that minidisc writespeed have a lot in comon with cd-r writespeeds. how fast does the thing rotate on write compared to on read?

personaly im considering hi-md for the fact that they can double as a removeable storage device similar to the old diskett. now if they a new series of hi-md players that can play mp3 native then im going to scoop one up for sure!
-
about ahreing music useing sony branded equipment: i currently have a sony cd burner and it does not seem to have hardwired ability to stop the user from burning copyright tagged audio cds (nero reminds of of it but does not stop me either). and i could allways fill up a hi-md with mp3s(rember the fat filesystem?), i just cant listen to them while on the move.
-
personaly thats one track to many if it not only trashes the one on the md but allso the one on the computers hd...
-
now thats freaking hilarius. so basicly if you upload a song to a disc and it fails it not only trash that track, it trashes the contect of the disc (requireing a format) and trash the file on the computer that your trying to upload? score one for the coders in sony, in their own goal... seriusly, i do wonder what made a bug like that slip under their noses...
-
thats the main thing. both the hd storage devices and the memsticks have a upper limit. on a minidisc one just swaps disc and keeps on writeing sure the player costs a bit but the media is relative cheap. and as long as long as its reliable i dont realy care that its slow.

funny that ss cant do that trick when it run into problem in memory behind the scene. just a small message that this may take a while and then go to town. lately i wonder what sony is thinking, they have a perfect product with the same marketability as the old tape cassette and they are killing it with drm and bad software support, all just to push atrac most likley im going to get the cheapest hi-md i can find and use it as a diskett replacement. the size vs a hd unit and the fact that it have theoreticaly infinite storage is perfect for that task. and its fully RW and external. realy a handy piece of kit i must say. but as a music player its failing

yes, most atx type board have a small amount of current going to select parts of the board. the reason for this is to allow for software shutdown and similar (on a atx board the power button on the front is a low-current switch hooked to the moterboard, not a high-current one hooked directly to the power supply). most like the power part of the usb ports are hooked directly to the main power path of the motherboard and can therefor get some juice of the psu even when the computer is "off". still we are only talking 12v at best. and the wattage i dont know.

one mans master design is another mans garbage... personaly i allways go for functionality over looks, looks most often will try to trick you when it comes to comsumer products...
-
taste is like you rear end, divided (to translate a local proverb). basicly what one person defines as art or extramly good design someone else defines as garbage. allso, cant a digital amp be bypassed or is it part of the decoder chip? it kinda dont make sense to have a line out port if its must come from the amp as then you can just use the headphone port...

This post has been removed by a moderator (unnecessary foul language [-1]). cute, realy cute...

the thing is that the minidisk media is a nice replacement for the good old cassette, but sony is killing it with their insane drm systems
-
sony is hamperd by them not only being a tech corp but allso a content corp, therefor they will never make it easy to copy both ways as that is the route to piracy (if you belive the RI&MP-AA's)...

then i follow your thinking on the image but you forgot to state that you want to write the rotated image to disk every time you do one 90 degree rotate. jepgs are only compressed when its written to disk, there is no reason to compress it while still in memory. and lossy compression was never realy supposed to be a intermediary storage as i can see it. it have allways been a end user storage format for when you just want to bring out and listen or look at it but never manipulate it. i would realy love for all kinds of lossy formats to be removed but dont kid yourself into thinking that we can afford the increase in storage space that this will lead to. not by a long shot... -
they dont like mp3s, they want to push atrac, just like apple want to push aac and microsoft wants to push wma and wmv. then there is the whole drm issue in that you can dump a mp3 onto the disk and then copy it back off at a diffrent computer unless they wrap it in some encryption shit using sonicstage...
