Ahhh, you hadn't done the hack already? Sorry, it's the first thing I do when I buy a new unit so I have an assumption that everyone does it first chance they get.
-
I'd love a DH10P and will snatch one up if I ever see one at a reduced price. But only if I'm sure it can be hacked to 5mW, otherwise it's all but useless as far as I'm concerned. I'd be amazed if it couldn't be hacked just as easily as other first and second generation units.

Sony NAS-CZ1 Network Audio System

Looks nice but I dread to think how much it cost... -
Where's the catch? They must be making money from it somehow. And don't you need permission to sell a cover version since someone else holds the rights to the song?
-
If it's still under warranty them take it back. If not then you could (A) continue to use it without a screen ( buy a new player or © get an LCD remote and use that with it so you have a screen.

I would suggest upgrading to the newest version of Sonicstage: 3.4. This might help with the freezing or crashing and will also allow transfers at 192 kbps my bitrate of choice for sound quality vs. space. Sonicstage does not make a duplicate of the original MP3 unless you want to transfer it as ATRAC to your RH910 - in this case it has to convert. If you go into the settings you can tell it whether or not you want it to keep this ATRAC file for future transfers or discard it to save hard-drive space.

Would these mics be good for recording both my own music and lectures/interviews?
-
To answer the question you originally posed: MD will sound better if you plan to use compressed music because the ATRAC bitrate can go up to 352 kbps while ATRAC CDs can only be burned at a maximum bitrate of 256 kbps. If it's not an ATRAC CD player then there will be next to no difference between a good CD player and MD. I would suggest MD as it's more flexible, managing discs is easier and any ATRAC bitrate from 192 upwards sound fantastic.

Why don't you want to use the RH910's equalizer? There's this, but it's only three-band. http://www.pjbox.co.uk/Koss-EQ50.htm

I have a couple of AA battery packs which each take 4 AA batteries. They can plug into the stand and charge my NH1. If I was at home I'd sell you the spare one but it's not possible now. Have a look around, I got mine from Maplin's (UK). The plug size is standard.
-
Raja, you have a DH710 as well? That's... 6 HiMD units if you include the second RH10 you're selling but not your black NH900 if you ever get it. Don't you think this is overkill?
-
For the longest ife use an RH10/RH910 with both batteries. Failing that there are the AA only models which include the RH710 from the 2nd generation. The RH10 is available in the UK from Discount Discs, probably the finest e-tailer I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with.

The solution is to use another program to rip the MP3s and then import them to Sonicstage. Audiograbber (freeware, google it) will not only give you options for the file name but will also yield better quality MP3s. Use Audiograbber with Lame for best results, see AG's instructions.
-
I'd like more bitrates, a high-quality ripping option and proper naming of artists on discs. That's my SB wish-list.

I'm going to guess your PSP is from Europe. Am I right?
-
It is one big file so can't be defragged through the Windows defragger. If you're often editing a disc and moving data around on it then you could initialize the disc and re-transfer all the music (both usinf Sonicstage). I suppose in theory it's possible a HiMD could become so fragmented as to ake performance suffer but it would take a lot of work to do it.

I have the same unit and the same problem. I've never been able to resolve the problem and was left with no option but to buy a new MD player. The newer ones can all be uncapped. The N710 is the most severely volume-capped European MD unit and I don't know of any way to un-cap it. Sorry, you've been Sony-ed.

That would have been in Dixons, yes? Their normal price for a HiMD disc is £6.99 so duty free is about £6.19. You can buy them in other shops for £5.50 or online for £4 if you know where to look so Dixons are hardly a bargain. As for greater availability, I wouldn't say so. It worries me that overall the price for the 1GB discs seems to be creeping up, which suggests that popularity is fading. Sony centres usually have HiMD units as do a few other places but in general they're hard to find unless you look online.

None of the previous versions of SS caused me any major problems concerning stability or responsiveness but now that I have 3.4 I've had to ctrl+alt+del several times because it just stops & does nothing. SS is also incredibly slow, especially when creating or editing playlists, I've never had this problem before. This could be caused by the fact that up to 10 days ago I didn't really have any MP3s/WMAs in my SS library and now I have loads but 3.3 didn't have the same problem when I was using it just 4 days ago.

A new LiIon battery needs a few charge/discharge cycles before reaching its full charge potnetial so try this. If it doesn't help then I'd say you have a battery that's simply too old and you should contact the seller and ask for a new one. Incidentally, quick mode does not consume any power if there's no disc in the unit so try that as an extra check.

I was going to get a DAB a while ago but stepped back from the idea when I heard about the quality. The average bitrate is 128 (I believe) but with more and more stations wanting in on the act and with the bandwidth staying the same the quality is only going to go downhill. Before long most DAB stations in the UK will be 96kbps MP2. What's the point in that? I'll stick with FM as I prefer a little hiss to horrible, grating artifacts.

Sounds like this website won't be too productive. No-one can guarantee the security of your data and at the end of the day it is YOUR data and the responsibility for its care lies with YOU. You have to take such steps as you can to ensure the survival of your data should some mishap occur. It's your loss if this happens, not Sony's - they can't be held responsible. I have my music library backed up to three separate copies, in three separate locations. If it was important info like interviews there would be still more copies.

I think SS is much more than decent and have always thought so since v2.0, although I'm sure there are many who will not agree. I do consider 3.3 to be a "watershed" version with greater bitrate support and, crucially, DRMless ATRAC allowed. SS 3.4 should be even better with extra HiMD bitrates and further relaxed DRM. Much more than decent IMHO.
-
I don't want to seem unsympathetic, I have a few NetMD recordings I'd like to transfer myself, but I wish NetMD owners would just accept that they are NEVER going to be allowed to transfer these recordings to a PC. With the DRM relaxations Sony have imposed on HiMD lately I find it hard to believe they wouldn't allow NetMD uploads if they were technically feasable. Somewhere in the technology there is something that doesn't allow this. Period. Every time there's a new SS release and NetMD uploads are (yet again) not allowed, the same discussion ensues and it's getting a tad boring. It's also a bit unfair on Sony who are now making their MD technology more accessable to it's users. You bought your NetMDs knowing they couldn't transfer to PC, didn't you? Now you want something extra that wasn't in the original deal. I see the annoyance but must this be discussed with every SS release?

The N910 is not HiMD so it will not be recognised by the computer unless Sonicstage is running. Any version of Sonicstage should work with the N910 but since it doesn't seem to be working I would suggest uninstalling Sonicstage and then reinstalling. Use either the newest version (3.3) or the one on the CD that came with the player (probably 1.5), either should work. I'm not sure if you need a transformer to operate UK electricals in the US? If so then you shouldn't have it plugged in at all. As A440 suggests, trying a different cable may help. Check that there's a disc in the player and that the protect tab is off.
