If you convert the mp3's over to a Atrac format you can then use the divide track function on the Atrac file. I do this for podcast I listen to. The only down side is its manual and not fine enough to get 1 min sections, still good enough for breaking long podcast up. Are you importing the mp3s in as a Atrac file, if so it does take time to convert it. If you just import a mp3 in, it is virtually instanteous. POE

Stupid question, sort of related to this, can the PSP be downloaded from Sonic Stage on a computer? Does Sonic Stage support the PSP?POE

Someone brought up the idea of a hack for letting HiMd recorders record in the 352 format off of its digital inputs. This was shot down by as few other members, but think about it for a second, the ability to record to this format is being done inside the recorder. It's been in there the whole time HiMd has been out, who really knows, there may be some where in the service menu to enable just this. Sort of like the features we who have hacked our Net Mds have enjoyed for a long time.It may just be lurking in there somewhere for some hacker to find it.(That was a hint).POE

Is there anyway for you to repost this download, everybody seems to be having so much trouble with 3.3, can we get it back?POE

Thanks anyways it was worth the try, thought maybe I was missing something.POE ahh... 4x 3:13 = ...ahhh...ahhhh Just kidding!

I downloaded Sonic Stage 3.2(w/o Sony Connect) from this site the otherday, the download was uneventfull. I did all the suggestions about turning off all other programs when I installed it, the install was uneventfull. No problems period. I got to play with it for hours last night, I loaded around 300 songs on it. I like it it's simple, it's easy, just what I really need. I do have a question I couldn't figure out, is there a way while transfering to change the space left indicator from SP to some other speed? I'm using LP4 it would be nice to see the space left in LP4. I know that I only need to times the SP space by 4 to get it, i prefer to see if there is a lazy mans way for it though. Thanks,POE.

streaml1ne now that I've thought about it 6 channel inputs are starting to vanish from low priced receiver models. So they are avaible on models now that may have true analogue pass thru. Although my recent replacement of aging Sony(in terms of WAF it was outdated with no s-video hookups which resulted in the use of a switch box)for a Panasonic ($135) that does have 6 channel hookup, I some how doubt it has true pass thru, the Sony didn't either. I guess one day I will be able to afford one though. Which bring me to my point HK and Denon are still fairlly pricey receivers, they do not represent most of the receivers out there though. I will concede that the number of receivers that have true analogue pass through is growing in terms of % of receivers with 6 channel inputs, but they represent a small precentage overall. If I remember the article I read this was described as a dirty little secret of SACD, have to admit I didn't know about it when I bought my Sony, I thought I was set. From the article I read I was under the impression that a large number of receivers do this. To me this doesn't matter though because even in these setups I can still hear a big difference and in the end thats what really matters.POE

In regards to the article this info regarding noise in the uper region of SACD has been known for awhile. I think I read about this about 2 years ago in Sound & Vision in articles by Ken Polmann I beleive, overall this is a no point in over 99% of our systems out there. Can it be heard? Yes, even on my low quality system(which doesn't have true analogue pass thru on the 6 channel ins). Does it matter? No, I like to think I'm a audiophile and it really doesn't bother me. I just enjoy the increased resolution on everthing else. In regards to Sony employing watermarks on SACD I think some readers misread this article. SACD is copy proof just from the way that it is made or recorded from what I understand. Back to what I said about this being a no point on most of the systems out there. The differences between DVD Audio and SACD are sort of leveled once they reach most peoples receivers, most receivers even on the 6 channel inputs force the signal through A/D converters then D/A converters before being sent to the Amps, so they down sampled to 44.1/16bit. My info regarding receivers is a few years behind, but at the time there were very few receivers with true analogue passthru, I doubt there is many more now either. In regards to the orignal subject though eaiser I don't think so. In regards to quality though is a subject of opinion. I own a handfull of 2channel PCM recordings mastered and remastered in DSD(they are still regular CD not a SACD)and in my opinion they sound much better than any HDCD or quasi 20bit(24?) cds I have ever personally heard. The quality of these recordings can be heard in my home system as well as my car system. I wish all cds were mastered in DSD.POE

Try the equipment browser on the main page of this site. There is a listing of MD head units.POE

No, I haven't even bought a HIMD unit yet. I thought they were a little over priced. Now the new units have a more reallistic pricing structure.POE

For anybody dubbing from a cassette and you run to this problem try a minidisc deck. I use to own a 330 I got rid of it because it did not have type-R, now I only own portables. Recentally I started to try to dub off some of my cassettes I ran into this annoying problem. I was confused at first because I never ran into this problem with my deck, then I remembered that it had a setting for the senstivity of the track marker. I never had a problem with extra tract marks.POE

Something just came to me while going through the equipment browser. I notice something familiar with the E606W the wireless remote control. It looks a awfull lot like the round devices in the mock up picture. Maybe wireless remotes, that would be cool.POE

Thanks, Aeriyn now I know that I can invest in some of the older units out there for playback such as the 700,800 models. POE

As I understand it Type R is a recording technology so heres my question, Do you get the advantage of Type R recording when played back on a older generation Atrac? Do you get this on say a Sharp unit? If you do wouldn't the best would be to record in Sony Type R and play back on Sharp Auvi system?POE
-
The cosmetics reminds me of just about all other mp3 players out there ,YUK! Did anybody happen to notice that there isn't a single remote shown in this picture. This scares me alot I think Sony may just ditch remotes for these units, that would be a major set back to me.Hopefully they will still have a jack for them though.POE

Skradgee when using Sonic Stage to record fake SP it is upconverted lp2(Atrac 3),not 256 HISP(Atrac 3+). There is quite a difference in quallity compared to old SP.POE

dvallaere I believe some car audio manufactures used Net Md and MDLP interchangeablly. The car stereos are in fact just MDLP units.POE

Thanks guys and lady for your info on this. I was wondering about this and you gave me a great idea about Guns And Roses Appetite For Destruction cd which is recorded really low I think it might benefit from bumping it up alittle, Thanks,POE

I know that you live recorders out there always recommend that you use manual control for your record levels. So my question is there a real advantage to manual record levels when you dub a cd to minidisc with a digital signal?POE

Aeriyn I am a little confused by your post, you quote from my previous post where I say "what it was meant for, minidisc!". Yet further down you say that I neglect to notice that atrac codecs are only used on minidisc. I think my statement does say I notice this. Sorry for the confussion if I didn't make this clear. I also didn't say it sounded better than anything else. My whole point was that atrac probably sounds best through what it was meant to be played back through, minidisc. As far as the the graph of the test for the various codecs I don't deny it, I just think that Atrac fairs much better on the device it was meant for in the first place. All the test really says is that Atrac is a inferior codec when played against the other codecs on a device it wasn't meant for. I think even you said that the artifacts from Atrac (I assume while it is played on a minidisc) is more acceptable to people. I just refuse to beleive that a company that has brought us technoligies like dolby S for cassettes and type R for minidisc would not try to get the best sound out of Atrac 3/+ when they know it is being played back on one type of device. Of course not at the expense of download speed even I concede that this is probably a higher need than sound quality for Sony. Doesn't some of Sony personal cd players play back atrac 3.

Skyther do you know the difference between conjecture and fact. In my message I said " I believe"=conjecture. You talk of people talking out their butt ( I refuse to use the language you use), I say pot calling the kettle black. Now for some more conjecture(just for you skyther), I bring up cd's and them being optiumized. Most cds recorded today use a very high record level to the point that you can here some clipping(can't remember the exact term for when you use to high of a record level, sorry skyther) on good stereo systems. Do you think they sell cd's to sound good on systems very few people own or for the boom boxes and cheap home theaters. I think the latter, the companies don't want to sell a product that sounds really bad on most of their customers choice of listening gear. Most likely they(the recording studios) tweak the stuff to sound good on most systems, tweak=record levels and equalization. So why would Sony not tweak a codec that was meant for a specific device of their own (I bet I know why, so that it sounds good to the customers). This of course is all conjecture based on my limited knowledge of sound engineering and more of my large knowledge base of customers and selling stuff to them being that I'm retail managment for 14 years. Sony may not listen to minidisc owners very much about suggestions to improve their products. They do pay attention to lost profits do to inferrior product and lost customer appreciation. So yes I beleive they tweak their codec so that it plays back best on the product that it was meant for, minidisc!POE

Wundoo had the idea about the device the codec was designed for having a influence on the quality of the playback, I have to agree. It was brought up that the amp was the only influence in this case I believe this may not be true. Take for example type R encoding I believe if you had a sound engineer look it over they would find some built in equalization in the codec that influences the sound, otherwise it was equalized for playback on minidisc(in the high frequency region for type R). Please don't make the stupid comment about having a true flat signal , just about eveything you listen to has most likely been equalized at one point or another. I woudn't doubt to find out that Apple's codec has been equalized for optimum playback on a ipod, also. All the this blind test proved was that the raw codecs playback the same way that Atrac did bad on a device it was really not optimized for,on the other hand a lot of those codecs are broad useage and are probably best played back on a computer. That's my 2cents though.POE

My listening habits are about 50/50,background and serious listening. I have ask many of people if they just sit down and listen to music doing nothing else, not many do though. I make it a must to do when I have time to. So like aeriyn and dex the lower bit rates drive me crazy. I just got my 510 and 610 about 10 months ago and was amazed at how much difference the type R made. Aeriyn I also own dolby S cassette deck, when recording on to it from a cd to a metal cassette I have trick many of people into thinking they were listening to a cd at the moment. I think minidisc recorded with type R is just a little better in high's than dolby S cassette though. I use lp2 once in a while for old music that I don't listen to very often, but I really don't like on my home or car stereo to much, it's just acceptable! For headphones it's really not that bad. I remember reading somewhere that lp2 is seperate stereo, not joint like lp4 and the himd modes are. With lp4 I think this joint stereo is what really gives it away on home and car stereos. What do you think?
