  1. listening to the DVD of a Hans Teeuwen show called Trui (the guy is a very good but very rude and kinda crazy Dutch cabaretier/comedian) laughing till I drop, but that's ok... I'm already laying down
  2. ah... the 'converting to get rid of DRM'-trick naturally only works for tracks Sony has finally realized do not need copy protection (like your own recordings or rips of your own CD's) but whn it comes to online bought tracks they still think crippling them with DRM is the only solution to prevent us all from robbing record companies etc. (as if) in short, DRM was invented to prevent just what you are trying to do it is there so you cannot share or backup that track without Sony knowing and approving... as a matter of fact, you didn't buy the track, you simply bought the permission from Sony to use that track as they see fit... and removing DRM isn't approved bottom line? do not buy from online stores like iTunes, Connect etc. I wouldn't really recommend shopping from semi-illegal (legal in Russia ) stores like allofMP3.com (though I can understand ppl who do) or to go P2P (too much crap going round to be worth it IMHO) but just see what interesting stuff is in your friends' collection for starters and buy (ON CD!! at least demand a booklet when the big companies take your money or better, support local/indy bands) what you wish to keep
  3. huh... why? if you take 2 HiMD recorders and USB between them (which is impossible BTW) you could transfer the tracks from HiMD to HiMD faster then realtime ok, but if you'd eject the disc and put in the other machine, you'd have transfered all tracks at even higher speed but more importantly, the above wouldn't avoid realtime recording to get the tracks onto the HiMD disc first, unless you'd wanna use a computer... or am I missing something obvious PS: just for clarity... - if you were talking about transfering your old discs to new ones, all Sony HiMD players will play NetMD/MDLP discs as well, so I guess the Onkyo decks will as well (correct if wrong you Onkyo owners out there) - only the RH1 allows NetMD/MDLP discs to be uploaded to PC PPS: reread the title and I see you're talking about copying so I guess the idea was to 'only do the realtime thing ONCE' and afterwards copy it faster than realtime to different discs... that would require a PC, which would make the first realtime unnecessary I guess... so in short: as far as I know there is no such possibility, as uploading/downloading require Sony software (= more than just a USB connection) and analog (as no HiMD has an optical out for HiMD playback yet IIRC) realtime copying would be your only choice if you want to steer clear of a computer
  4. 42,000+ ... I would have thought this would increase at a slower rate now that atraclife exists for non-MD atrac gear... but apparently I was wrong still we only have a limited communiy of regular posters... and I dunno if that's a bad thing, as most ppl sticking around here are good ppl to hang out with
  5. sony MDR-D66SL eggos... yay now to wait till they arrive (and to see what those thugs at customs will charge me extra )
  6. ah, the beauty of egg-like shapes... you horrible ppl, look what you've done now... I just ordered the MDR-D66SL from audiocubes well, I can hardly wait till I get to try them (will be in about 5-10 days depending on customs trouble) now I've got myself an open/summer pair of phones --> Sennheiser px100, a closed/winter pair (and Belgium has long winters ) --> Sony MDR-D66SL eggos, an in-flight isolating pair --> panasonic RP-JE50 and even some stock-bud replacements for rough circumstances --> Senn MX350/450 and then there are the quite decently sounding Senn HD497's but as they hurt my ears like hell after about ten minutes so I'm thinking of donating them or something glad I'm not really audiophile (yet) as I'm getting slowly hooked on phones I guess
  7. Olga... have a look around these forums... lots of ppl have got the RH1 and the new version of SS (which is 4.0 and doesn't ship with the RH1 which still comes with 3.4) and have written lots of posts about them. I urged MTVictor to post a review/pictorial as you just can't have enough of those really but there are a lot already (one pictorial by my as well ) the RH1 is already available in Belgium (Brussels) so you should be able to get one if you want the newest version of SS (4.0 at this moment) is available for downloads in the MDCF-downloads section by the way
  8. also some non-standards compliant ID3 tags can cause this...retag with a standards compliant program (like iEatBrainz or something)
  9. tip: just use the computer to title tracks/groups etc. much easier!
  10. is it a bird? is it a plane? no it's superfast modding! thanks for the edit, Rich! (unfortunately I already voted ... and I chose PCM for MP3 out of protest for the lack of 'as is' option )
  11. haha blueraja... glad you pointed out yourself that the analogy isn't really one... cause it really isn't one still what I was trying to say before... indeed, as there haven't been any mentions of 'bad LIP-4WM batteries' yet, you are just paying extra for some 'peace of mind' when ordering the certified real Sony battery: - there isn't anything to say the Chinese are really fakes or - if they are indeed fakes - that they are of lesser quality...except that the big price difference leds us conditioned peeps to believe so... thus if you can live with the agonizing ( ) insecurity, just go ahead and save yourself some money - on the other hand, just because they haven't exploded YET ( ) is absolutely no guarantee that they are original Sony batteries or more importantly that they will never explode... which means that if you want security that your battery won't explode (well, that it won't explode because it is fake... wrong usage might make Sony batteries do funny things as well ) you should be prepared to pay a lot more bottom line: unless we have a real authenticity expert here who will examine the stuff for us or one of the Chinese salespersons reads this forum and suddenly feels like confessing there really is no way for us to know whether they are real or not. You should just ask yourself whether you think the money saved is worth the guinee-pig status you are adopting as we still only know little about the durability of the batteries (cf. no explosions YET ) or not... I personally will probably go the Chinese route at some time... but as for now, I haven't really felt the need for an extra battery (perhaps I will soon, at the festival I'm going to...but it is already too late to get one before that date anyway, so I will wait a bit more)
  12. until I got my RH1 I used HiSP (256kbps) for ripping CD's to HiMD. Now that I have got my RH1 and the HiMD music transfer software for mac, I'm ripping my CD's to my 12" powerbook with Lame 3.97 (beta 2, Jan 20 2006) @ -V4 --vbr-new and I transfer them as MP3's to my RH1 this gives me lots of room, good transparant quality and it is easily done with my mac. Only drawback is the lack of gapless... so still a few albums and most of my own live recordings are put onto discs in HiSP (256kbps) with the use of my PC (mostly SB for CD's and SS only for my own live recordings) PS: I use my HiMD's for listening on the move mostly as well, but I do hear the difference in SQ... LP2 is ok for noisier circumstances but not really for close listening, lower bitrates are unbareable (I don't mind listening to music at non-100% SQ on the move... but it still has to sound like music ) and 352 is overkill space/SQ-ratio wise... so HiSP is the best option. But MP3 -V4 --vbr-new simply gives about the SQ of HiSP at the space of LP2 PPS: perhaps an edit of this poll is necessary: remove the non-HiMD bitrates and allow an MP3 'as is' option
  13. ok, but please try the test I described above: - make a new recording of something in HiSP (not the old one, I know these were fresh recordings of yourself, but we need a new recording just to exclude some possibilities) - try to upload this - if this works, then something happened with the old disc (perhaps by trying to upload it with version 1 or something) but at least you know you'll be able to upload HiSP in the future - if it doesn't work, try making and uploading a new recording in HiLP - if this doesn't work, try downloading an MP3 from mac -> HiMD - if this doesn't work either, it looks like version 2.0 didn't really instal correctly or something as the program still behaves like version 1.0 - if the HiLP uploads and/or MP3 downloads do work but just HiSP is useless... then I'm really stumped, sorry
  14. indeed, since Sony dropped check-in/check-out anti-copy protection, deleting is the way to go... no more need to check-in glad it worked out in the end... see you around
  15. just to exclude some options... you could record a short track of yourself or something in HiSP and try to upload that (if that new recoding works, it has something to do specifically with the old recordings) perhaps some other ppl will chip in soon as well
  16. well if you want to be sure you won't need the backup tool, just follow the directions in this thread to strip atrac files from DRM using the file conversion tool (MP3's shouldn't have any Sony DRM) and just simply backup by copying all the music files to a backup volume after that you should be able to reinstall and use your existing library without any problems etc...
  17. @ donato, can you upload PCM and/or HiLP tracks? were the HiSP tracks recorded with a mac-compatible machine (an M10, M100 or the RH1) or with another HiMD? Are the tracks fresh recordings or are they downloads through SonicStage or SimpleBurner?... please give as much info as possible so it is possible for us to help...
  18. try reading this... it is on the RH1 versus the M100, but that is only an RH10 with added mac-compatibility so if you drop all mac-compatibility from the M100 side, you'l have an RH1 >< RH10 comparison
  19. as there are no copyright restricted track ... the SS-backup tool is useless! you should just copy the library to a backup volume and presto... the SS-backup tool is a relic from days where Sony was so paranoid about copyright that they would have wanted to saw their name in all their artists' underwear... and now it is only necessary if you have purchased songs from connect store or you still have a SS-library steming from ripping with older copyright protecting SS-versions still it is strange as you say you have already used the tool before with the same library have you 'removed' the copyright from the tracks by 'recoding' them to the same bitrate but with the unchecked 'add copyright' box?
  20. ok, but what does it do when you press ok/yes? is there a real error? cause this is just a warning message that you can safely ignore (in the worst case it'll upload the track to your PC again, which takes a bit of time) and what do you exactly mean by 'check-in'? in SS you have a couple of arrows (one left one right) and pressing the one left it will try to upload that track but that is not necessary to make room. If you want to make rooma and you've still got the tracks you're about to remove somewhere else, just erase them (select and delete in SS or edit delete track on the MD itself without PC-connection) as I said before... since some time Sony has dropped most copy-protection extras like the transfer count which required check-in/check-out so just erase without worries...
  21. Sony has dropped a lot of the anti-piracy stuff so checking-in (i.e. removing it from a disc so the transfer counter gains one, which was used for limiting the number of times a track could be downloaded in the early days of NetMD) a track isn't necessary anymore. If this isn't what you are trying to do, please give more details (what MD are you using, is the track still present on PC, what format is the track in,...?) the message about uploading is a strange one in SS4.0... I get it when uploading my own recordings (which is evident) but also when I try to delete a track or try to format a disc. It seems that SS4.0 just wants to make sure you do not delete anything you might regret later and uploads it to PC before actually erasing anything
  22. if you are not really sure where the noise came from, just check these possible sources: - did you record with the ac-cord attached? this can create a serious buzz due to bad earthing -> solution: record with (fully charged) batteries instead - is the mic plugged into the MD directly? (without any cable between mics and machine) as the MD has to physically spin a disc, motor noise can be picked up by the mic. This could also be the case even when the mic has a longer cable if you place mic and MD on the same (sound-conducting) surface (like a wooden coffee table). -> solution: use an extension cord with your mic and/or put the mic/MD on different surfaces (and if not possible, place the mic or MD on something isolating like a neoprene pouch, which dampens the motor noise) - stuff that has a stronger elektro-magnetic field could cause interference (like large speakers or TV screens nearby etc) -> solution: avoid noise reduction is useful to save a recording when it can't be understood otherwise... but unless applied VERY carefully it will not improve the sound quality of a recording IMHO. It causes unrealistic sound as it eliminates things that are meant to be there as well as the noise...
  23. eh, I do not mean to flame you basho, but what you describe here is exactly what Sony claimed the program would do for the MZ-M100 (and your post might give ppl false hope again)... Sony actually did 'claim' that the MZ-M100 (one of the mac-compatible models) would be able to upload recordings with the mac transfer program. That actually was the whole idea of the M-models, that they could do this. It was/is their only difference with the RH10 and RH910 respectively. What's new is that version 2 allows the M-models to upload HiSP and HiLP as well, while with version 1 this was limited to PCM only. But even here this isn't an 'unexpected and unpromised' bonus, again Sony did claim with the release of the version 2 software that one would be able to upload all HiMD-recordings made with mac-compatible models (which includes the M-models and the RH1). on the other hand, Sony did say that version 2 would allow MP3-downloading from mac to any HiMD that natively is able to play MP3... again this includes the M-models (and the RH1 and the whole 2nd gen) so while I am very glad you enjoy the extra functions, please realize that they were 'claimed' by Sony so it is not necessary to give ppl hope that their machine will be able to do more stuff with the mac software even though Sony says it won't... don't get me wrong...if you do not believe Sony or what has been said (often) in this thread (by ppl who have tested it), please try for yourself... but don't come complaining that it doesn't work ... we know - well, for me personally the biggest difference between the RH1 and the M-models (and between the RH1 and all existing HiMD in general) is the fact that it remembers manual recording settings, which makes stealth recording so much easier. - second most important is the ability to upload legacy discs (to PC) - further more its MP3 playback isn't crippled in any way (unlike all 2nd gen models including the M-models IIRC) - it has the HD-digital amp (unlike M100 which has a digital amp) which offers a different and according to my personal preference better (clearer and more realistic) sound - it charges fully through USB (unlike the 2nd gen and M-models) - it has a fully metal body (M100 has metal as well, but it is hidden underneath a softish plastic coat) but... the M100: - has a bigger screen - uses a gumstick battery + AA add-on - comes with a scrollwheel/roller for easy navigation on the recorder - doesn't require a remote for some (playback) functions/displays all in all these are two very different machines that both offer mac-compatibility.
  24. Victor, if you have the chance to take some pics and/or are planning to write a decent review... be sure to start a thread for this in the product reviews/pictorials section of the board as it would get 'lost' here in this long thread soon
  25. as far as ppl have had experiences with them overhere... they seem to be. but the bottom line is: - if you prefer saving money over security, go Chinese - if you prefer security over saving money, go Sony but whatever you do, it is your choice! (I'm currently trying to make this choice myself as well)
