  1. NH1 has the timestamp feature (stamps the date/time of the recording onto the disc), NH700 doesn't (no date/time data present, even if you do upload with NH1) so it is quite logic that it won't act the same uploading with the NH700 should add the time/date of uploading to the track if it isn't titled
  2. as you said already no one knows as it isn't out yet, but that doesn't make it a 'million dollar' question but rather a pretty 'impossible to answer' question to make a guess anyway: no, no version of the mac (uploading) software has been designed to work with models that were not intended for mac-compatibility, only the RH1 was intended for two-way mac-compatibility so I wouldn't even bet any money on the two-way function of the other mac-compatible models (MZ1O & MZ100) as they were desiged for one way only (MD->mac) the other models, I would really be surprised if they would work with mac
  3. numerous...like the very beautiful TDK's but HiMD-discs (1gb) only from Sony
  4. strange, with pressed CD's I haven't had any problems (they do press a protective layer on top of the reflective layer I believe) but what you describe has happened to CDr's quite a couple of times (and even within shorter periods) so we're actually saying the same thing... only your experiences make CD's even less trustworthy
  5. granted, I did miss that one, but then again... the DH10P really IS an exception in all ways
  6. indeed raintheory... that option for display is unavailable with the RM-MC40ELK and the RH1, just as it is for the RM-MC40ELK and all 2nd gen HiMD so no 'real' difference there
  7. thanks for clearing that up Paul... loved the paper! nice to see someone taking the the format serious enough to write a scientific paper on
  8. it is the same HD digital amp than my NH900 I believe, so little difference there, but I haven't really listened extentively side by side I did however compare NH900 and RH10 SQ extensively (my NH900 vs my collegue/friend's RH10) and I must say that I really think the NH900/RH1 is crisper/sharper and reproduces music exactly as it is... while the RH10 feels a bit armer but less 'precise' (hard to explain) my taste in music (and SQ) is definitely towards the NH900/RH1, but I guess ppl who prefer their music bassy could also prefer the warmth (more colored) sound of the RH10's amp... bottom line, they sound different and you could easily choose between them according to your personal taste (and I would advise anyone to do so) without saying one is better than the other... but (for me personally at least ) the HD digital amp really IS better compared to other stuff (JVC MD, iPod video, zen micro, ...) there really is no comparison IMHO... the RH1 comes close to HiFi (well as close as any portable could) while the rest comes close to music the RH1 has the same six band (7steps) eq as the 1st and 2nd gen HiMD, which means it is essentially useless for 'positive adjusting' as you'll lose bass (the lowest band is 100HZ) but 'negative adjusting' (lowering selected or bands) will let you shape the sound as well and will keep and/or even augment the bass. This trick (thanks greenmachine) works just as good for the RH1 as for the other gen HiMDs there are two eq-settings for your own to experiment with and a bunch of presets (and of course the surround stuff 1st gen had as well, which sounds warm and muddy and I do not really like ... ) and the normaliser which makes all tracks sound equally loud (haven't experimented with this enough to comment on it)
  9. for someone who believes quality playback equals bass, bass, even more bass, a whole bloody lot of bass added to a whole crapload of bass, with a little bit of bass on top you're quite fast to be calling Sony idiots ... I'm not saying they are not sometimes... but I guess we all are sometimes (and some a bit more often than others ) I do have the RH1 and believe me, if you like music (also the bits besides the bass) it bring very high quality playback for a portable (compared to lots of stuff, evidently also the puddle etc)
  10. yes to all... but for the MP3 files to be playable by the machine, it needs to go through SonicStage (no conversion needed though)
  11. the info comes from Sony, which doesn't make it more trustworthy though and there is no date set
  12. wow... anyone else 'enjoying' the rugby?
  13. that's true, but as greenmachine has proven (and has been said and shown to ChrisG many times before), lowering all bands one or two notches in the eq does 'raise' (relatively speaking, by lowering all other frequencies) the deep bass while still reaching more than adequate volume levels for relatively efficient headphones (like the Panasonic RP-JE50, Senn PX100, MX350, MX450,...). Besides, do not get me wrong, I've never said the RH1 would reach megabass-levels of bass (read my previous post again and you'll see) but it does reach adequate (and with greenmachine's trick even pretty deep) levels that should be enough to please almost everyone (except the most hard to please bass-heads) but... my main point is that all of this has been said many times before and almost always in reply of Mr. G's everlasting quest for Megabass which seems to pop up no matter whether it fits the thread or not... at this point there really is only one answer left: "no HiMD comes with Megabass. You are right! now get over it, please"
  14. chris... I'm sorry, but you HAVE asked that question before... lots of times... it has been answered already as well lots of times: the RH1's sound is better overall including adequate, realistic and will-please-anyone-except-pureblood-bass-heads bass... but no, it does not pack 'Megabass' (which seems to be the only thing you are after) this question has had its run...it's getting slightly annoying now please don't clutter threads with real questions with it anymore...thanks
  15. Sony offers no 'real' mac-support at all except for MZ10, MZ100 and RH1 -> uploading only (HiMD->mac) and the downloading (mac->HiMD) software will arrive this summer and no mac support at all for ANY other model (including NetMD)
  16. search for the thread created by me (The Low Volta) on my recording setup (with pics and tips from other members as well) *edit: did the search for you... here is the thread* and if you follow the link in my sig to greenmachine's mics/battery box you'll see that he has ood tips for attaching mics to glasses as well (with pics) further, members like A440, greenmachine etc have posted lots of tips and trick...just search the forums for posts/thread by them and you'll find lots of ideas
  17. and letting 'so 90s' (especially when misused as tekdroid indicated) stand between you and audio-bliss is ... well 'so childish' besides, in-ear phones do deliver better bass and do not look like headphones... and the panasonic RP-JE50 in-ear phones are only $25 so not that expensive either PS: I never said 'more expensive phones give more bass'... I did say that some phones are known to suit bass-heads, that a few of those have been reviewed in the 'best headphones under $100' and other headphone review threads here on MDCF and that the ultimately-cheap (i.e. free with the player) stockbuds will NOT deliver good sound (whether you're a bass head or not, they just plain and simply suck beyond belief... and this is no Sony thing, it's true for all stockbuds I have had the chance to try)
  18. PS: I just read the article the author of the above piece referenced in his paper for the part you quoted and I'm quite sure that it is actually just a misintepretation or at least a sloppy representation by E. Paul Ratazzi of the article he references... the article referenced just explains how the high density HiMD discs can be high density without changing the wavelenght of the laser. It does not say anything about other differences between the magneto-optical read and write-system of HiMD and (net)MD which were needed and which cause the actual fact (tested end tried) that you can't use 1gb discs (nor standard discs reformated to HiMD) in legacy recorders/players... HiMD discs (= three layered) use an extra switching layer which requires a different behaviour of the read/write-system than the standard (=legacy, two layered) discs. They have been able to design a HiMD read and write system that allows this extra behaviour AND still does the old trick (= the existing backwards compatibility). This is something completely different than saying that the old behaviour works with the new three-layered discs as well (= what could be understood when reading Ratazzi's paper)
  19. I haven't really read the thing you quoted and I must admit the quote is a bit unclear... but believe us (a lot of us tried ) backwards compatibility is only present as in: while HiMD is a different technology, the HiMD recorders can still use the old discs (60, 74 and 80 min), play old recordings and - 1st gen NH-models and the RH1 by themselves and the 2nd gen through the PC - can even create legacy discs playable in legacy players, but only on the old type of discs (60, 74 or 80 min discs)
  20. I have never read anything 'except for the above) that the upcoming software will allow mac-uploading of legacy recordings... as far as I understood it (the info here and from the Sony sites) the software still to come will only be for mac-> RH1 transfers (which isn't possible with the current 'Hi-MD music transfer') so I don't think uploading legacy recordings with mac will ever be possible (even HiMD recordings made with my NH900 will not upload I think... and this should be easier to implement than legacy uploading)
  21. at this moment there is no mac -> HiMD software (is promised for this summer)... only HiMD -> mac (the HiMD music transfer thing)... I haven't tried to input kanji in that one, but I don't think that is what you were after I guess...
  22. no harm done ... and just to say, the RM-MC40ELK IS the NH1's 3-line remote... the NH900 comes with the RM-MC38EL(K) and it does have a scroll wheel (only on the remote, not on the NH1's body) I bought it separately (and would advise you the same, get the NH900 and buy a RM-MC40ELK separately... as this will work fine with the HD5 and also with the RH1 should you decide to get it later)
  23. look Chris, I ain't going to start the bass discussion over again... but you really should learn to read what is written -> I didn't say 'better SONY headphones'... I only know the Sony stockbuds, but those do not give me any faith in their ability to produce headphones why not another brand? (panasonic, ATH, Sennheiser, koss,... as I said, read the thread I mentioned as it reviews a lot of makes/models) besides there are options besides Megabass to get a lot of (well enough for music-loving ppl) bass out of the Sony HiMDs (for ppl interested, see greenmachines thread on eq-settings for bass gain) but you do not seem to believe in them (I've given up that discussion) AND more importantly... there is more to music than bass!
  24. PS: mods this is one for the "find your minidisc"-section PPS: and that second question...should you still need to ask it again after reading/searching a bit... is for the "live recording"-section I guess
