panasonic RP-JE50 are ok as well!

sparks... you state it so nice and simple there but... oh you are sooo correct as well I have just learned a rockboxed ipod will play gapless (still have to research this a bit, but the lack of gapless was what really crippled ipod for me personally, as I have lots of live stuff and/or albums meant to be gapless) and after giving SS a shot again and it failing the music-library-manager-test once again, I'm now completely at a point of while being really happy about my HiMDs (NH900 and RH1) as recording devices, I will start thinking about a replacement technology for day-to-day portable listening
-
you are now learning that SS is (while it has improved quite a bit since 2.0 which I started on) still not the best audio program out there it is ok for uploading your own recordings from HiMD -> PC but as a music player and library handler it IMHO still falls short in ease of use. It is too heavy, too (unneedingly) complex, unintuitive and plain ugly I'm sorry to say, but the fact that SS sucks as a music library manager is the one main thing for me for not using the full portable player functionality of my HiMDs

please read and follow the rules for posting in the software assistance subforums, as A440 says, it is very hard to help without additional info... - does the MD play normally (older discs)? (if not first thing is to remove the battery for a minute then reinsert it to reset the machine) - what does the screen say exactly? what does SS say? - what system specs, other software, ... - MD connected with USB directly or through a hub - etc etc etc... just try to describe the the circumstances as clearly as possible as this simply helps ppl help you a bit off topic, but perhaps useful as well: about the MP3 errors; they can be caused by a faulty ID3 tag as SS only knows how to handle tags constructed totally following the standards and some programs (like among others winamp) are known not to adhere to these standards too strictly
-
have you checked the downloads section of these forums? it offers the latest SB as a download...I guess that poblem is solved and if you would have searched a bit it would have even been solved without the need for a new thread welcome to MDCF, hope you stick around!
-
I personally mostly encountered trouble with drive recognition in SB when at least one daemon virtual drive was mounted, unmounting all drives lifted the trouble...so I guess it really is strange it also occured before I had Nero and after I uninstalled Roxio (only had that for a really short period)
-
yeah, I have alcohol 120% and used to run deamon tools and nero...and it did mess up the drive recognitio from time to time, which was mostly restored by disabling the said programs... but as for limiting my experience that much, no, not really... importing CDs worked again after exiting deamon tools etc and I simply never use(d) the CD-writing function of SS. SS is a crap program that is slightly getting better, but for me the only useful function is importing my recordings. These get converted to wav, (edited if needed), backed up and if they need to be on a CD, I'll use a program that was meant to do that like nero or alcohol or even EAC or Burrrn... but SS isn't a CD-creator, heck it's even a lousy player... unless you really have the need to create atrac-CDs I really dunno why SS CD-writing not working should bother you and for ease of use, if gapless isn't crucial for you, simply keep your entire library in wma-lossless and you can burn from different programs and even without losing audio quality (why use a lossy file to create an audio CD?)

happy birthday J... go bananas (or did I already make that joke last year )

Problems with pc game F.E.A.R-please help
The Low Volta replied to mercury_in_flames's topic in The Loft
I just finished 'restoring' a PC from a friend of mine which was 'cripled' by Norton... well, it was mostly a human error (incorrectly unistalled Norton and installing Norman on top but it didn't work correctly because of leftover residue of Norton; further they downloaded lots of stuff and there was no real protection so I cleaned out some 8 viri and 160 instances of adware/spyware) I have personally only known trouble with Norton! I've had it 'preinstalled' on my portable and I've had to reinstall windows from a 'hacked'/stripped (or rather home-made from my legal) windows installation disc to prevent the registry settings being added (even if I chose not to install it with a fresh reinstall of windows, there would be Norton-traces present) so as Danny says, ditch Norton (ot really is no good) and get the AVG, AdAware, Spybot S&D combo and occasionally run TrendMicro housecall and you're safer than ever and no exra crap on your disc -
also programs that emulate drives (deamon tools, alcohol,...) are known to conflict with the drive recognition of SS and SB (but mostly for reading/importing as well as for writing)
-
just follow the procedure explained under the 'uncapped thanks to MDCF'-link in my signature and remember, not I nor MDCF can take any responsibility for mistakes while in service mode, this is completey at your own risk

@ vesuvio and reefbeef: great news, welcome to the RH1-club @ condenser: hm, what do you consider 'very short'? did you charge it properly? (through the mains connector, not from a computer) and fully? (the indicated time is only for 80%, for the further 20% you need to leave it another 2 hours to trickle charge) I easily get through a day for playback and just charge it in the evening (or overnight) and also for recording I haven't ran into trouble yet (but for the festivals I guess a spare battery wouldn't hurt)

How to build a Stereo Microphone and Battery Box
The Low Volta replied to greenmachine's topic in Live Recording
hot melt glue becomes liquid when heated (by the glue gun) and it dries really solid when it cools down again. Other glue types do not really show the same behaviour (they often do not dry out completely which leaves a mess or could even ruin other parts when inserted like your mic stereo-plug)... I wouldn't trust any other material personally, but if you really really really can't find hot melt glue (available in any decent DIY-store and you could always send someone to pick some up if you aren't mobile at the moment) I still would advise you to try the material you wanna use on something dispensible (but as much like he real battery-box as possible) first (and give it enough time to dry and test it rigorously before applying for real) it seems no-one here has found himself in the situation where they neede hot melt glue but culdn't get any, so I'm afraid no-one will be able to give you a definite answer... it's guineepig time -
gee sorry for the cryptyc title there fellows if it is under warranty, just let it be repaired on Sony expenses it just is more fun with a fully working machine hope everything works out!
-
'welcome back' and enjoy the little machine Rumz!
-
- it is not HiMD IIRC - and as it probably isn't under warranty anymore, it is not really worth getting it fixed as that could easily cost more than a new HiMD downloader (NH600D, RH710D) if you like the MD-idea, just search around for a new NH600D... this will offer you los more music on one disc and they come pretty cheap nowadays (often seen <$60 IIRC)

sorry vesuvio (and the rest)... I just had a hard week which made my words come out ever harsher than intended . But these posts I reacted to reminded me of all the posts at the time of the release of HiMD and then again at the release of 2nd gen and at every single release of a new SS-version in which everyone expected Sony to give legacy uploading and/or mac support and when they didn't, ppl blamed the 'idiots at Sony' (even though they never promised anything like it) now the RH1 has arrived and it does everything it promised: legacy uploads and (also, but separately) mac-uploading compatibility (for PCM and HiMD-modes). The only thing promised but not yet available is mac downloading of MP3s which is promised to arrive this summer... and again it is clear that ppl have taken their own wishes for real as they expected legacy uploading to mac. Sorry, but it was not promised, which everyone would have known if they had done some reading/research, and further it is probably not really possible at this moment (heck, they just learned to upload HiMD tracks recorded with a mac compatible machine only, which is already a leap forward from the mac-compatibly-recorded-PCM-only of the M-models... give them some time) So again, sorry vesuvio. Don't get me wrong, I did mean to be condescending as I am quite tired of all these 'Sony suck as they didn't yet deliver what I just dreamt up!'-posts... but as you didn't post like that, you do understand I was not being condescending towards you (indeed you never said anything like 'Sony-idots'). but on another level you were soliciting for the 'Sony-idot'-posts by 'promising' (in their place) that the 'unrestricted uploading for mac' would arrive this summer, which won't and which could lead easily to a whole load of 'Sony-idiots'-posts again but I will edit my original post so it is clearer what I was nagging about and the mods are free to remove/edit this post so it is all harmless (and especially because all of this, just like the (erronous) remarks on mac-uploading, is very much off topic ) PS: sorry to hear about your shipping problems! that sucks. one of the reasons I 'overpaid' my RH1 was so I could just walk home with it. Nothing worse than paying and waiting for something your eager to get your hands on.
-
ah, tha complicates things (I really should read up on the older models )... I did see this everlasting PC>>MD message before and removing all power did solve it
-
@ vesuvio: the above isn't really correct...- the software to allow downloading MP3s from mac -> RH1 is promised by Sony for this summer - there possiby/probably will not ever be any software for mac that allows uploading legacy recordings (even HiMD recordings made on a non-mac-compatible machine won't upload yet, so SP probably will be very hard to implement or possibly won't be feasible at all), while it already works as a charm on PC (which they did promise) by promising this stuff, which probably won't happen (as it sure wasn't promised by Sony) you might get the hopes up of the mac-using community. So unless you have any proof of Sony saying this, best not to post such, as it will lead to lots of ppl wrongly blaming Sony again or even blaming MDCF (and its posters) for 'braking promises'. @ all the mac-ppl (a group which I belong to as well), please, realize that unrestricted uploading of all modes to mac wasn't promised and is probably pretty hard to implement! This might anger you, but please direct that anger correctly! Do not go blaming these 'idiots at Sony' (again, like with all previous releases of HiMD gens and of SS-versions): they NEVER promised legacy uploads for mac, just read the manual correctly and you'll see. So if you should feel he irresitible need to blame someone as you already bought this pretty expensive machine and all you were interested in was legacy uploading to mac, perhaps blame yourself for not doing research for buying as the manual was available months before the RH1 was, you could have known (or perhaps even 'should have'... if the feature means that much to you, you should have researched before buying)! *edited for clarity

if SS doesn't play nice with the MP3s (it should convert them to atrac on the fly) it could be an issue with the MP3 tags. SS is irritatingly strict with ID3 rules so programs that tag not srictly by these rules (like winamp IIRC) create MP3s that are useless in SS... just use a retagger that follows the rules (like iEatBrainz) and try again (have a go at one problem MP3 first before you retag everything)
-
try not only turning the battery off, but removing it and waiting a couple of minutes, then reinserting and powering up... that should reset an MD as for SS and NetMD: - please do upggrade to SS4.0 (can be found for free at the Sony site or here in the downloads section) - to disconnect safely you need to press stop on the MD so it flashes 'disconnect ok' or 'safe to disconnect' or something alike on the MD-display or close SS/SB and then use the 'safe disconnect' service in XP (the green arrow in the bar at the bottom of your screen next to the time-display) but never just unplug it

Volume hack for MZ-RH1 *PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK*
The Low Volta replied to littlecx's topic in Minidisc
you need to enter the service mode which means that it is dangerous as changing anything not meant to be changed there could kill the unit... so as the difference is minimal (unlike with 1st and 2nd gen) and the risk of ruining the unit is real MDCF decided not to promote the hack so we/they wouldn't be stuck with a bunch of ppl with faulty units or even worse, blaming us for it so as with all hack, if you follow the procedure to the letter you should be ok, but remember: it is absolutely at your own risk and with the RH1 it is not really worth it IMHO (just buy some decent efficient headphones and it already is more than loud enough) -
congrats rich!

HiSP (256kbps) is NOT lossless... - flac, WMA-lossless, wavpack,...and even 'atrac advanced lossless' are lossless compression-types but they cannot be played on the portable device (even though AtAdvLossless and WMA could be usefull as they are compatible with SS) - MP3, atrac(3/+), ogg, WMA (and mostly all types that come 'in different bitrates')... are lossy compressions and mean they won't be the same as the CD. They might sound transparant which means you won't hear any real difference compared to the CD. MP3 encoded with lame of 128kbs (avarage) or above and HiSP (atrac3+ @ 256kbps) should be transparant and can be played with the RH1
