  1. I heard/read the same things as raintheory, but until the actual mac software is released (somewhere this summer) all this still is uncertain as noone is able to 'test' anything
  2. euh simply ...WOW... I thought I had caught the bug heavily ... I only have one, ONE MD (my trusty NH900) but it has seen so much use (but no abuse at all) that my friends only recognize me with the thing by my side OK, I will be getting an RH1, but then my NH900 will be used by my girlfriend as a replacement for her JVC MD for recording interviews (heck, with the RH1, I can simply start using the JVC with my spare set of mics so I will never miss one second of a concert anymore... heck why, I'll just let her keep the JVC as I will be able to upload her legacy recordings anyway and I'll use a double HiMD/PCM setup...) see you guys got to me now, I was perfectly happy with one and now I'm already getting greedy *edited for spelling
  3. I just went through 6,5 hours of meetings for which I was underprepared and very nerveous... boy talk about a hard day
  4. just got back (yesterday) from a working holiday (congres and little bit of vacation) in Greece (Athens and Santorini)... now I'm going through 6 pages of new posts here on MDCF in stead of wrking for my deadline (June 1st)
  5. hi there and welcome to MDCF, - the new software isn't out yet (the new SS is, but it is windows only and the new mac software is only due this summer) so noone has had a chance to test and the various Sony websites don't even agree whether the RH1 will be able to download from a mac or not - at this moment it seems quite unlikely the NH900 will ever work with mac without any changes done to it and this far there have not been any DIY-firmware upgrades (there was one for the RH10, to fix a bug, but it required you to send your machine to Sony, so I doubt they're going to do such a thing to get mac-compat on a discontinued model)
  6. if you are mainly oing to record... wait for the RH1 if you mainly want a player...the RH10 offers more playback info on its screen (otherwise the RH1 is better still) ... if you can spare the cash, just wait for the RH1 (it really is the best model thus far)
  7. I have the Senn MX450 (same as the 550, but without the volume control)... and while I do like the symmetrical cable, they are quite big for my ears and they do not offer a lot of bass, really not. still they are cheap backup phones for when the main pair (RP-JE50's in my case) die all of a sudden
  8. I actually enjoy reading your comments that much, atrain, I already start to chuckle when I see another one of those dimwit, nogood, irritating boneheads pop up... still, would be nice if they would just all die or at least find another 'hobby'
  9. wav = PCM --> 1.4Mbps (+/- 1411kbps) so it depends on what bitrate the disc was recorded in but as HiSP = 256kbps HiLP = 64kbps (or was it 48kbps...I never use this myself so feel free to correct me) you know that 1gb = 8 hours of HiSP and a 80 min CD (in wav/PCM) is already 700MB so just do the maths (the maths done here are done with very rough rounding and very crudely and could therefore be prone to faults): 8x60 = 480 minutes / 80 = 6 CD's worth of stuff so 6x700MB = 4+ gb
  10. glad you like it and welcome to the club of MD-lovers... hope you enjoy MD and these forums, see you around (always feel free to post reviews or pictorials and soundclips of your recordings to the relevant subsections)
  11. I'm afraid you will have to wait until the software is out to be really sure... keck, the Belgian Sony site still mentiones the RH1 takes an AA or a Li-Ion and has an AA-addon (now that would be an overpowered machine ) and sports quite a bit more flagrant faults... yes I do realize the Japanese site is a bit closer to the source, but it might have been designed before the software got to a point of mac-downloads and just wasn't updated since so sorry to say, but unless someone gets hold of the mac software (the first 'new' version) we will only have not very trustworthy website knowledge (and so we won't be able to confirm nor prove wrong your thoughts in any definitive way...only by quoting other (Sony) sites, like the trustworthy Belgian one that states that macs will be able to download music to the RH1)
  12. minidisc australia used to sell 'em cheapish (especially with the dollar being cheap compared to the euro) through ebay... but it's been a while since I've seen them there were also a couple of (mostly Chinese) sellers on ebay offering 5-20 packs IIRC, but I really didn't have much faith in those myself (perhaps someone else has good/bad first hand experience with those) check around as well, as I believe there are a couple of threads on the cheapest locations to get 1gb discs from, all around the world
  13. changing the region settings is no firmware upgrade, it's just a simple firmware hack (you change the settings within the existing firmware) but there is no download/overwrite (not even a PC-MD connection) involved so I really doubt that would fix it
  14. A440 means "unopened MZ-NH700 on ebay..." I guess
  15. you still need SS but with SS3.4 this isn't that big a deal anymore... it has improved quite a lot
  16. a very happy birthday to SlowMo: a BMX-stuntriding, sharp-drawing German fellow MD-lover who uses almost the same portable setup as me... Go Mo!
  17. please read and post according to the rules/guidelines for posting software problems (the red/pinkish link on top of the page) just a simple thing, have you tried to start SS first and then connect the MD? (the other way around won't work most of the time)
  18. I wasn't trying to start an argument either, just pointed out the (in my opinion funny) sound of it... I would have resorted to waiting for a long time (I'm not really the action type when it comes to such things) and further ctrl/alt/del'ing and forcing SS to quit; if this didn't work, which probably wouldn't, I would have 'pulled the plug as well (but I guess I would first remove the battery) point is, I don't think SS killed the hardware, nor yanking the cable (this can 'upset' the machine a bit, but that should be reset-able by removing the battery) I guess (as Bobt mentioned as well) that it just was a hardware problem to begin with and was elegible for replacement stuff like that happens in these days of low cost production and are certainly not limited to Sony. I had a bike and a skateboard truck (well that was a couple of years ago) fail on me within an hour of purchase... this did not only cause refunds, but also a couple of visits to the doctor so bottom line: yes, the problem probably was Sony-production's fault in the first place; but you didn't really follow standard procedures (which could be problematic if the repair ppl want to be difficult as you are not supposed to enter service mode) sorry if I sounded too harsh, not intended! and I really hope you get a replacement...
  19. see... A440, what I asked wasn't really impossible as I think his is a pretty good answer already as you se, I did learn already that simply looking isn't enough... but as you explained a bunch of things that will affect the sound, can already be seen quite clearly (ornaments, curtains, balconies )
  20. sorry to say this, but you did cause a bit of the problem yourself by yanking out the USB cable, then you just went into service mode and scrwed things up further in stead of taking it to the repair (while it was still under warranty)... and you are blaming Sony? don't get me wrong, I do feel sorry for you for what happened and sony isn't really innocent (on lots of things), but blaming Sony on this one is a bit far fetched. I the worst case it was a production fault and it would have been replaced under warranty...which I think is good, standard behaviour... but yanking cables, entering service mode without much of a clue... that's your own responsibility
  21. RobA, please: - I won't repeat all the advantages this model offers for recording...which it was intended for... been done often enough - I for one agree with Sony releasing one 'focussed' model (as there are still enough RH10's to be sold and Sony is having a hard time with HiMD as it is, no need to try and sell numerous models if it has been proven by the previous generation it didn't turn out to be very succesful...from a business point of view) - we have read all your thoughts/complaints about the RH1 over and over again (all those old threads still exist, you know) but: 1) you have already got an RH10 (almost for the price of a NH600 IIRC), 2) you have repeatedly told us you do not have the budget for any upgrades soon (hey perhaps there will be a next model by the time you do... I have skipped 2nd gen myself and now I can afford another one Sony offers the RH1 and I am happy about that), 3) unless we explain all sides and open up the discussion again (which I don't think we should be doing), simply stating such things might turn even more ppl away from HiMD so bottom line: you have had your say about this (in almost every thread mentioning the RH1)... let it go, let the ones that like it, like it and you just hang on and save some money till the next model BTW: IMHO, if you had kept your remarks sec and to the point and all bundled in one separate, clearly titled thread, Sony reps would have found/read/remembered them much sooner than now
  22. I had to send in my NH900 for repairs (something mixed up the button functions) and the RH10 is known to show these problems as well... many other models are known for small (and not so small quirks)... I'm not saying you shouldn't buy from Japan... just saying it's not really unlikely there will be problems with HiMDs (after all, this model again is quite a big leap in technology and it is only launched with firmware 1.0)... Tunster, not meant in any negative way, but please read some more threads on these forums before stating things as obvious while they are not. (Hi)MDs are sturdy, but not all models are built without faults besides, honestly, if you do not need it to record on the go, I guess recording directly in MP3 on a PC and then drag-n-drop to MP3-player actually is easier than recording on HiMD, uploading with SS, either converting to wav with SS and then to MP3 with something else or converting to MP3 with HiMD-Renderer, then transfering to MP3-player
  23. hi dex, am i absolutely sure about this?... well uh, sorry, no. Why not, well simply because I am not really able to read electronis layouts etc and I dunno whether the downloads section offers different regional service manuals or the different regional NH900s are all represented in the service manual, so I can't check what was posted in this thread... but it does sound like this guy did his research (well I'm a sucker for detailled explanations and he did mention the specific ohms of the resistors etc) so I'm inclined to believe him... it would be interesting if you (or someone else) could check this! but still, as I said, the volume on my NH900 did raise with the uncapping so I guess it is a double capping hardware+software and that removing the software part does something but not the whole thing so yes, that would mean there is a difference in uncapping the 1st and 2nd gen models (or at least between the NH900 and other models)
  24. there are a bunch of hacks (even more than the euro-uncapping) known for NetMD-models, but not for all models and as I never used NetMD I'm afraid I can't help you with that if possible you could try to get an RH1 from germany, their tax (VAT) on electronics is lower (than Belgian VAT at least) and you'd still have a european warranty... but still most German e-tailers do not sell outside Germany (AFAIK)
  25. Tunster...just don't state such things so strongly as 'truths' if you are not certain about them at all... as I said in another thread: there are known ways of uncapping the euro models (not all MDs tout court, but definitely all HiMDs released in europe this far, except perhaps the DH10P) but: - the code to enter the service mode is different for each generation so the currently known codes will probably not work for the RH1 - the 1st gen HiMD is known to have some hardware limiter as well as the software part, so it can only be partly negated (i.e. it will never have the same output as other regions) but this has not been found in the 2nd gen HiMD's (and yes, ppl have been studying service manuals I believe) - the region codes are not the same for each model (not even within one generation) so even if you do get into the service menu, be very careful changing stuff without good knowledge bottom line: the ppl trying to get rid of the Euro-capping will probably have to wait until someone gets hold of a service manual and better still, of service manuals depicting the internals of RH1s from different regions so we know whether there is hardware capping in these or not but I for one would rather have a Euro RH1 with local warranty and use it with sosme higly efficient phones than import a Japanes/US one... it's not like the RH10 where there were additional extras (LCD-remote and nice colours) with the japanese model... it's just the euro-capping (which will be - at least partially - defeated within little times)
