  1. first of all, welcome to MDCF and sorry to hear about your problems... but if you really want to be helped... please post according the rules (like they're described here )
  2. all Hi-MD models allow USB-to-pc transfer and SonicStage 3.1 (and it is very important that you install this one and not an older version!!) has a wav-converter built in. so just search these forums for other info... (there is A LOT of info on all Hi-MD models, and especially without concrete questions it's definitely too much to repeat here) just one last warning: DON'T get any Hi-MD model with a "D" in the name (like NH600D) as they don't have a mic in!! good luck with your search and welcome to MDCF
  3. maplins carries a similar thingy... just search on these forums... some UK user has bravely tried it and was impressed
  4. if you can get a good deal (i.e. not more expensive than the newer machines ) on a nh900...go for it. The extra safe feeling (darn, sounds like some sanitary towels commercial ) you get from the AA-addon, the fact that it will charge with the charger alone (no need for the stand), the non-proprietairy gumstick battery that is easily upgradable, and the still quite rugged build will suit you very much... If you can't get a good deal on a nh900 or you really wan't mp3 playback (I think you don't really care about that) get a rh10 I personally would stay away from the (though very nice looking) nh1 as it simply has too much specialities (need the charger, proprietary battery, need the remote for quite a few functions,...) just my two cents... just hope you enjoy Hi-MD as much you have MD
  5. but if you were to buy a separate preamp, you could also take advantage of the digital uploading to pc (and other) abilities of a Hi-MD... as you can then record through line in (in stead of mic in) which would bypass the noisy internal preamp from the recorder you still have to ask yourself what he eventaul recording are needed for (do they have to be on a pc at any given time? do they have to be very high quality (read pcm)? etc...
  6. I kinda knew... but was just trying to get this thread back on topic but then again...here in Belgium I think it's just as illegal as copying fm-radio on audiocasette (which is not as far as I know)
  7. ok, we've continued this thread long enough now... so just remember kids: let's all stay on the right side of the law (and use audacity to record webradio, or is this a very stupid idea? )
  8. I guess I agree with their reaction to keep MDCF away from the software hacks&cracks route... but then again I also think there could (should) be some sort of 'recording copywritten sounds' disclaimer among the 'live recording' stickies just to be on the safe side (something similar was brought up by Ozpeter and Dex @ the time of the 'live recording gallery'-opening, but hasn't been installed yet I believe...)
  9. wow and to say I'm pretty happy with my Senn MX350 'buds... that were only €9... makes me glad not to have super-ears
  10. I think he's trying to stealth record his little brother's birthday party or something similar nothing illegal...no sir, definitely not! (I'd like to add 'just kidding!!' before the flames rise up again) p.s.: I actually do believe I came across quite some warnings about 'tricks and advice on MDCF not being intended to record copywritten material' when first looking for recording info
  11. first of all...welcome to MDCF (these forums) then: my opinions...with Hi-MD recorders you can record in PCM (i.e. cd-quality), and I think that with older MD-recorders real SP was the best quality you could get... so that would make Hi-MD better. They also allow digital uploading of those recordings, so if your recordings need to be on a computer (for editing/ pasting on images/ or whatever) this is VERY important as analog realtime recording affects soundquality... again Hi-MD wins. between the different Hi-MD-models there is little or no diference in recording quality...only the other features (which could be usefull for recording ease!! like a backlit remote/lcd on the recorder, type of battery used,...) differ (search around in these forums, there's a lot of info on the different models and it's too much just to repeat it all here) as for recording quiet sounds in stereo, the type of mic(s) used will be more important than the type of Hi-MD-recorder used. First of all...definitely make sure you don't buy a mic tht directly plugs in the recorder (without a lead) as it will record the machine's noises!! for better info on mics...check out the live recording subforums...again a lot of info on mics and on recording strategies and again way too much to simply rehash here so good luck searching, and hope (Hi-)MD will please you as much as it pleases me!
  12. but remember kids: "always run the SonicStage BackUp Tool" before upgrading! otherwise we'll see a new thread within a few days going "just lost my music library after I did what the MDCF-mods said, now you tell me how to fix this" (but you are right...SS2.2 is not relevant anymore)
  13. they do, at least if we can believe the makers of Battery University
  14. I have recently read some problems mentioned of the 74 min TDKs with the plastic shutters getting jammed in newer machines (i.e. the MZRH-10) so perhaps a little caution when using these...
  15. thank you atrain... if only I was as smart in real life cause I'm hanging around here @ MDCF in stead of writing my thesis...
  16. just saw in the title of the thread "NetMD 707" so I guess we found the problem... try searching these forums for ways to record your MD's to a pc with the least quality loss, there are quite a few threads covering this good luck and welcome to the forums by the way p.s.:if you're serious about recording and don't wanna upload the realtime way, go on the hunt for a Hi-MD, sometimes you can find 1st gen models quite cheap and the 2nd gen really aren't THAT expensive actually... but still, good luck, hope you find your way about MD
  17. stupid question perhaps... but do you own a MD (everything before Hi-MD appeared) or a Hi-MD (MZNH-600D,600,700,800,900,1 or MZRH-710,910,10)? as MD (even with SS3.1, which does not affect this at all) will not transfer digitally to PC, only realtime recording is possible with MD as far as I know (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong)
  18. As far as I know, bookmarking only works for complete tracks... i.e. you can mark a track from your library and later choose only to play those tracks marked. You can't put a mark at second 40 in a certain track I think. So you could mark the whole audiobook (at least if it's one track) but you can't put marks at different times within that track... please correct me if I'm wrong, but at least that's how I have always understood bookmarking on md
  19. no problem... just three threads on the same subject within that little time freaked me out a bit... and about impatience... remember this is a forum and not a chatroom: therefore some of the wisest and most interesting commentators (no not me ) who happen to live on the other side of the globe won't always respond within e few minutes (or even hours) there is some issue with the rh10 not displaying all letters in the edit title menu (which is not really crippling I guess), but you'd be better of wih the comments of an owner (as I'm only a poor 1st gen nh900 owner, and a very happy one for that I must say). and just check some of the threads on these machines, 'cause there are some things to keep in mind especially connected to the region you're buying from... but again as a 1st gen'er, I know very little of that. good luck with hi-md and WELCOME TO MDCF!!
  20. well... now we are, but unfortunately it only began @ hi-md
  21. as promised in your doubled and hopefully removed thread... my recommendations: 1. as clearly answered already: ALL hi-md except for models with "D" (like NH-600D) can record through analog 2. AND through a (external) mic (none have an intenal for memos!) 3. sound quality a) for recording: all hi-md produce quite the same quality recordings (depends on mics used!!) b ) for playback: there seems to be a little difference depending on the AMP used (HD or digital or something...) but I really dunno anything about that (maybe anyone else here?) 4. again as stated above ALL hi-md do this, no other type (net-md or anything else) does so hi-md it is! 5. depends more on the SonicStage software (which is the same for all hi-md models) than on anything else, but since all hi-md use USB1, this will always be reletively low (but certainly much faster than realtime!!) 6. a) sturdy -> nh1 wins (all magnesium), followed by nh900 (half mag/half plastic) and all the rest (all plastic) but remember that polymeres have upgraded a lot, so the all plastic models won't crack unless you intend to throw 'em around and stuff b ) batt life: lower end models of the 1st gen (nh600-800) take AA's only. they will run for a long time and are easily replaceable; nh900 and the 2nd gen models (I think) run on a gumstick batt (upgradeable to a very good one) and have an external AA-addon (for those extended use moments); only the nh1 has the gumstick as the only possibility (so if batt life is THE issue, don't get the nh1) c) lit display: on the recorder, only the rh10 has a very nice OLED which lights up even the dullest party, all the rest feature unlit lcds; on the remote: here there are a lot more factors playing... (lie which country/region you're buying from and stuff; and whether you want to invest in a supplementary remote) but I can attest tha the nh900 one is well lit and the nh1's too (search the forum for more info on this... there are a lot of topics about remotes!!) 7. again ALL hi-mds (even the D-models) have USB1 accessories depend on the region you're buying from i.e. japan gets more than euope and n-am and stuff, where and what to buy for improving your machine? just browse and search these forums... there are topics concerning 'phones, batteries, cargers/adapters, soft/hard carrying cases, anything you can dream of... but you have to do a lttle effort and search! mzrh710/910/10 are 2nd generation models (ordered by increasing features) and as their biggest difference with the 1st gen, they support native MP3 playback (no conversion needed) mznh600D/600/700/800/900/1 are the 1st gen models (again by increasing features) and can only play MP3s after conversion to an attrac-type all of these models use SonicStage (SS) and/or SimpleBurner (SB). important (no mather which model you use) is to use the latest version of both (available here on MDCF for free ) which will cure a lot of the problems you read about... hope this was a little bit helpfull, but for future uses of these forums (MDCF) please don't start a new thread on the same topic if you still have a question and browse a bit and/or use the search function (it is there for a reason and it works just fine) 'cause A LOT of the info given here was already provided (multiple times) in other threads
  22. hmm, except for "ç" and a couple of accents (´, ` & ^) French uses the standard latin alphabet (dunno how strange you consider that?)
  23. I haven't heard results yet (and haven't tested it myself) but there was this trick with setting autotrackmarks to 60min which was supposed to overrule the other (silence-triggered) automarking so you'd only end up with a few tracks in stead of a lot of autotracked-by-silent-moments tracks I would say, give it a try and post results
  24. through minidisc.org (which I found with a9.com, looking for 'before-I-buy' info and actually with the question nh700 or nh900?) like a lot of ppl here I guess... this was the first MD-forum I found and I must admit, I have never felt the need to look any further: all my questions up untill now have been answered and evne some I hadn't asked yet (the euro-cap hack hurray!) so keep up the good work! (and indeed, there are a lot of nice ppl around... little flaming or spamming, I really like that, I hate forums where the agression outweighs the info)
  25. same here, I only use SS to get my own recordings on my PC, but even then I think it's very important to get the latest (tested ) version... that way I have never lost a recording nor encountered any strange crashes or anything at all really and I would like to keep it that way. As we all should realize from time to time... this is all relatively new technology (Hi-MD that is) and even though this shouldn't be an excuse for rubbish software, it DOES explain why it is better to keep up with the (small) improvements in every version of SS... so wheher one likes it or not: one can only gain by updating. as for all possible 'no internet connection'-troubles... the mighty fine ppl here @ MDCF (especially Daijoubu) are currently working on a standalone installer for the latest SS (already available in beta version here ) well, depends on how you look at it... the way you were trying to use it would make sense, if there wouldn't have been some extra features on the Hi-MD machines... For instance, you could record in PCM, upload and without any loss convert to any codec you want... Or for long stretches: record in Hi-SP on a 1gig disc, upload, convert to whatever with relatively little loss... Or you could make use of the wav-conversion option and digitally remaster your own recording AND remove all the DRM-rubble and then convert/burn it to whatever you wan't... I could go on for quite a while, but if you actually aren't convinced that the pros (the possibilities and improvements of Hi-MD over old MD) outweigh the contras (there isn't direct backwards compatibility as you'd like it, but then again, with MD there was almost no option to digitally upload any recording at all), there should be a lot of ppl willing to buy your barely used machine...
