I think we've lost him.

If they've got numerical titles (e.g. 001, 002 etc) try sorting them by "File Path". If this isn't showing in the columns in SonicStage, right click somewhere in the column headings. This will give a list of the possible column headings; tick it.

Time taken to transfer tracks in mp3 vs ATRAC
Hungerdunger replied to Hungerdunger's topic in Software
Anyone???? -
In another thread a few weeks ago, I mentioned that one of the plus points of the RH1 is that you can save time by transferring mp3s without having to convert them to ATRAC. Bobt, who appears to have a more modern and powerful PC than I, suggested that there shouldn't be much difference in the time taken. I've just imported a 30 minute Podcast in mp3 format. To transfer it "as is" to the RH1 took 18 seconds, but converting it to 132kbps took 2 minutes, 28 seconds, while converting to 64kbps took even longer at 3 minutes, 22 seconds - 11 times longer than not converting it. This is a shame, as I'd like to use my other minidisc players more, but often I just don't have the time to convert half a dozen podcasts so I'm stuck with the RH1. I'd be interested to know what other people have found. If I upgrade to a new and more powerful PC am I likely to find much improvement? (If it helps, my current PC is a Pentium 4 2GHz, with 1Gb RAM, running XP SP3 and SonicStage 4.2.)

This feature definitely doesn't support mp3 or WAV; not sure about PCM.

Adding functions to the MZ-NH600
Hungerdunger replied to Avrin's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
I listen to a lot of spoken-word podcasts, and if I'm getting behind with them I often speed them up. Obviously sound quality isn't too important for these, but I'm sure that my RH1 gives a much better result than my NH1 - perhaps Sony had improved the technology for the third generation. -
I can understand how you get attached to these visitors. We have a patch of woodland; some five or six years ago my wife managed to get a robin to eat off her hand - see picture. Once the summer comes he disappears, then when the weather starts getting cold he re-appears. Obviously he's getting quite old for a little bird, so the last two autumns we've been resigned to the fact that he might not return, but sure enough he's back again for this winter and having a regular daily feed.

I don't know how much interest there is here for the Olympus recorders, but here is a UK review of the LS-11, and if you have 20 minutes to spare, a Podcast containing some sample recordings.

Are you sure about that bobt? Maybe it's my ageing computer (about 6 years old, 2GHz, 1GB RAM), but I find there is a HUGE difference, which is why I now use my RH1 more than my NH1. I've just done some tests using SonicStage 4.2. Transferring 14 music MP3s totalling around 50 minutes to my RH1 with no conversion took 1 minute 30 seconds. Using the RH1 to convert them to ATRAC 256kbps took 4:36, and doing the same conversion on my NH1 took 7:05. The results with one 45 minute podcast were even worse. The RH1 took 22 seconds with no conversion while the NH1 took 11:15 to convert it to ATRAC 256. As I download and transfer around 15 - 20 podcasts per week, you can see why I've been using the RH1. What I'd like to know is whether my results are representative, or can I expect improved performance from my NH1 when I treat myself to a new PC early next year.

These points come immediately to mind (tho I'm sure there are others): Pros: IMHO the most beautiful of all the portables - very sleek and lightweight. From my own experience a real work-horse. I've had problems with several of the other Hi-MD machines, but not this one. Has speed control on playback Date-stamps recordings Cons: Limited functionality on unit - you need the RM-MC40 remote No "side-car" for AA batteries. Once the internal battery has exhausted, you've had it. Requires its own unique charging stand. Used without the remote, the display is very limited compared to the RH910's. If only you could transfer MP3 files to it without conversion to ATRAC, I'd use it all the time (and would have three or four stockpiled in reserve)

Sorry, I can't help with the eject problem. I'm now on my third NH900, after the first two suffered from malfunctioning buttons. I never found a cure, but I found that if I pressed a button numerous times - say 100 or so - it seemed to alleviate the problem for a few days. Once you get quick at it, it only takes a few seconds.

Are you using "Jackson" to mean 5 UK Pounds? If you are, that's an incredibly good deal. BTW, for our American cousins, it is short for Jackson 5. For other quaint English usages for currency, this might be worth a visit.

No problem - Yesterday I bought this one instead, so as long as it's working OK, I'm now future-proofed for a few years! I thought that 170 UKP for a 6-month old machine wasn't too bad, when Sony Centre wanted 250UKP and Amazon's price had shot up to 260UKP; however I received notification this morning that their price has just plummeted to 190UKP. Ah well.
-
And if only you'd posted it here 2 hours earlier I might have been able to buy it - they seem to be going for about 40 - 50UKP more than this. Seriously, how did you spot this? Do you spend hours trawling through ebay for mis-listings, or do you have a secret method? I have a search set up for "RH1", but obviously that's why I missed this one.

I think it's because you typed B ) . (Without spaces between the characters) This is interpreted as an emoticon. Like this: .

Is it by any chance this one? If so, I posted this topic about it last week. If it is, then I'd be interested to know whether you were aware that you were getting the unit on its own and nothing else and that the advert was misleading. Edit: Ignore this - see sfbp's post below: I think this may be the link you are looking for.

Moon Not on general release in the UK, or at least this part of it, which is a shame as it's one of the more intelligent movies I've seen this year.
-
In a word "yes". You need to think of it as an external storage device. It will store all types of files, but you won't be able to do anything with them using your Hi-MD player, apart from transferring them to another device.
-
Just in case anyone here is bidding for this RH1, you should know that even though it says that the remote control is included, it isn't. I found this out while asking the vendor a couple of questions about the machine, and even though I suggested she make this clear on the advert, she hasn't. It's currently up to 155UKP, which would be fine if everything was included, or if you had a spare remote and didn't worry about this, but I suspect someone is going to be very disappointed.

Try Options >> Contrast. This may (or may not) improve the visibility.

Obviously it depends on your musical tastes, but if you enjoy mainly American/British music from the last forty years or so, Radio Paradise takes some beating. www.radioparadise.com

Can Sony MZ-NH800 Tuner be used with other units ?
Hungerdunger replied to MD4ME's topic in Minidisc
Two more uses for Speed Control: Slowing down music without altering the pitch so that beginners can play along with it; and speeding up speech recordings to get through them more quickly. I use the latter one myself quite a bit as I listen to a lot of Podcasts, and I find that for many of them I can set the speed to +40% and they are completely comprehensible. -
I agree with you, but what I was getting at was the sheer inventiveness needed to come up with unusual sounds, and to get so many "layers" of sound using only a four-track machine.

Anyone who's been following this topic may find this programme interesting; it's a two hour special looking at George Martin's production of the Beatles' albums, as well as explanations of how the originals have been remastered. You can find it on the newsgroup alt.binaries.sounds.radio.bbc. The programme was posted in 2 parts on 8 September, or find it by searching for "producers". I must admit, that while I realised that these recordings were ahead of their time, I didn't realise just how cutting-edge they were when you consider how basic the equipment was which they had at their disposal.

Thanks - that worked.
