He's looking for a recording of "You've lost that lovin' feline" by the Righteous Brothers
-
That's a very good price, especially as some of the UK ones are going for nearly the price of a new one. However, you will need a remote if you want to title tracks or discs, or if you want to change the playback speed (which i use a lot for spoken-word recordings)

Does the NH700 have the special socket which will accept the tuner remotes? I don't have the NH700, but I know that I can't plug my MC39LT into any of my other portables.

Are there any MD car stereos with a line in?
Hungerdunger replied to willdashwood's topic in Minidisc
For our car (VW Golf) we had one of those "workarounds" installed, but for our van we use one of those FM transmitters. I can't comment on how it compares for sound quality, but as the van is quite noisy it does what we need, is cheap and doesn't need installation. -
Is the MZ-RH1(Europe ver.) compatible with RM-MC38ELK?
Hungerdunger replied to Tidal's topic in Minidisc
Yes it can - see here for details. Before you do it, read the comments on that thread. Personally I think the improvement is only minimal, so you need to balance that against something bad happening while you are in service mode. -
Minidisc report covers the format's history and development

Try this link. -
My hands were starting to shake from not getting my daily fix of MD discussion.

On a recent holiday I tried making some outdoor recordings using my ECM-719 microphone (it's this one), but found that they were spoiled by wind noise. (It was quite breezy most of the time). Is there any material I can cover the microphone with which will help to reduce the wind noise without affecting the sound quality?

It might also be worth looking at amazon.co.uk. Try searching for "minidisc 80".

Don't shout at me, but I can I assume you have made sure that the "Hold" button on each remote is set to OFF?

interested in buying a minidisc for field recording
Hungerdunger replied to aphexpusher's topic in Live Recording
That reminds me of the first time I tried recording bird song. I took the MD into our wood about 1.00am and set it to record, so that it would capture the birds when they started singing at dawn. When we played it back we kept hearing what sounded to us like an engine being started and then allowed to die down every couple of minutes, which was spooky as there was no way there could have been an engine within a quarter of a mile. Eventually I realised it was the MD motor. I think I had attached the mike to the same branch as the MD and presumably this helped pick up the sound. Since then I've always made sure they are on separate branches and as far apart as possible, and the problem has gone away. -
I've just tested it on 4.2 and it works fine. Generally people here recommend either 4.2 or 4.3 (for Vista users) so why not upgrade to one of these and try again?

Minidisc: The tactile experience in the digital age

You've reminded me of this -
My ageing Koss Sportapros are about give out on me, so I'm looking for a replacement. I use them when I'm doing manual work outside because they are very light and tend to stay put, and also are not too expensive should I accidentally damage them. What I like about the Sportapros: Good sound; lightweight; can be worn over or behind the head. What I don't like about them: They look terrible. Before I buy another pair, would anyone like to suggest any alternative phones for a similar price? Currently I can get the Sportapros here in the UK for around 20 UKP (30 USD).

Have a look here; it looks as if the machine doesn't have a timer switch.

On the "Transfer" screen of SonicStage, set the MD mode (Right side of screen) to Net MD. Click on the "Briefcase" icon in the middle of the screen. Select the third option - SP Transfer mode. I believe the bitrate for this transfer is 105kbps, but as bobt pointed out, if you're playing the discs in a car player, you should find the results quite acceptable.

a. The controls are fiddly and confusing Which model to you have? In what way do you find the controls confusing? b. Sonicstage continually stops working and yes, I ran it as administrator What version of SS are you using? Some older versions were unstable. Do you get any particular error messages when it stops? c. I tried to drop and drag from my music files. The walkman tells me no track, yet my computer tells me the tracks are there. No one has ever claimed that you can drag and drop music files. Maybe a bit of research would have told you this before you spent your money. You can use a Hi-MD disc for file storage, but you won't be able to play the files unless they are imported via SonicStage. d. Looks like the only way I can get things recorded is using Simple burner and a cd. Or asking here for advice.

tekdroid - I agree with most of your points, especially its looks and reliability - in fact I still use mine as much as my RH1. (And I have a back up in case I ever damage the original one). The main reason I have an RH1 is because it can play MP3s without conversion. I listen to a lot of Podcasts and this feature really saves me a lot of hassle. It also handles the pitch control feature better than the NH1 - less "artifacts" (I think that's the right word) in the playback.
-
I was surprised to see two NH1s being sold tonight on ebay (UK) for 156UKP and 166UKP (Including postage) (Roughly 230 and 245USD). For not much more you could buy a brand new RH1. I don't know whether this is an indication of the quality of the model, or whether people are getting carried away with their desire to have one.
-
One more pro if you listen (like me) to Podcasts or if you have a large collection of mp3s: It can play MP3s without conversion which means quick uploading via SonicStage. I know the second generation (RH10 etc) also had this feature, but (as many people have reported here) the sound quality was never satisfactory.

Well mine goes out and about with me nearly every day (in a pouch on my belt) and is lasting pretty well. It must be over 2.5 years old now. There are two problems with mine, both of which I have seen reported here - (i) the jog lever sometimes malfunctions. E.g. if you push it to Fast Forward, instead of moving further along the track, it moves to the next track; (ii) sometimes it won't start operating (on battery power) and to get it working I have to remove the battery and replace it. Both the faults are annoying, but not serious. Otherwise it's fine.

In the UK you can buy them from here, but at an eye-watering £65.93. I got one far cheaper on ebay last year, but the display was scratched. The seller said they would all be like that and gave me a small refund. I'm looking to get another one but haven't seen any on ebay for a while, and don't really feel like spending £65 on a new one.

I'd say you've got a good buy there with the NH700. Although it's not top-of-the-range (i.e RH1) it has HiMD technology and should be a good introductory player for your son. In addition it is far cheaper than the RH1 too. I've got the NHF800 which I believe is similar apart from having a radio built into the remote, and I enjoy using it.

Here's the thread I mentioned earlier.
