Well i know now why the phones werent that comfortable. When you open them up, you have to pull the phones- extend them, till you get a click. Unfortunatly, my head seems to be 'too small' for the fitting haha, I will have to consider whether their design is slick enough to compensate for me wearing them over a hat

Do buy.com charge tax and duties etc>? Or do they get round it?

The sound quality is all the same. What differs is how good the disc is at keeping out dust. The better they don this, the less you get errors etc. The sony md 2000, with a completely metal shell, was classed as a proffessional disc,As was the tdk XA-PRO. Those discs cost something like 20 pounds for one. I have like 25 ES blanks, and although they dont sound any different, they supposedly have lower error rates and prevent dust better. It's best to stay away from discs with plastic shutters also.

Sony MDS-JB980/s Pictorial-Review
mercury_in_flames replied to mercury_in_flames's topic in Product Reviews/Pictorials
hmm,i guess. Sonic stage doesnt let u record via optical out when u transfer the stuff to disc does it (to those with regular md decks..?) ? I dont think it does with regular md, But if they didnt put SMSC on himd PCM recording transfered via s.s, then that would be the reason why they didnt put optical outs on himd decks. hmm. -
Sony MDS-JB980/s Pictorial-Review

Using the JB980 for playback while connected to a computer I always do this when I;ve just transfered music with sonic stage via net md. It has the advantage over regular listening, where instead of scrolling through all the tracks using ams, the TOC (table of contents) is actually on your computer screen, so whatever is available to play back on the deck is easy to see Another cool feature of doing this, is that like when playing back atrac files that are actually on your computer using sonic stage, you can choose where in the song to skip to, i.e no fast forwarding, just click and you;re there. All of this is probably very basic for those who have decks aleady, but this is cool all the same, at least if you are used to doing it all only by a deck. -

max bit rate?

Well i will say that that my thoughts are on a pair of phones that are right out of the box, so things will change i assume. Out of the box: there isnt much bass to speak of unfortunatly, although the clarity is pretty good. My former mdr-q55's had trebble that sounded like this right of the box, a tad harsh. When i first listened to the q55's i thought 'these are crap', While this isnt the case with the fc7's, I am hoping a bit of burn in will increase the bass, and make the trebble a bit less harsh. We'll see. From what i can hear, these are better suited to dance/trance music, although will be better for listening to rock music than say, my ath-a900's. Looks: Well these things do look pretty sleek. The metallic blue makes them stand out, in a good way of course. Comfort; Well i can defintely say that my ex81;s are more comfortable. These have a sort of spring that makes you pull the pads down a bit to suit how the height of your ears, and for their folding design, they are made to want to fold in, meaning you get a tad bit of presure pushing inwards. This does not compare anywhere near to the pain of using over ear clip on phones, the mdr-q55's. I will wear these for another 20 mins and report back. Design: These puppies fold similar to the style of a pair of px100's in the sense that there are hinges, except that instead of the pads being flat when folded and side by side, these pads are up against eachother. The rubber on the cable is better quality than that of my ex81's but I am pretty sure that if anything goes in a year, it will be the hinges. Pics to come. Onkyo FR-N9 Review and Pictorial
mercury_in_flames replied to ingoo's topic in Product Reviews/Pictorials
oic. Im sure it has plenty if its 70 watts rms per channel though. -
Now that i've got my deck, which i am thouroughly (sp?) enjoying by the way, this question has dawned on me lol, For those of you who own himd portable/s, and a legacy md deck: Do you find it a neusance making recordings to play back on your himd unit as well as your deck, i.e recording twice for each device? Or do you simply use one disc, as a rewritable music device for on the go, and whatever you record to regular md, you just record once and put on the rack, along with your other 'regular' discs?? I suppose it would be more of a neusance if you recorded in PCM or 320kb/s atrac, and used many himd discs. What I want to know is, For those of you that have regular md decks, does your himd portable make your deck redundent at times? Are you considering selling the old deck/keeping it, and ultimately getting a himd deck as well?

What do you look for in earbuds/headphones?
mercury_in_flames replied to WaywardTraveller's topic in 'phones
Haha, thats how ey. None of my friends spend anywhere near as much as I do on audio gear. Ive probably spent about £885 on my gear, and I'm a student with only a sat/sun part time job. -
haha, welcome back. Ive managed to compromise with owning the HD5, and getting an md deck, all in the past 6 months. My deck is centre stage for music entertainment at home, while my hd5 goes out with me. I actually got the deck AFTER my hd5, haha. Doubt I will ever succumb to hi-md though. Not while the himd decks out there dont have optical out ports. Susie, dont you find it a neusance having a legacy md deck and a himd recorder/player?? I am afraid that if I did get a himd portable, it would make my jb980 redundent, and thats the last thing i want, having forked out for an extra 2 years warranty.

I should have mine before this friday, we'll see.

Onkyo FR-N9 Review and Pictorial
mercury_in_flames replied to ingoo's topic in Product Reviews/Pictorials
haha, maybe so, but every system, should be able to reach extremes, imho. If you have a separate amplifier, you get bass and trebble controls. Whether this one can or not, i would've thought you could make the room shake a little -

Thanks dude. On another note, I was checking out the Onkyo HIMD decks at a.c and you are right about no optical out being a bummer ingoo. Its not the illegal copying that I would want it for anyway, Its simply for if you go to a concert, record it, make track marks, you would at least want to be able to have an optical out for that, right? I can understand not giving consumers an optical out for the quality of PCM, but I mean, at least give the option of an optical out for certain bit rates . -
Have you given the free downloads away yet?? I;d be surprised if u hadnt, but thought i;d ask.
-
Oh, by the way, I imported 2 cd;s and neither of them had the option to show album art. I still have to add a jpeg myself.

Over at atraclife, an HD1 owner has tried the lossless option, works well supposedly, but i cant be bothered with it, haha. I doubt it sounds that much better, and if you cant transfer those files to regular md using net md, then theres no point, imo. I rip all my music in 132atrac specially, so that i dont have to convert or re-rip any music, if i should want to put the tracks on md.
