After seeing other posts here about bargain prices in the US and Canada, Aussies paying $499 for an nh700, $599 for an nh800 suddenly becomes very expensive compared to many other countries.

What's the cause of Aussie overpricing ???

my '700 cost $469 (at sale time) and a T shaped mic (purchased 1 year earlier) ecmds70p cost $149 (full price).

edit

The $469 pack also came with a bonus pack containing a bag and battery charger.

Believe or not but Sony Australia have improved, they have slashed $100AUD off they RRP in the last 2 years. The main reason for the price difference is market size, our 10% GST and the duty attached to bringing these units in.

We live in a expensive country!

Our Hi-MD blanks are on par with the US though, RRP for the Hi-MD blanks are $9.95AUD while in the US they are around $7 which is roughly the same.

Audiocubes look very expensive for Hi-MD units, it works out cheaper to buy them here in Aus smile.gif

^ actually i have to agree with sefu.

for example the hd1 aus RRP is 590 but from bluetin where things are usually cheaper [singapore/japan] it's 789 aus $.

you buy local if you wan't to support local business, easier warranty claims & more detailed support [store dependant].

buy import for cheaper prices [not always!] & stuff you can't sorce locally.

YES AUSSIE's CERTAINLY HAVE TO PAY WAY TOO MUCH FOR ELECTRICAL GOODS! sad.gif

And it's annoying, because say you go to www.amazon.com you can find lots of electrical products, which you can buy for a lot less $$$, BUT amazon.com ONLY ship books and DVD's to Australia :'(

First, always remember: US price is ALWAYS without sales tax.

Second AUD 499,-- converts down to 296 Euros. Recommended retail price for the NH700 in Germany is 300 Euros. And we have a sales tax of 16%...

@Tartan: The AUD 469,-- you paid is close to the average retail over here. However, Amazon has currently the best deals over here as well, but that can change any day...

This is probably because they'd rather avoid the endless hassles caused by the fact that warranties generally do not transfer country to country. For instance: most computer manufacturers in North America sell the same models in both Canada and the US. Their warranties don't go where the computer goes, however; meaning that if you take your notebook from Canada into the US, and suddenly need service [even if it was clearly a defect issue covered by warranty] the only way to have it done is to ship the unit back to Canada.

Most customers, even if they have this explained to them [read: even if they are smashed over the head with it repeatedly] cannot grasp this concept and get very angry with the place that sold them the equipment [and the people who work there].

Sony also have fantastic rules such as - if you buy your equipment from a non-Sony-accredited dealer, it has no warranty at all. None. Zip. Zilch. Zeeeero.

Hey Sefu,

Slightly left of topic but you mentioned Hi-MD blanks ;-)

I bought my MZ-NH1 in September here in Melbourne, and I still can't find anyone with stocks of 1GB discs for it.

Anyone have any clues on availability in Melbourne, Vic, Oz?

Try JB hifi - The one in the city has them for sure (they're in the Blank DVD/CD/MD Section). The One at Highpoint however, has them behind glass next to the MD units for sale (have to ask a staff member to unlock and sell it.)

Edit ---

Note that $499 was the retail price here in Aus, but I havn't found 1 shop who wouldn't sell it for 450 when I asked (NH700). I personally got mine for 515 with the T mic. Note, it was not a display model and it came with the Quick Charger package as well (so thats not the reason for price reduction).

I have a shipment coming in tomorrow but its gone from pre orders. I think there is another shipment coming in mid week. Fingers crossed because we have been waiting over 3 months now.

For the record we have the NH700 for $449 with the bonus pack smile.gif

I bought my blank 1GB discs at JB-Hi Fi's at Bondi Junction in Sydney. $8, so got 4. They had 20 in stock then, and I have been told that some Melbourne JB's have them in stock as well. Best option, ring them up and ask if they have any, then put them on hold so no-one can take them until you can go and pick them up!

The great bargain that started this post is at http://www.minidisc-canada.com/shopexd.asp?id=368 and simple maths will show the price difference.

Coincidentally, my '700 and 3 himd discs also came from JB at Bondi Junction too.

What's in Sefu's '700 bonus pack ??? Is it the same one that was offered in August only with a bag and a 4 battery charger ???

i think sony are making a loss.. they now include 10 80min md discs on their top 2 hi-md players (mznh-900/1 BUNDLE ) and five free 80min mds with every other hi-md model

which is good for us ppl who love md's =)

btw, is that included carry pouch the same as the felt bag i got with my mzr-900 ??

nope, the felt bag came with the MD, the bag came with the charger... but for the md not the charger of course ;-)

10 mds in the package! wow... thats nice, I didn't get any! (but bought some maxells for cheap - assume they're ok cause tapes they make are good)

although considering its a hi-md, wouldn't it b nice to get something like 10 * 1Gb tapes. Then I'd say they'd b loosing money

I would say that Sony are still making a profit on their bundle. In HK, the NH1 price converts to about $490 AUD, but in HK it's rare to have sales/discounts, and the only bonus I got when I bought mine was a Hi-MD carry case. It didn't come with a 1GB disc though (which cost $51HK - $AUD 9).
