The "Why We Love MD" Thread

There seems to be a lot going against MD in general in this world. Bad software coupled with old failures and rediculous stricness on Sony's part have all hindered the formats growth as a potential major player.

However even on these boards, where complaints are many, it is obvious that there are a lot of things going for the MD format and its sucessor Hi-MD. Therefore I dedicate this little place of virtual space for those who love MD and use it in various ways to the fullest of its ability as well as those casual music listeners who were initial drawn to the format by the small design, interchangable discs, and with the advent of MDLP 5 hours of music per disc.

Please post why you love MD and what brought you to the format as well as your best experiences and cool things you've done! Show the world that MD is well loved

Why I like MD:

1 - Unbelievable sound quality (SP). I had an iRiver flash mp3 player for a while and now I can't bear to listen to it!

2 - High quality mic/line recording - just perfect for recording band rehearsals, and live gigs (running a line out of the mixing desk)

3- Cool electronic gadget!

4 - See point 1!

MD is such a nice little technology, it succeeds DESPITE Sony...

The battery life on my MZNH700 is actually pretty decent using a 2300MAh NiMH rechargeable (got 4 and a charger as part of the price) - has to be 20+ hours. Basically keeps me going for a whole week of commuting.

In fact I specifically went for a model that took AAs as opposed to the gumsticks. Even if the battery life is not earthshattering it's a 10 second job to plonk a fresh AA into it rather than recharging.

For me the new features of the HiMD outweigh any battery life issues.

That's a good point. I use NIMH AA batteries with all of my portables that use AA. I do get crazy battery life with a gumstick and an AA on my Sony MZ-E710.

Add the slim and small size of the player, even with the AA attachment connected to it, the long battery life, removable media (and cheaper than SD or CF cards), and great sound quality with or without EQ, and you've got a winning combination. My recorders aren't that much bigger either and have all the same benfits.

I don't have an issue with output power - I can give myself a headache listening to my minidisc with no problems!! If it really bothers you then get a headphone amp, the decent ones aren't cheap but you should be able to just about cave your head in at top volume

If it really bothers you then get a headphone amp, the decent ones aren't cheap but ...:

Is there such a thing as a headphone amp that would be about the size of a miniplug ADAPTOR? (like a small plug, rather than a separate BOX to carry around) ???

Back to the original question, why I love MD:

1 - gadget coolness factor

2 - durability of discs

3 - compact size

4 - not as TRENDY as iPod

5 - still enjoy the 'old skool' method of having physical storage items (discs)

I consider myself hopefully devoted to the media. I talk about it to anyone who brings up music in conversations. Reasons I like MD/Hi-MD:

1. The price is always right (when you consider the cost of DAT)

2. The ability to record my favorite bands with fantastic results using simple equipment without any hardware problems yet!

3. Compact size

4. I like having different MDs for different moods of the day

5. Not an IPOD (I was strictly in MD for recording purposes but my MZ-S1 has exposed me to all of the great portable music qualities of the media and I got that on clearance this summer)

I am still hopefully that Sony will get this software thing closer to what we consumers want and demand. Regardless, I think the MD is a hard format to beat for amateur recording AND portable music needs.

1. I gotta admit I was first attracted to md in 2001 when I saw the pretty lights on the Sharp mt877. After I bought it, I realized how convenient it was to have a palm-sized digital player / recorder at my disposal that didn't skip while I walked or rode my bike.

2. I live and work in Japan but am not as fluent in Japanese as I could be, so I often record lectures to listen again at another time.

3. Netmd saved my sanity. I could transfer my cd collection, now stored in a friends house, to an external hard disk and download whatever I wanted to my player in a matter of minutes. If you have ever lived away from your music collection...you know what I mean when I say "saved my sanity".

4. I can trade discks with friends or make copies of songs for co-workers. If I had an ipod I couldn't do this unless I was willing to give up the hard drive.

5. I'm a fan of Sony products, not their support or software but of the products.

6. md is cool.

This is a difficult question to answer, but I do know why I love the format. I believe that the live recording ability of higher end MD and Hi-MD machines is great for the price point, and with the right advice and equipments you can make quality recordings that would even make a DAThead think twice. Is Hi-MD the logical successor to DAT? The line which divides each seems smaller every day. I think that the growth of the format will be fueled by live recording enthusiasts who don't want something extremely portable, semi-functional and not too expensive.

The disk stuff is keen, but as it stands we need higher densities. One gigabyte is much better than what we had before, but 2005 is going to bring higher densitity mp3/etc players and we'll be left out in the cold. Hopefully Sony or another company will release second generation Hi-MD devices that are not compatible with the old MD standard, but this Hi-MD generation and possibly a higher density disk. I doubt that we'll see that until the third generation, however. People seem to really like the concept of disks - it makes the amount of storage you can employ limitless [destroying your wallet in the process], and gives you a better piece of mind with the safety of your music/recordings. I rather have disks that are encased than a portable hard drive.

If someone wanted to employ Hi-MD/MD and only play music would I recommend it? Possibly not. This is a good solution for people who are budget concious, but as the iPod/etc matures and used and older generations go down in price we may lose a considerable amount of people with interest in the format.

There's so many more strengths to the Hi-/MD format that I could discuss, but I don't want to choke this thread. I definitely am much more excited about the direction that MD is going with the Hi-MD format, and Sony seems to actually care. Having this many Sonicstage revisions is really amazing, considering how few they had with Sonicstage 1.

I just hope that they keep working on Sonicstage and make it a better software utility. One can dream, I suppose.

What y'all said.... and -

My new NH1 is everything I wanted from this medium (finally) with the exception of native mp3 support (just for conveniece).. but I can live without it. Now that I can upload my recording to my pc I'm as happy as a pig shaving cream.

Plus what y'all said.

(and with all my refound enthusiasm the NH1 has given me, I picked up the AUX bus for my in dash CD player and now I never use the cd player - just plug in the NH1 remote when I get in the car - the NH1 never even leaves my pocket. I can record one of my band's rehearsals and listen to it as I drive away. THIS IS WHAT I'VE WANTED FOR SO LONG.)

If Sony, by some act of God or stroke of goodwill, ever unleashes the true power of this medium- something they should have done YEARS ago - MD would be UNBEATABLE, period. Take away RMS problems, proprietary software woes etc... then this thread would not even exist - there would be no other contender - NONE)

Cheers and Dag Yo.
