Hi, I have a Sony Hi-MD MZ-NH1, and I mainly use it to record myself playing my musical instrument, which I need clear recordings of. I also obviously use it for listening to music, and I must say, after listening to music on my friends CD Discman, I am amazed at how much better quality songs sound on the MD (this of course could be because headphones, bit rate used....)

My cousins has just bought the latest iRiver - iRiver H340 LCD Colour screen 40GB, and says it is fantastic, and by looking at the specs it sure does look like a wonderful device.

I'd just like to get everyone’s opinions on what they think would be the better unit to use.

Fore more info on the iRiver you can go here - http://www.minidisc.com.au/product_info.ph...4d3a87ed3bee849

I myself, if looking for a unit today, would highly consider the iRiver.

What does everyone else think, and why?

Neither iRiver nor Hi-MD for me. I record not only from CD but also from vinyl and from the radio, and I don't want to be forced to edit the recordings on the computer. Along with the drawbacks of the recording features (see http://forums.minidisc.org/viewtopic.php?p=27695#27695) this rules the iRiver out. If I would switch to Hi-MD my other devices would become useless so I'll stick with MD1. - I'm one of those old-school users which use the MiniDisc still as a cassette tape replacement

Compared to old MD, the iRiver would have been an alternative.

Reason: Most radio shows (classical radio) run in 2 or 4 hour segments.

Not really funny when you have to run two recorders in parallel

and setting the marks at the right place to stitch later...

With Hi-MD, that problem is no more - Just pop in the disc and let it run...

And that means, that the iRiver lost its only advantage for me.

An advantage, that wasn't really there - compressed files are still

limited to 200 MByte, Hi-MD can fill the whole disc.

Plus, MD recorders are still designed for recording, I have doubts,

that the iRiver achieves the same soundquality on recording.

I think in a deathmatch of Hi-MD vs. iRiver, Hi-MD would be victorious. However, then it really becomes a tough choice choosing between the top two Hi-MD models. The MZ-NH1 gives you a clock/timestamp feature, but you can't use AA batteries with it. dry.gif The MZ-NH900 lets you use AA batteries, but no timestamp. wacko.gif Ugh. I agonized over the two for awhile and eventually got the MZ-NH1 for the magnesium body and 'cooler' remote, but I guess in the end when it comes right down to recording, the NH-900 is the champ simply because it gives you the most battery life.

edit: So, my advice, stick with Hi-MD. happy.gif

Good choice. One is made in Japan and another in Malaysia.

Do you really not like Malaysia? sleep.gif Just because something's made there doesn't make it suck. My old Sharp DS8 was made in Malaysia and its build quality was 10x that of the Sony MZ-N10 I had before that, and it was better than the R900 I also had.

Not at all smile.gif

But if I had a choice I would rather go for the more quality option (according to Sony anyway). Every single electronics piece I had from Japan worked for years (and decades) so I like it.
