Hi All,

I'm looking at a new Hi-MD unit and was hoping you guys could point your knowledge my way...

Very simply:

Aside from casing, what is the difference between the sony mz-rh10 & mz-nh1?

I realize the rh10 is a newer model, yet the price for the nh1 is still higher around the world.

Many thanks - Ryan

::sigh:: Let's see here...

MZ-NH1:

-won't directly play MP3s (only Atrac + atrac3plus files)

-has EQ adjustments, and VPT acoustic engine (surround sound modes)

-small screen, limited controls on the deck (w/o remote attached)

-comes with the best damn remote Sony makes

-timestamp feature for Mic/Line In recordings :^)

MZ-RH10:

-will directly play MP3s (still must use SonicStage to transfer)

-EQ, but no surround sound modes

-beautiful OLED screen and full controls on the deck

-will cost less than the NH1

-NO timestamp feature for Mic/Line In recordings >:^(

Eh. Get 'em both if you can. Let us know once you make a decision.

I have an NH1 and am tempted to buy an RH10. The Australian liquidation had me tempted for a while about getting another NH1, but given the problems I (and others) are having with longer-term recordings, I worry about if it's a bug in the units that pretty much renders them useless?

I guess most NH1 users don't see the "randomly turn off after 2-3 hours while recording" problem, but it is big enough for me to almost relegate my NH1 to the "portable player" category. :/

I'm just wondering if it's worth it to return it to Sony to fix or not. It's so random it's hard to describe, unless they know of a batch of defective NH1s and just fix them as they come back...

I haven't seen anything similar being reported with the RH10's.

The screen of the the RH10 is fairly easily scratchable, so it's worth covering with a small square of PDA screen protector. I do that, and the unit has been scratch free for 3 months. Other than that, I'd go for the RH10 (or 910) rather than the NH1 in terms of battery life and options. The NH1 battery is not easily available, and it can't take an external AA attachment. Sound wise I expect they're all pretty similar...

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is that the NH1 has the HD Digital Amp, and the RH10 just the digital amp.

...another thing I thought was unique to the RH10 (910) is the uploading feature. I could be wrong but I thought the new units were the only ones without the uploading restrictions...?

- the multiple uploading restriction is a SS "feature" that has disappeared with SS3.2... this works for 1st gen (including the NH1) and 2nd gen (including the RH10)

- the no-mac-uploading "feature" is a hardware+software issue and can only be negated by using one of the 2nd bis gen (the M-models) which allow PCM-recordings to be transferred to Mac

so actually no difference between the NH1 and RH10 regarding uploading
