I use mostly "true" SP (292 kbps) or Hi-SP (256 kbps). The lowest I ever go now is 132 kbps, and that is only if I have to. I do have one Hi-MD recorded at 64 kbps. It does not get listened to as often as my other discs. The sound quality is okay but once you get used to the higher bit rates it is hard to go back down.

I thought true Hi-SP was 352 KBPS...?

SP mode, the original legacy ATRAC codec (circa 1992), is 292 kbps. 352 kbps was just introduced with SS 3.3. I still use "true" SP mode since I own legacy gear, namely my deck, Aiwa AM-F80, and E80 player. :D

It used to be the case that 64 was WAY better.

however now i am not so sure. Upgrades in SS mean they are about the same: possible with 64 still having the edge because files are smaller

My ears aren't very discerning, so if I tell you that 64kbps sounds ok to me when I'm listening on the move with earbuds, it may not actually mean very much.

However if you visit http://minidisc.amulation.com/hi-md_faq.html you'll see in the answer to question 13 that Sony themselves claim that ATRAC3+ @ 64kbps is roughly equivalent in quality to ATRAC3 @ 132kbps and to (original) ATRAC @ 292kbps.

At the end of the day it's really down to your ears; the environment you're listening in, and the relative importance to you of quantity vs quality.

There's no way that A3+ 64k is up to the standard of A3 132k, Sony are just plain wrong here. I have listened to a lot of 132k and find it very acceptable, I don't know about 105k, I've never listened to it. I don't think you can even rip to it with SS 3.3, can you? 64k is ok if you want to fit loads onto a disc but I couldn't listen to it all the time, the artifacts would drive me crazy after a while.

I agree with you Low Volta, in the end it is the user that has to decide what sounds good to them. I don't mind making SP discs of one album only. It is what works for me. There are those people that want volume instead of quality and who am I to say that is wrong? For me, quality has the upper hand.

thanks, im gonna stick to 132kbps

i think im will ahve to buy aother 1 or 2 discs though (my wallet is getting thinner and thinner)

i suppose the reason i had 64 was the ize of the files.

whatis the file size difference between a 256kbps hi-sp file than a 132kbps atrac3 file?

is it worth me just going fully up to 256 or to stic k at 132?

thanks
