Don't know - "suck it and see" is a common term used in scientific research. Sound like the 3D image is transmitted 90 degrees to the TV. So to sit and watch it you'd have to tilt the TV towards you, as frequently happens in Sports Bars and the like. Are you aware that putting TV over fireplace absolutely voids your warranty? No insurance company will pay up, either. If they manage to find out you did this, your busted TV becomes a rather expensive paperweight.

Thank you! Too bad I cannot trade in either the copy of Sound Forge 9 LE that I paid for, or any of the three(!) copies of SF9LE that subsequently came free with ICD-SX750, ICD-SX950 or PCM-M10, but that's life. I bought it for the ability (hope!) to batch commands that is missing from the LE edition. Of course there's lots of video stuff there too which I mostly rely on NeroVision for, but a couple of times wished for the facilities advertised by Vegas. We shall see.... Stephen

This function is certainly quite obscure.... it won't happen by accident. You literally have to push them at EXACTLY the same time

Is there such a thing as a Flash rom virus? (I know, it's called Windows CE, only joking). Perhaps you have to re-flash the BIOS? I recall the Intel/IBM combination decided that people's wireless adapters needed real authorization, and so plugging in the "wrong" 3rd-party adapter to my thinkpad set off a security breach one time I tried it. So it may be that in wiping out the HD, you have caused the well-known "return-to-manufacturer" disease.

Unfortunately all uploads are impossible at the moment (I have no clue why). Otherwise we'd be happy to put it in the downloads section here.

You cannot use QHiMDTransfer to transfer non-HiMD files. It will be renamed QMDMusicTransfer (or QMusicMDTransfer, I don't remember which), as soon as that functionality is merged into the main program. There is the capability but it exists (for you at any rate) as a bunch of python scripts which are, at best, somewhat cumbersome. Libnetmd has not yet been integrated.

Sony MDS-JE510 (and various models) fix it page
sfbp replied to PhilippeC's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
Jim can comment further; but I have a feeling that the generality of this particular modification has been called into question. Cross reference -
Actually left stop right clear but no matter. Finally...... Thanks

LOL, I can't get it to work, earning me the title of "black thumb" of the year.

Kevin - I wonder what "simultaneously" means? I find that it stops the display as soon as you press "clear" or indeed any other button, as mentioned somewhere in one of the manual you can press any key on remote to achieve the same effect. So you think you can get rid of it for good, or just till the next power on? (I'm trying it out but those 10 minutes' sure add up) Aside from it being annoying, I do find that the demo display can have a use - alerting me to when I left the deck on by accident. Stephen

You'll be looking for a manual in Japanese. Panasonic's common practice (for the other MD models) is to have an English summary around page 27 of the (otherwise unintelligible to all us gaijin) manual. The service manual is on minidisc.org but that's not exactly a huge help, having looked at it. Sergio here (if he reads this) probably has one, since he made a review recently that included some performance by this unit. Good luck.

You can't use the direct output. a. the level is microvolts instead of millivolts b. the (in)famous RIAA equalization curve has to be applied to bring things back to linear from the rather skewed signal actually recorded on gramophone records Both of these things happen in the "phono" section of a decent amplifier. The 980 is very nice but by no means the top banana. It has Type-S but that probably only really makes a big difference with analog output. The 940 is in between yours and mine, and does have some options with wordlength etc. as well as supporting MDLP. There are also some ES models (eg MDS-JA333ES) that are even better, supposedly (I don't have one), and some Pro models which have nifty features like SCMS defeat. That hardly matters once you can upload to a PC using MZ-RH1. Stephen

Except that (of course) there's no MDLP on the 930, that sounds like a reasonable assumption. Yup. Most likely. Or the output format of the Sky box needs to be configured to something the MD understands.....

I recently made a mistake. I decided to ditch my well loved head unit, the Sony CDX-GT510 in favour of a slightly newer one that supports Bluetooth. My old set up consisted of an XM satellite radio (XT-XM1) connected by Sony's proprietary "bus" (or SLink, or Unilink) cable to the back of the head unit. In addition, plugged into the *input* port of the sat radio is my MD changer, the MDX-66XLP, the first and last MDLP changer from Sony (or anyone). The head unit worked both of these devices by simple selector controls on the '510. I could read titles on the 6 MD's, titles of the stations from the satellite, and everything in the garden was wonderful. In addition, the head unit played back, as well as ordinary CD's, data cd's containing MP3, WMA, AAC and (most importantly to me) ATRAC, including ATRAC3+. In addition I had plugged into the cigarette lighter, the Parrot PMK5800 Bluetooth device which is capable of broadcasting on FM, receiving with a microphone, and generally managing calls on a mobile cell phone that sits in my pocket. As handy as the Parrot is, I found that it was fine for receiving calls, but a bit iffy for making them. It relies on voice recognition, and I would repeatedly find that I could record someone's name, have it recognised, and then later the poor Parrot would say "Name not recognised", probably owing to some subtle change in my pronunciation. There was the minor hassle of having to switch to the right Tuner frequency when receiving or making a call, but that was OK. Along comes the MEX-BT5100 (actually Sony built the MEX-BT5000 around the same time as the CDX-GT510, namely 2006, and the 5100 is supposedly an upgrade of the 5000). All the features I know and love, with 50 stored contacts for Bluetooth (sure, 100 would be nicer, but you take what you can get). No more voice recognition. I couldn't afford one when they were actually being sold, so I waited for an affordable one second-hand. Big mistake. It doesn't work, at least the one I purchased. Time to call Sony. Here's the problem - song titles do not work properly, compared to the CDX-GT510. The problem is mainly for the external units (Satellite and MD changer) but there is an obvious problem in the CD player too. Here's my summary of the current situation: 1. The playback works fine, and I can change Sat stations by number. 2. Titles on some tracks work ok (always the same tracks) 3. Some titles on MD are blank (about 60% or more, always the same tracks) 4. Satellite has no titles whatever.. effectively useless for finding an interesting channel. 5. CD song titles cut off dead at 24 characters, although scrolling works (the display has 14 available positions). 6. Some titles scroll, even MD titles (Sony later claimed the problem is limited to scrolling). 7. MD disk/group info is unparsed - shows as 0;//1-5 GroupName// etc. So one sees the "raw" group information instead of the proper title for most disks. On some disks (short title and/or few groups) the title displays perfectly. However on that correctly-parsed disk, there are still lots of blank titles (where there should be proper titles on every track). Sony's first claim (call to Sony Canada in Toronto) is that this model simply doesn't support XT-XM1 (their only satellite radio) or MDX-66XLP (their last MD changer). They based their response on the specifications in the user manual. Odd, though - the CDX-GT510 doesn't list the satellite or minidisc, and yet both work perfectly. It was designed at the same time as the MEX-BT5000 (the 5100 is apparently identical). I had a rough month with Sony. My new PCM-M10 recorder failed right out of the box (no USB connectivity whatever) and had to be replaced. In the course of dealing with that (purchased from USA, it doesn't seem to be available in Canada) I ended up talking to a splendid gentleman in San Diego (via Philippines, and El Salvador, but no matter) who promised to see if he could reproduce the problem. He said that he had a CD head unit from about 2002, so he needed to get his hands on a 2006 or later Bluetooth unit, and an MD changer (between us we figured the sat and MD were suffering from approximately the same problem). By the time he called back 3 days later, he had obviously been told to say that "sorry, your units are too old, we cannot support any of this". Whilst I appreciate that support is a cost centre for a big company like Sony, it is their support which makes me like their products. That, and the excellent engineering. To date, with this MEX-BT5100, I have had neither. We know that the CDX-GT510 (2006) works all the above setup perfectly. I am limited by choice of head unit to one that plays ATRAC, and it seems that the 5000/5100 are the only one that do so at the same time as having Bluetooth (hands free) support for my phone built in. Perhaps there's another model I don't know about? I'm curious to know WHY Sony suddenly made a unit that was incompatible with all their earlier technology. Or, as seems more likely to me, that they don't want to fix the bugs in their firmware. Does anyone reading this have one of these units? What hardware have you attempted to connect to the BUS (Slink, Unilink) connector? Does it operate the same way as this? I would happily write off this particular unit to bad luck if I knew that buying another one would simply solve the problem. Is Sony unwilling to fix compatibility with a whole range of units that predate its latest offering? How many more recent SLink/Unilink units also fail to work the changers properly? Perhaps there is some good technical reason for this (e.g. support of MP3 CD titles). If so, I have yet to hear from Sony's Tier 2 technical support (that is, 2 levels up from the person one speaks to initially) what that reason might be. Stephen

The "enable ATRAC" seems to me to be about authenticating the PS3 device. I don't see why it should need to as they could easily have given it keys, just as every AtracCD player has. Anyway this is an "angels-on-the-head-of-a-pin" argument. Please give it a shot. If it works, I may well honour Sony with a little more business sometime soon before they abolish that feature. I bet you're right, though.. i probably read the page too quickly. Curious if that PC file is totally locked, or can be read by the newest linux-minidisc code. Cheers Stephen

I want to bring up something. Please can y'all look at this URL: http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/cdimport.html Seems to me that this means the PS3 can import Atrac CD's. Has anyone with a playstation actually tried it? I know I gave an Atrac CD to a friend and he said the disk doesn't actually play (but maybe he hadn't done the enable). But it looks like at least one can IMPORT them from the PS3's drive. Amazing, if so.

Once you said that BOTH md gear were failing, I knew the problem had to be at the other end. Sorry I was not more familiar with PS3, it sounds like a versatile box (but then, so is a PC). Stephen

You'll have to go through aligning the drive. If you are experienced enough to get into service mode, you can try fixing the byte at 024 (to FF). Try reading this thread: However, it's possible you have to reload the NV data. There's an application you should use - called NV Patchwriter. However I don't have it for N505.
-
And when exactly did you do the PS3 update? Sorry to belabour the point. The other thing I don't understand is this: the socket on the PS3 is a square one? TIme for me to learn something about the PS3 - have you reviewed (online on in the manual) the contents of this page? http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/audiooutput.html
-
This behaviour will, in my experience, never be due to a dirty lens.
-
Is the red light visible in the socket of the PS3 or the BluRay player? Have you updated the PS3's firmware since that initial recording? If you did it (the recording) a while back (as opposed to immediately before this) it's eminently possible that Sony decided to make the signal copy-protected in the meantime.
-
When you change the input level on the 640 (and I assume the 440 looks about the same) it always says Opt(1?) +0.5 dB or whatever. If it was a line recording it would say Anlg +0.0dB. I just checked the menus. I believe your UK model may have Coax input too, so it may not say Opt1, but just Opt. Whoops, the 440 has a different display. But the same thing applies. I suggest you focus efforts on the CD end of the connection.

If it worked once, it should work twice. Unless you convinced yourself it was working at the start when in fact it was not. Is that possible?
-
OK so now you have a situation where TWO MD units refused to record optical signals, when one of them already did it. Clearly both recorders didn't die on the same day. Slow down, take a deep breath, and try to isolate the problem. Optical recording works! So figure out what is wrong with the source of the signal.
-
Was the this same one that originally worked? I'm confused a bit by your description, sorry.
