  1. The only disadvantage of standalone DAC is that by the time the signal has been converted to optical, you already lost its 24-bitness. So certain MD decks will BEAT an external DAC. But the 640 + external DAC (as noted higher up) beats the 640's own D->A. I'm curious, what was the mod to your 640 that you show in your signature?
  2. It's M-Crew+PCLink, of course, but the answer is yes. But there's no such functionality on the JB980, sadly. For JB940, yes. You've got me curious, though. As far as I can tell the circuitry to enable PCLink is there on the JE640. But I am pretty sure that I tried it, and it doesn't work. Odd, because it (640) does have Control-A1 functionality, which does most of the same things and is (also) connected to the I2C data/clk lines.
  3. What exactly happened with the 052? Probably it (the modified one) never got installed, somehow. Probably you have to get rid of all previous driver installs. I assume you had a copy of 052.cat and 052.SYS also installed for your RH1....? If you tell us the PID, we can modify the setup files for 32 bit (052) and 64 bit (760) so that someone else coming along can have a ready made solution.
  4. Could be power supply even. Specifically the power to the VBus (USB).
  5. Trust me, don't modify 033. Much better to modify 052 because it will work with ALL minidiscs. But let us know how you get on. You can find the PID in device manager, of course.
  6. Not without the tools. Jim'll fix it, I am sure.
  7. I recently purchased a second-hand CD/MD deck, the MXD-D40. This deck tends to be in the shadow of the later MXD-D400, mainly because of the lack of Optical Out and also the fact that it is Type-R. The MXD-D400 is the last Sony combo deck, and has Type-S as well as Optical out, and can play MP3 CD's (though *not* Atrac CD's, more's the pity). However, the D40 has one important feature that never made it into the later deck, namely the ability to control from PC via a PS/2 keyboard cable which is the output of the PCLink USB box. This allows one to record and edit MDs from the comfort of the computer (using M-Crew); although upload to the PC is not possible, this is not the end of the world. The RH1 is great for uploading edited disks, but don't try and use any portable for editing titles (and SonicStage is hopeless for actual editing of tracks, they have to be uploaded to MD, and the editor is almost impossible to use). I actually purchased this deck as a backup for my marvellous CMT-PX3 (sometimes known as DHC-MD595, but even the manuals calling it that, clearly show the "PX3" designation on the front). Why? Because the drive in the D40 is the same exact one used by the PX3, and these are relatively unusual - different because, I suppose, they have that extra logic to allow the external control from the PC. Either way (swapping drives, or decks) I have a second deck on which I can do easy editing from the PC. So if one could add Optical out to the D40 (somewhere else I already noted that the JE640, which is Type-R actually sounds quite good with its optical out into an external DAC or amplifier - ie. the Type-S has more to do with the D->A conversion than with any special coding on or off the disk), life might be very good indeed. The D40 is actually quite a bit more available and cheaper than the D400 for the reasons noted above. This is something of a work in progress - I am not ready to share pictures until the optical socket has been properly mounted, and the wiring tidied up a bit. But it's incredibly simple - you hook the optical out to the output of the MD ("BD board") before it goes to the D->A converter. The only small catch is that if you want to play CD's through optical out you either have to mount a second optical out, or put the MD section into "REC" mode where it acts as a pass-through of digital signal. I elected to do the latter, naturally, since none of the later decks have the JE510's well known problem of always turning once record is pressed. So far so good. I will post an update in due course. But I thought the addicts afficionados here might want to hear about this. Stephen
  8. You need to know the PID (easy for a guy like you) and then you can modify NETMD052.INF, I think Stephen
  9. The 4.3 from our downloads section? Question: are you by any remote chance trying to install or reinstall something on a machine with no (or blocked) internet connection? Stephen PS - Atrac Advanced Lossless has NO encryption. Ever.
  10. Simple Burner should work, too.
  11. Overwrite head is bust. You should be able to get something as good or better on Ebay for less than the cost of fixing.
  12. 'sfunny, I thought I could see the right hand casing (black) which is the wall of the deck. You think it's a shadow? Like this has been sitting at the BOTTOM of a stack.
  13. Is this one just plain weird? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Silver-Sony-MiniDisc-Stacker-Player-/160653369908 It it me, or has someone bent this entirely out of shape?
  14. I'm sorry, there appear to be some problems with the latest set of skins that arrived with the newest release of the IPS board software. We're actively looking into this, thanks for your patience. I believe the problems are not specific to anything that you are doing.
  15. Something very badly wrong with links..... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim%27ll_Fix_It
  16. Amen to that! I think his middle name really is Savile.
  17. If you can lay hands on the MDX-CA790X this probably has the best sound as it is Type-S, and the ONLY one to be made.
  18. Amazing unit!! I have never heard of it. Everyone see the "MDLP" marking on the lower right front? I assume you need NetMD driver for it. You are going to have to find out the PID by some sort of delving into the USB subsystem. It's buried there. Armed with this info you can try modifying the NETMD052.INF file to cope with it. Here's my thread...... If you are technical enough to find out the PID, I can and will help.
  19. The first link I gave does ship, but definitely there is a charge for shipping. The company with 3000+ does NOT ship abroad, at all.
  20. try putting this number in: 170598118550 And then save the item in your watch list. You should see 3343 if you do it before the next time they sell one. It looks like they started with 4000 10-packs.
  21. There are lots of the latter currently on brand new sale. eg. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TDK-MD80-blank-minidisc-10-pack-80-minute-mini-disc-/290562407913 I have bought from this guy and charges for postage are reasonable. There's another seller (UK only in theory) that admitted to having over 3000 of these 10-packs. I really like the colour variations in this set, it's probably my favourite.
  22. Maybe the old one is still cached someplace. Such things are possible in a highly-optimized system like W7. Also when you download things, do you extract the files to a directory on C:\ or do you leave them where they are? Maybe there's some problem with paths, and/or old copies in the temporary directory which will get used if you try to run them straight from a downloaded zip folder. Do you have any "speed-up" software installed?
  23. Did you successfully install any OTHER md devices on this machine, or was this the only one? Did you upgrade this machine from XP Win32? In either case something in the registry may be stopping you if information got copied or altered. If there's a hardware problem, nothing left I can do except suggest you plug into a different USB connector. This stuff works. Are you certain it didn't tell you at some point that it had installed a NetMD driver? If so you needed to do the previous suggestion about removing drivers WITH THE N910 NOT CONNECTED. You need to be sure that there is NO sign of any NetMD, active or not, in this machine. You may even have to find every oem.inf where the drivers get copied to (in XP this is Windows\inf, a hidden directory) and go through every single one making sure there are no entries for NetMD. Also you need to go through the registry looking for the pattern USB\VID_054C&PID_00C7 . You'll have to tell exactly everything you find there. (those three 0's are all numbers, not the letter "O"). Stephen
  24. if typing "ffplay" at the command prompt does nothing, then something is seriously wrong. I have no clue what - but this was the way that the original code posted in this thread behaved, for me. The second version, which you should have, didn't do this for me, making me think you may have mixed up the versions.
