  1. I agree. Great to see people joining up.
  2. Very nice. Any of you chaps want to meet up in Melbourne? Catch you up for a coffee, bring a portable along?
  3. I recently lost my MZ NH 700. Slightly upsetting actually, since it's been in constant use since new. I'm a heavy MD user, and this was my only portable for years. I'd say I have used every function on it over the years, and it travelled the world with me, so versatile these little units. I have since found another MZ NH 700 to replace it (3 actually), but loosing it made me reflect on what a great little unit it is. I can honestly say it never failed in anything it was tasked with in all those years. It was becoming a little battle scarred, with some wear on the sides of the front plate, I put this down mainly to years of rubbing against the zipper opening on the grey Hi MD pouch it came with. The rubber cover over the USB connector was coming a bit loose, eventually I think this was going to break off, I also noticed the MD discs would have to be firmly pressed in while closing the lid, unlike my "new" one. It would have been interesting to see how long it would have run before a major failure, guess I'll have to wait another 8 years til my "new" one has the same mileage.
  4. Hi guys I wonder if this sole remaining MD only deck is still in production?
  5. Thanks. Possibly over my budget. I've since picked up a used one.
  6. Recording with a mic - concerts, sometimes lectures or presentations. Other uses - record FM or Digital radio programs to listen to on the way to/from work (on the train), a large collection of CD rips, a smaller collection of 'mix tapes', plus some MD's that are transfers from old cassette tapes, these being mainly bootleg concerts or odd things I recorded with a 'Micro casette' recorder, many years ago. MD, use it everyday.
  7. Thanks for posting this, had a play with it today, will be handy.
  8. Anyone know where you can get a Sony MZ-RH1 "new"?
  9. Killed this one off didn't i...
  10. Thanks for posting those. Some of them were very good, and all interesting.
  11. Hi, I see this list of features is for an audio software that utilizes the TMS320DA708 chip. My reading here is that if you want to use this software/chip combination to encode into ATRAC3plus, it's available. I'm unsure that this has a special significance when the chip is part of an AV. I'm sure we are way off topic though here.
  12. I'm fine with people having alternate views to me, always healthy to explore ideas together. For me an MD copy (in SP or less) cannot have the same 'quality' as the CD source it originated from. Sony talk about 'CD like', and 'close to CD quality', I note. I accept the sound on an MD may be 'different, and 'different' can be said by individuals to 'sound better', as that's always subjective. Copying an analogue source (like an LP) onto an MD is a different matter. I think i'll pass on commenting on that one. I had a bit of a look at the information available online regarding the Onkyo TX-SR605. I'm unable to satisfy myself that it is upsampling audio to 192kHz. Very happy to pointed in the right direction on this though. Thanks Interesting topic.
  13. Do you have the model number? As clever as it might be, and as much as I am a MD fan, I doubt a MD will sound better than the original source CD. I do agree upsampling and downsampling, followed by upsampling would have a negative impact on the data.
  14. I agree here. You have your own media now and can play it anytime you like, if you are accessing a cloud service you have to pay to upload it and also stream it back to you when you want to play it, so a new cost appears to listen to your own music. What happens if there is a technical issue and the cloud server is not available? What is the bit rate of the music you stream back to play? Is the quality the same? I'm not sure there are big advantages for me. I like to own my own music and play it when I like and not rely on an outside service like that. Are my thoughts on the matter.
  15. I would Phillipe but when I try I get the following message "The member PhilippeC cannot receive any new messages". Is your in box full?
  16. I'd agree that if the optical output of an MD deck is 44.1/16bit, whereas the MD itself is 44.1/24bit, then you are loosing some bit depth from the MD, to then upsample it again in an external DAC to 192/24bit sounds like a less than ideal arrangement. I guess the thing also is that a lot of MD recordings are going to be copies of CD's, so the original material was only ever 44.1/16bit, recorded and presumably "upsampled" itself during recording to 24bit. The other thing to ponder, is the extra 8bits of depth highly significant when compared to the huge loss of bit rate when comparing a CD to an MD (CD = 1,411.2 kbit/s vs MD (Stereo Play) = 292kbit/s). Having said that, the JE640 does sound good outputted to the external DAC, then again, the JE640 sounds pretty good to me on it's own.
  17. I don't know the specifics of your AV Receiver, but normally if an AV is capable of 192kHz, it means that it is capable of converting 192kHz digital to analogue. I'd say then it's not 'upsampling' anything.
  18. Hi Phillipe, Looks like these uploads failed. Could you contact me via the 'Messenger'? Thanks
  19. Hi sfpb, My 640 came out of a sound studio and has had 2 modifications. 1. Fitted with a rack mounting kit. 2. of more interest, fitted with a pair each (L & R) of TRS Jacks, these are fitted to the rear panel right hand side. Other than that it's OOTB, and runs well. I'm going to run an digital optical out to a Cambridge Audio 'DAC Magic' for upsampling to 24bit/192Khz.. That 'should' improve sound quality.
