ES or JB decks has better AD / DA converters, some digital filters/oversampling on digital output and better assembling quality (PCB paths, shields, etc...) resulting in better SNR ratio, THD, dynamic and analog sound restitution overall. Same between cheap and high-end CD players sounding differences. In digital recording I think that a JE520 record as the same a JB920 (compare with same ATRAC version, 4.5 both). As said a JE480 will record digital signal to same as JB980, but in analog not. For the prerecorded MD's ATRAC version, i never seen a mention specified somewhere about the codec version used for mastering. But It's a non-sense if they don't used latest developed ATRAC versions at each time. Why newers only suitable for customers machines grade ? If you look at Sony MDS-B or MDS-E pro devices series it has been from ATRAC 1 to Type-R. Like MDietrich said it can be simply a different mastering (from CD) arranged to "cheat" with some ATRAC sound alterations.

To answer zokuchou, JE470 and JB980 BD boards seems to be pin compatibles. But without warranty due to possible software errors or bad behaviour.

But since MDM-3, MBU does not exist (individually) anymore. So just labeled MDM-Xyyy for the WHOLE MECHANISM BLOCK (BASE UNIT INCLUDED). As I have understood, you can swap complete transport block safely only if it's the same reference. Think twice about. At the beginning of MD, we had to distinguish two things : MDM-Xyyy (X = 1 to 7) refer only to a MD THREADING/LOADING MECHANISM MBU-Xzzz refer to a BASE UNIT (reading unit) = combination of three elements : base chassis (metal plate / sled & spindle motors) + OPU model/revision + BD BOARD model and version since MDM-2 to 7 labeled like (example) "1-234-567-AB" or like "A-1234-567-B") Of course MBU-X units can be mounted only on same MDM-X mechanism. Just an example with MDS-B3 et MDS-B4P (service manual) : Here we have 2 MDM models and 2 MBU models for each device according to if record function possible or not = overwrite head installed or not.

I think bying some TDK CLEF packs en eBay soon. Here in France Sony 5MD pack is almost 20 euros, TDK CLEF 10MD pack is around 13-15 euros. Go figure. But I wonder if each MD is individually packaged ?

Sell it for spares on eBay... You can help other someone to repair its. IMO you have a problem with main µP or front panel (like if keys are pressed...). Check flat cables, bad soldering, maybe a crazy IR receiver and ground problem first. Let the transformer alone.

After, try to understand why it is blocked and making this "whirring noise" with pages 15-16-17-18 --> So check for belts or broken plastic gears --> Check switchs on "POSITION SWITCH" and "OUT" small boards. First, fix the tray, after we will see.

So there is a mechanical problem somewhere that is detected by the system controler. Your command "SWITCH OFF" is queued but before he is waiting for something that didn't arrive... The C13 error is because the disc inserted can't be read. This make me say that your optical block is stuck. Maybe the deck is waiting for park it when power off ? (I don't know this unit) If the problem were be the tray, the deck never try to read your disc... so the tray is fully closed at this time for the deck. - Check belts - Check connections --> Sometimes unplug-replug white flat flex-cables can help !!! - Make the OPU move in service mode... - Dephased mecha, broken gear or bad switch somewhere... Maybe many faults...

Discs can't be read. Bad optical pickup unit, not well connected OPU ribbon cable, dirt on lens. Maybe an ESD damage too. Whatever, the OWH is not needed to read the disc. Installed or not, connected or not. Unplug them and replug them. Google traduction may help ?

The MDS-JE510 has MDM-3A/3B mecha (shared by MDS-S37/38/39, etc...) , Yes it's a bad "full metal" mechanism !
