The radio remote is working great, but it sees only part-time action out there, as I don't listen too much to radio, except when I go to a (Seattle Mariners) ball game a Safeco Field just to listen to the play-by-play (with Dave Niehaus, Rick Rizzs and Dave Sims) of all the action as well as pick up vital stats such as lifetime BA vs. a certain pitcher, etc., or the occasional afternoon matinee game that may happen during my work time, so it is always great to have it around in case you do go on the road or to a sporting event where in-stadium/arena play-by-play is available, so thanks for the remote, it is cool of ya to do that, knowing that the NH700/NHF800 are sister units with that exclusive remote/phones jack.

I seem to have an issue with the jog dial on my Canadian NZ-NH700 I bought brand new NIP on eBay back 3 years ago, and I just wondered if Sony (for a fee) will fix it for me despite it being a Canadian-market unit? I also own a NIP NH600D, aa well as a second Canadian NH700 (coming soon on eBay) and a NIP Australian-market NH700 I picked up at MiniDisc Access back in May 2007, and a couple of RH710 units from Europe (one used, one NIP). Will they repair out-of-U.S.-market units? P.S.: I DO also use the 40ELK on my NH700 but every once in a while I would like to use the jog dial on the unit itself, such as in a home-based situation, such as when it's hooked uo to my hi-fi, when I am not on the road. Yes, I also own an RH1 that I use exclusively as an uploader/downloader and to upload legacy discs to the PC.

I am more than aware about their delicate build, having read all the crap said by Amazon.com reviewers about their breakage (you notice they don'teven bother to review their SQ), that's why you should treat them with kid gloves. They were definitly not meant for use at an industrial or construction work site even during lunch break, so ts speak. that is the job of either bundle units or at best some EX71SL's (not my good 90SL's that's for sure). As for the MDR-D777LP, the long cord (non-Japan, JE) version of these units, I hate to say it, but that's why I prefer SL and SP (and other JE, Japan Edition) versions of cans and IEM's, it is for the shorter cord, and money is no object when it comes to the matter of convenience, especially if you own a remote-controlled unit such as most of our MD/Hi-MD units. That is also why I ordered a JE Version of the MDR-NC60 NC cans as well, for its two cords (0,5m and 1.5m cords) that are included with it, as my old U.S.-bought MDR-NC50 (and my now-modified U.S. NC6 NC cans, before having fit a 0.5m cord off a bad pair of EX71SL's and keeping the extension from them) had only a 1.5m cord and was too long for its intended purpose.
-
I am aware that they are 24 ohms, so I turned up the volume from 17/30 (for my 16 ohm EX90SLs) to 20/30, and they are pretty fat in the 250 Hz-1 kHz frequency range and I had to cut the 250 Hz band on my NH700 down to -9 dB to accomodate for that. (Thank God for 2 custom EQ settings on my NH700! Now I have one for my IEMs and one for my cans!) Now the big adventure will be when I get my new NC60's (JE Version, the ones with the 0.5m cord) as they are 40 ohms (with NC on), maybe I might have top either put it at 25/30, or buy a Boostaroo Revolution or Penguin Amp to accomodate for it, and yes, I prefer the replaceable "AA (A)(A)" or 9 volt battery convenience of them.

I'll admit that since getting my MZ-NH700 (one of now-three of them that I own), I have become a bit of a sampler, but, when I play my MDs either at home or in the car on my legacy decks, I am indeed more of a listener, it's just so hard to pick any one of an average than 30 CDs recorded on a 1GB Hi-MD without surfing through them all.

I just got the D777SL's in today and from the first sound impression (after a little tweaking of the onboard EQ) I like what I hear.... full pictorial and review on these later on in the week, when I have enough time to actually fully test them out. The build on them looks a bit delicate but when you pay $150.00 USD for them straight outta Japan (from Jun Ibaraki and the fine folks at "buyfromjapan" on eBay) you almost should treat them with kid gloves. They were never intended to be used in industrial environments like my job at the Jefferson Recycling Center I will sure as hell guarantee you that. That is what the cheaper phones are for, such as the bundle units (or the EX71SL's, so to speak) that come with your Walkman. I know that I should also test them a flat EQ settings as well, as Guitarfxr suggested I do on my next and on all further pipe/can reviews, and that I will, including tests on many different units, and not just my MZ-NH700. Thanks, Ray Jackson

My current favorite "go-to" unit, the HH700 has that same issue, the jog wheel crapped out on me about last year, that is why I now use the 40ELK exclusively as my controller on the NH700. I hope we could simply send it in to Sony to get fixed, there is a Sony repair shop here in nSeattle on S. Fidalgo Way.

How can I recover data from a mini disc that won't play?
BIGHMW replied to madeofsteel's topic in Minidisc
My RH1 works pretty good (so far when hooked up to my Belkin USB 2.0 hub, I just wonder if this issue is exclusively related to his NH600 and not to the entire Hi-MD family. P.S.: I have yet to lupload/download up any files other than music with my RH1, but If just wonmdered if they issues will arise if and when I do. Thanks. -
Onkyo UD-5 USB to Optical Adapor, 5.1 Digital sound from your PC!
BIGHMW replied to jernikfra's topic in Classifieds
This may (?) be perfect for Hi-MD>Hi-MD or MD>MD duplication if you want to go that far. Just hook up your RH1 (or other Hi-MD equivalent) to the USB and put this in between and end it with another Hi-MD Walkman (or Hi-MD deck for you Onkyo MD-105FX/133 owners) and voila!.... perfect digital>digital copies of you Hi-MDs without either that crappy DRM or SCMS! Just looked on eBay... "no can find" there dude, is it available here in the States, and if so, where? Or, does Onkyo have its own store where we can get planty of them? My Visa card and PayPal account await!!! Thanks, Ray Jackson -
Thanks A440! That makes my MZ-NH700 more usable as a live recorder rather than just a mere player I tried just one other time to record a live show using the NH700 as a live field recorder when I recorded segments of a live show here in Port Townsend and it came out over distorted and worthless, so I will indeed pick up this pre-amp, as it makes my ECM-MS907 better than ever. Thanks goodness for the MDCF, in fact I have learned so much more about my MD/Hi-MD recording units and how to use them right rather than the old "bat out of hell" approach to recording live shows, with this I will be able to use all of my units at any time, not just the NH700 So this leaves me (at least myself) with but one question: having read horror stories from users on this forum about using the RM-MC40ELK while recording live shows ("buzzing" noise, distortion, etc.), would it be wise to just use the comtrols on my unit instead of the 40ELK, or should I carry one wth me in my recording gear in case I need it? Thanks, Ray Jackson

How can I recover data from a mini disc that won't play?
BIGHMW replied to madeofsteel's topic in Minidisc
I just wondered what Hi-MD unit he is using for the data drive, perhaps it is a (I assume) first-generation unit (MZ-NH600/NH600D/NH700/NHF800/NH900/NH1/NH3D). I use an RH1 myself for all of my uploading/downloading of music and also as a USB storage drive, so I may think that it is a kind of "generation gap" or maybe a firmware issue, I don't know, but I assume it may be it. I also have some NH700 and RH710 units that are used exclusively as players while on the road, mostly for their internal "AA" battery capacity. As for my RH1, it is permanently stationed here in my home office, as a successor to my Zip 250 drive, which is now exclusively used (but is still stationed here in the office) to edit my music I record on my Boss BR-8 Zip 100 multitrack recorder in my home studio, HMW Studio One. Perhaps if madeofsteel gives out his unit model number, maybe A440 can give more help on it. Thanks, currently bidding on another MZ-NH700 (from Canada) on eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...A:IT&ih=010 Ray Jackson. -
My management, Len Enders http://www.myspace.com/dedenderz of Label Cove Entertainment (were you expecting my former high school classmate from Erikson Center http://www.sfvcmhc.org/html/erickson_center.html in 1983-84 and current hero, supermodel Cindy Margolis?), was the first in my area to get one of the MD Bundles (MDS-JE510 deck and an MZ-E40 Walkman) back ion 1998, and because of its overwhelming capabilities I got an MZ-R50, as I needed an alternative to the cassette and my old D-121 Discman which shook and skipped like hell, and I have been hooked on MD through MDLP, NetMD and now Hi-MD and currently own an MZ-E33, 2 NH700s, 2 RH710s and an RH1, as well as 2 MDX-C5970 car decks and MDX-65 changers, and also my MDS-JE520, MDS-JE480, and MXD-D3 decks as well as an MDS-E10 Pro deck which currently is stationed in my home studio, HMW Studio One. "Where respect is earned, History is made, and Legendary status is reached on an everyday basis". That's how I got into it, I will never give up the idea of having either MD or Hi-MD as part of my life, like I say.... ATRAC or DEATH!!! F*** iPods!!!

At your suggestion, I just got the NC60 JE Version (Japan Edition, I myself prefer SL/SP and JE version units because of the shorter cord) on eBay (I paid $200 bucks for them, as they include a Japan Edition-exclusive remote-friendly 0.5m cord along with the rest of the standard gear of course), and I will be doing a thorough MDCF/ALC-exclusive review as soon as these guys and the D777SLs come in next week via EMS Speedpost. I will be testing both cans with many different units, so I will get more of an idea of how they sound (remember units vary by wattage and frequency response/sensitivity). Also, I will be blowing out all of my other headphones and remotes (mostly factory stock, bundle, OEM) pretty soon, so watch for them in the Classifieds section of both forums. Then I will just have (for remotes) the RM-MC40ELK, RM-MZ33 (for the newly-acquired MZ-E33, which came wioth my newly-acquired MDS-JE520 deck), and RM-MC55ELK and for phones just the N.U.D.E EX IEM's, the Altus (Eggo) HD Series, and V-Series Stiudio Monitor cans.

I will find out, one way or the other, when I get them in this coming week or next, I think your issue may be with your EQ settings on your unit, also, the NC60 units only have 102 dB and an high impedence of 40 ohms in active mode (100 dB and 100 ohms in passive mode), and having owned (and resold) the MDR-NC50 headphones I dont want to put up with having to buy an external headphone amp just to drive them with my MZ-NH700. I would rather that my unit (5 mW + 5 mW) drive a set of cans or IEM's rather than get a Boostaroo or similar to do it for me. The purchase wasn't just made on looks, which are cool, and a blend of polished chrome and brushed silver aluminum, and are similar to my MDR-EX90SL IEM's and MDR-NC22 IEM's, they were mostly based on stats like a loud 106dB at only a measly 24 ohms, and a huge frequency response ratio beyond that of even human hearing (8 Hz-80 KHz) and are meant to replace my subpar MDR-NC6 cans, which while they too were 106 dB at only 20 ohms (in active mode), the mid range was too fat for me, and the bass and midrange drowned out the highs. I am the kind of guy who like to hear the whole spectrum of a recording, no matter what genre, and just let the EQ take over in shaping the sound to being just right.

bump. I just bought a pair of the MDR-D777SL units from Jun Ibraki and the good folks over at "buyfromjapan" on eBay, and I will be featuring an MDCF/ALC-exclusive review and pictorial of these babies next week as soon as they come in from Japan, so stay tuned!

Well, I guess I may qualify as one of the "sick" ones, as I do own backups of my MZ-NH700 Silver, D-NE700 Silver, and MZ-RH710 Black, and also have plans to have a backup MZ-RH1 (or at least the M200) soon.

WOW!!! My bus, dubbed PimpWagen (a.k.a. The "V-DUB P-DUB") has (and has had since I bought it back in 2002 for a measly $1200) a 50-horsepower 1600cc dual-port engine taken out of a 1971 VW bay-window Bus (the original engine was a 42 hp, 1500cc single-port motor) and that is plenty fast already, except on slight upgrades (uphill) when I have a full load of groceries on the way back from Costco down in Silverdale, 40 miles away from BIGHMW.com Headquarters (our home) here in Port Townsend, Washington With the suspect standard obsolete drum-based hydrulic braking system, a Porsche 914/914S-based engine woiuld be too much for me, as I am so used to the 1600 that is in there. 0-to-60 in 3 days is a-ok with me, unless you drive one of those annoying large SUV's whose drivers think they rule the road and want to tailgate us in order to run us off the road.
-
Both of my rides, my 1999 Volkswagen New Beetle GLS 2.0 and my project 1963 Volkswagen Transporter Kombi (and a split-window bus at that!) have Sony MDX-C5970 HU's, and MDX-65 6-MD changers in each, and coming soon, I will be adding the Connects 2 ASONWHD001 Walkman adapter ineach for use with my MZ-NH700 Hi-MD Walkman as well, so I am a hardcore tried-and-true MD/Hi-MD user, yes folks, even in this day and age of MP3/HDD/iPod players where everyone (including Cindy Margolis, unfortunately) seems to have been brainwashed into thinking that their Apple/iRiver/Zune is better than my/our good-old MD/Hi-MD units from the "old days", but I just have one thing I would like to say to all of them...... "ATRAC OR DEATH!!!"

A Happy 42nd Birthday goes out to my hero and sole role model in the entertainment business, and my former high school classmate/co-Class Of 1984 graduate from Erikson Center, none other than.... Cindy Margolis. Have many more happy years to come, C-Meister, from all of us here at MiniDisc.org and the MDCF!!! with love & peace, your former co-graduate from 1984, Ray Jackson. MDCF User ID: BIGHMW P.S.: now if only we could get her into MiniDisc and Hi-MD.

UPDATE: I just downloaded a .pdf of the MZ-NHF800 manual.... problem solved and remote progammed!!! I am now more than ready to go to a Mariners ball game at Safeco Field next year, hopefully the Mariners will have an even better year than this (they improved drastically from last year's dismal record)., I know manager John McLaren will make sure of that! Thanks to both sector001 for the RM-MC39LT remote and to Ishi and Chris at MiniDisc.org for having the .pdf available (I googled it!)
-
I really enjoy the fact that I can use my newly-acquired (thanks to sector001) RM-MC39LT Hi-MD remote to listen to AM, FM, TV, and weather bands on my MZ-NH700. But upon further toying with it, I discovered that you can actually program preset stations on it, as I seemed to notice somehow when holding down the ENTER button, at that least half of it allows me to possibly program my favorite stations on it, but how do I get them entered into the remote memory so that from then on all I have to do is go through the presets rather than go "up-and-down the dial"? If there are any others who own this great remote, as originally included with the MZ-NHF800 and is also fully-compatible with the NH700 as well, please give me some much-needed advice or something along (technical) that same line so I can completely program my faves on it and fully enjoy it. Thanks, Ray Jackson

Santana- Santana (1969), followed by A custom-made 79+ minute MD super-compilation of Neil Young from 1969-79 (Neil Young through Rust Never Sleeps), then Led Zeppelin's 1st album (1969), before my L.A./Oakland Raiders (I have been a Raiders fan since 1982) tear the (you know what) out of the Miami Dolphins this morning at 1:00 pm ET/10:00 am PT on CBS. GO RAIDERS!!!

Way to go Raja!!! Take THAT, all of you iSheep!!! (this means YOU too Cindy Margolis) ATRAC OR DEATH!!! I also dig the multiple screen shots 4, 9, etc., exploiting the MiniDisc/Hi-MD-exclusive interchangeability of reusable media that iPod and other MP3 players don't have. Someone out there please do a Photoshop job of Cindy Margolis holding a MiniDisc Walkman (legacy or Hi-MD units OK, I will take great pleasure in dwn loading it) and let's convert not only here but the rest of her iSheep buddies to the wonderful sound of MD/Hi-MD!!!

True, the EX700SL IEM's are a bit too pricey, way out of my league, but I am sure that Sony will (hopefully) use their heads and come out with a lower-priced cousin of them, much like they did last year when they released the EX85SL/LP, which was the lower-priced version of the EX90SL/LP IEM's.
-
I myself like my new MDR-EX90SL (JE Version) IEM's for use with my MZ-NH700 and RM-MC40ELK, they sure are better sounding than the old EX71SL in which they replaced, although they don't have deep bass like over-the-head phones do (and like the old MDR-A34's for Walkman use), they do have better definition (the highs stand out but not too much compared to the EX71's) a ton louder (106 dB for the EX90's compared to the EX71's measly 100 dB), and obvious un-filtered midrange, it's just too bad that other IEM manufacturers (Sennheiser, etc.) don't make remote-friendly phones like Sony does. True, they may not be the best sounding IEM's, but for Walkman use they are quite sweet sounding for their purpose. For the under-$100 category they sure are nice, espcially if you want teriffic sound on a budget. As far as the over-$100 range of IEM's, Sennheiser will finally have some competition, and I can't wait for the new $325.00 MDR-EX700SL's to come out, I just sure hope that Sony offers them in Silver as well as the already-planned black ones they are coming out with.
