The disc wasn't a blank one - it was the one I had been using with your app in my MZ-N910. I'll try with a blank disc.

Can't seem to get it to work. This could well be user error though... I connected the MDS-JB980 to my PC via USB and pressed the NetMD button on the front panel I installed the WinUSB driver I opened up Stefano's Web MiniDisc app and clicked on "Connect" The pop up box appears showing Net MD I select Net MD and click on "Connect" The pop up box disappears and "loading" comes up on the main app page It then just sits there displaying "loading" - I've waited about 5 minutes and am assuming that means it's not going to connect successfully Am I missing a step somewhere Stefano?

If I can find a USB B cable (I've got one somewhere) I can check for you.

Hi Stachu. They work okay with my MZ-N910.

I'll check that video out later today - thanks

Amazon.jp will deliver to the UK but you might need to use an intermediary for some of the Marketplace sellers on there. The Sony Basic MDs I was looking at were being sold by Amazon.jp themselves so they will send direct to a UK address. I didn't have to use an intermediary for the blanks I ordered from a Japanese seller on eBay but I think it very much depends on the individual seller and whether they ship internationally.

Thanks for the heads up zzzuppp. I just bought 50 from Amazon but good to know there is an alternative source here in the UK as stock at Amazon seems to come and go. You could combine with the blank discs Kevin posted from the same source and avoid postage charges too.

I've was ordering new sealed discs (the Sony MDW80T ones) from Japan based sellers on eBay. They generally worked out at around £3 per disc delivered but you do run the risk of getting hit by import charges if getting them delivered to the UK. I haven't bought any for about 18 months though and the seller I was using (and I never got charged any additional import fees) does not seem to be operating any more. Amazon.jp still sell new Sony MDs (the "Basic" ones) and you can pay import fees etc up front. A pack of 25 costs £61 (£2.44 per disc). You need to create a new Amazon.jp account (i.e. your UK/US or whatever account won't work) but Chrome will translate the site into English to make it easy to navigate. Having said that, the site Kevin posted does have a really nice selection of MDs available if you're after more interesting ones.

There definitely does seem to have been something of a renaissance recently. Long may it continue!

It's probably better known as Apple Lossless? It's basically Apple's version of FLAC. I have to say Stefano that your app is brilliant. I've never bothered with NetMD before as I was put off by using SonicStage and sorting out the drivers etc but your app is amazingly simple (even for an idiot like me ).

Thanks Stefano. I've got it working now. Sort of. Seems to be fine with MP3 files and AAC (.m4a) but every time I try to convert/upload an ALAC file (.m4a) it fails. Do you know if it should work with ALAC files?

Thanks Stefano. Does it require any sort of drivers on an Android device?

The manual has some information re the ATRAC versions your Walkman has but not sure if this really answers your question? Page 80: There is then a table on pages 81 and 82 detailing the bit rates/recording times for the different modes. Also, on page 83 it states: Link: http://minidisc.org/manuals/sony/Sony_MZ-RH1_user_manual.pdf

I've never tried using NetMD so don't have SonicStage on my PC or any of the associated drivers installed. When I connect my NetMD walkman (MZ-N910) to my PC and click on "connect" in the app I get a pop up box saying "no compatible devices found". Is this because I don't have the drivers installed Stefano? My work phone is an Android phone but I don't have a mini USB to USB C cable so cannot check that.

I keep meaning to do some listening tests with some LP2 and LP4 recordings on my JB940 and JB980 to see whether I can hear any real difference between Type S and Type R. Once I (finally) get around to replacing the belt on my JB940 I'll give it a go. I've got portables with Type S and Type R but I think there would be too many other variables there to draw any useful conclusions.

This looks great Stefano! Does it require any drivers or anything to be installed when using a PC?

Panasonic SJ-MJ88 - AA Battery Case
BearBoy replied to SigmundLePuppeteer's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
I am guessing that it may only ever have been an included accessory with those Panasonic MD portables that it worked with? Not sure how easy it will be to locate one on its own but you might be able to find one included with a player on eBay etc, although this might obviously cost a fair bit... Good luck anyway! -

According to the Service Manual over on Minidisc.org, the model number for the external battery case is: K3ZZ00200038 See bottom of page 3 here: http://minidisc.org/manuals/service/panasonic/SJ-MJ88.pdf -
Internal FFC (ribbon) cable reference
BearBoy replied to kgallen's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
Really useful information. Thanks for posting it Kevin. -
Seems like you've solved the mystery of that MDS-JB930 then. Good luck with the 470.

Glad to hear you got it fixed and it's playing music once again. I just need to swap the belt on my MDS-JB940 and then all of mine are operational once more.

MZ-N710 NetMD USB connector - standard or weird?
BearBoy replied to 47LUC5's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
Great news. Glad to hear you've got it sorted. -
Not sure if any of the below helps? I recorded a couple of songs from Spotify earlier this week using my MDS-JB980. The recordings are mastered very loud and, with the digital recording level set at default, they show as being pretty much brick walled at 0dB on the meters on the MDS-JB980 and never really fall below -4dB (not a lot of dynamic range...) Despite this, I cannot hear any audible clipping either through headphones or the analogue outputs. The MDS-JB980 I did this on is also "UK tuned".

What have you got the input level set to? Does it happen when listening to a MiniDisc or just an input?
