  1. That MDS-JA555ES is up to £740 now but one sold last night in the UK for £624. The ad only had a single (blurry) picture though and a brief description.
  2. Did you make any recovery media for the Vaio? Mine badgered me constantly to do so...
  3. I added that to my watch list. Not because I was intending to bid but just out of interest to see how much it eventually goes for. It's up to £660 now with 7 days left. Obviously these things tend to shoot up in the final 10 seconds so it'll be interesting to see what it fetches. There's a BIN one in the UK on there for £1,295 as well.
  4. NetMD aside, I think the MDS-JB980 still has some advantages over the earlier QS decks: Type-S for higher quality playback of MDLP recordings and the group function. If you're not interested in MDLP then you'd probably be better off saving some money and going for an MDS-JB930 or MDS-JB940. They're both Type-R and, like you say, appear to have better build quality. They also have more connectivity options if you're connecting up a lot of kit. I wonder if the MDS-JB920 tends to be cheaper than the others because it's "only" ATRAC 4.5?
  5. What were you doing, Kevin? Comparing the sound quality?
  6. The £70 I paid for the MDS-JB940 back in 2016 seems like an absolute bargain now! I’ve been keeping half an eye open for an MDS-JE480 (in case I ever need to steal the drive for one of my 980s) but even they seem to be commanding much higher prices now than a year or so back. There was a time when I thought about trying to pick up an ES deck (555 or 333) but I don’t think I’d ever be prepared to spend the sort of money they go for these days.
  7. This sounds like a great piece of work, Jonas! *potters off to start looking on MiniDisc.org for decks with RS232 connections...
  8. Hi Christopher. I think I've worked out the issue with me being able to reply to threads. It's just threads in the Announcements and News sub-forums I cannot reply to and I suspect that might be by design rather than any sort of fault. I seem to have lost the ability to "like" any posts made by moderators/administrators but the option is still there for posts by normal members. Like the new look and many thanks for keeping this place running!
  9. I thought that was probably the case but thought it worth mentioning about the USB bit :-) Welcome to the site and please let us know how you get on once the AC adaptor arrives.
  10. When you say "recording", are you trying to record in real time via the optical/line in or from a PC via USB? I'm assuming the former but just in case it is the latter then I think Sony recommend you connect the MiniDisc device to an AC adaptor.
  11. So you have! Maybe that protects you from me replying to or liking your posts ;-) I think it's because you are a Moderator? If you hover your cursor over the shield it says "kgallen is a moderator". I noticed Christopher had posted a "test" message in the Announcements forum so maybe something has been upgraded. I think things look a little different this morning. Although that could be my failing memory playing tricks on me...
  12. Has something happened to the forum (or my profile)? I don't seem to have the option to reply to many threads any more and only some posts have the option for me to "like" them. e.g. in this thread I can "like" the posts by bluecrab and freddyjollo above but not those by sfbp and kgallen. I seem to be able to reply to this thread but not the one about the BBC article Kevin started in the News section (there are many others I cannot reply to either).
  13. I seem to recall I had to reinstall the WINUSB driver when switching between my MZ-N910 and MZ-N710, although not sure that's much help if you're using a Mac...
  14. Glad to hear you got your machine sorted Shaizada and hopefully your advice might help others in the future :-)
  15. Techmoan's posted a new MiniDisc video to YouTube:
  16. Not sure about the other QS/ES decks but the MDS-JB940 has a "Date Recorded" button on the remote control. There's no such button on the MDS-JB980's remote control (nor does it have a clock afaik).

Hi Mus. You might be best asking somewhere like avforums.com. There is not a lot of TV related chat on these forums these days. Good luck!
  18. Lovely looking machine, Richard. I've had one of these on my eBay watch list for ages but the ones that come up always see to either be very scratched or a very expensive import from Japan.
  19. I’ve got some “normal” MDs with plastic shutters, Kevin. I think they are Sharp ones (they’re in a box somewhere atm).
  20. Is the MZ-NH700 your only machine? Just wondered if the MDs with plastic shutters work okay in a different player?
  21. Re Air mode: Activate the Air circuit on Scarlett 3rd Gen’s upgraded mic preamps to make your guitars and vocals sound instantly brighter and more spacious, giving them a lustrous sheen that can make all the difference in the mix. Air emulates the technology of the same name from our legendary ISA preamp – just ask your local hit record producer how big a deal that is. https://focusrite.com/en/news/introducing-scarlett-3rd-gen
  22. Did you have the "INST" switch engaged when you were trying to record from your MD player? You possibly don't want that engaged as it is designed for recording something like an electric guitar straight into the interface.
