Are you using a different computer from the one you used to transfer the songs to the player? Otherwise, I can't see why you'd be worried about losing the files. If the original files are still on your computer, you can simply transfer them back to the SS library from the 808. Is it a new computer? EDIT: OK, I read your second thread before reading your first. That's why I asked about the new computer as you didn't make any reference to it in this thread. I think other people might be able to help you if you wait for a while

I would be so happy if I could sync the 706 and 808 with wmp 11. It doesn't help when I start up wmp and get the tantalising offer: 'Do you want to sync with network walkman'. Well, yes I do!! If the new looky-likies don't need SS, does that mean one day our existing 700/800 could get a firmware upgrade that would enable us to use the sync feature, or would that only be possible for new players?

Sony NW-A806 or A808 - Transferring songs back to the PC
juli_ replied to cooliojames's question in Audio
There's no reason for your songs to be automatically deleted from the player unless you specifically delete them. However, you won't be able to transfer them back to your SS library since they don't exist there in the first place. If you start to run out of space for your own music, then you'd have to start deleting, as there is absolutely no way to transfer them back to the library unless you have the original discs to rip from, or unless they're on your hard drive to begin with. I don't know any other way to transfer songs with other software, but if you do a search for Sonicstage alternatives, you might find something useful there. Hope that helps -
It's amazing, they seem to be giving the speaker system away like it's worth tuppence! I've never known such a good deal. By the way, I have the CPF-IX001 and also don't have a clue about the wireless pod or software or anything, but I don't care, it sounds superb!

I know, it's complete madness. 4 months is no time at all for anyone to get really familiar with a product. I am still learning all sorts of new things about mine, and now it's 'history' already? Well, I'm glad I bought my daps before they were relegated to the scrap heap so cruelly and prematurely

What?? - I have cheese with a longer shelf life than that

Is it normal for Sony daps to be discontinued after such a short time? Or is this true of Creative, iPoo, Samsung etc? Does this mean we won't get firmware updates for the 706 and 808 anymore?

I didn't know about the 'freebie' giveaway until I was on the Amazon UK site and saw some really really bad reviews for the wi-fi speaker system. I was very surprised as it was exactly the same as the previous one, but with wi-fi. Then I read the reviews and saw that some people had got it bundled 'free' with the Sony player, but it was the wi-fi part everyone was complaining about, not the sound! I have to confess that I loaded the software and then when I saw the zillion instructions for setting the wi-fi part up, I gave up in dispair and just use it as a speaker system. I didn't buy it for the wi-fi facilities anyway, it was because it was such a bargain and cheaper than the model without wi-fi. I don't think I've ever seen such a 'giveaway' before. It's worth almost £200! http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-CPFIX001-CEK-...s/dp/B000K9DMDS

Great offer - Argos was also giving away that exact speaker system with the 808 a few weeks ago. I already had an 808 but I still managed to pick up the wi-fi version of the CPF-NW001 for just £99 which is pretty good! I had the CPF-NW001, then I sold it and got the wi-fi one which was cheaper because of the discount. And yes, the sound is unbelievable isn't it, considering it's so small!! It's quite bassy so I tend to reduce the bass on the remote control unit and use the EQ on the 808 instead. Well done, you got yourself a real bargain!

What was wrong with the leather case? Did it not have a protective screen? The clear case is realy good, sturdy and it's so easy to operate all the buttons. The first one I bought was faulty, and when I turned the volume up - it just stuck and went straight to maximum, blowing my ears out in the process! But the seller replaced it with no problem and this case seems fine.

Yes, the player does support Atrac advanced lossless, but I did an experiment last week between atrac @ 352 kbps and advanced lossless @ 352kbps, and could not hear a difference at all. The difference may be noticeable on a home system but through the 808 I can't tell the difference, plus the file size is much smaller! I've got around 400 songs on the 808 at 352kbps and still have 4.6 GB to spare. I don't have a huge music collection so space is not an issue (although my collection is growing as I type!!). I would definitely play around with a few tracks you know really well, and encode them at different rates - once you're happy with them, just use that setting all the time. If you test them first, you'll save a lot of time later if you then had to redo them all.

Yes you are - I couldn't see that when I was replying to your message

HOUSEkid' date='Aug 23 2007, 02:15 PM' post='26358' Congrats on your new purchase You can convert then to Atrac 132kbps (or lower) which I believe would result in smaller files than you have already. But I would test a few tracks at differing bitrates first to make sure you're happy with how they sound If you want to leave your mp3s as they are - just make sure you have ticked the option: "Transfer as is" as I think the default setting is set to transfer/convert as Atrac 64kbps You can only get gapless playback if the CD was imported in Atrac format There isn't a limit thank goodness! They're pretty good considering they're 'freebies'. I'd wait to see what you think of them first before buying another set. I went through a long journey of headphone testing, 'finally' settling on the Shure SE210s, but have 'finally finally' settled on the Denon AH-C700 which have the same kind of fit as the Sony EX range. I got them new from eBay for $125, and they cost £149 here in the UK, the same price as the Shure SE310s - and they are so comfortable I can't feel I'm wearing them! The sound quality is amazing, but best of all is the cable which untangles itself!

http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/search.dll...r+carrying+case I think it's the same place I bought mine from. I didn't think to ask if you're in the UK, as the seller is in the UK

I had that silly silicon case for all of 2 hours before I sent it back for a refund. It's not protective at all. I can't think of what use it serves other than to give the unit a 'jelly' feel! I bought the clear hard case which is brilliant as all the functions are easily available. Plus my minor niggle about the 808 was it felt too 'thin' in my hand, so the clear case gives it a tiny amount of much-needed bulk and I actually prefer how it feels now. I got mine from eBay for £17 from a guy with great feedback. They don't seem to be easily available I've noticed! If you want the link, tell me.

Do you mean a protective case, or is there also a carrying case?

name='stantheman' date='Aug 22 2007, 12:18 AM' post='26315 Album art is a pain and doesn't behave the same way all the time so it's difficult to troubleshoot. How are you transferring the album art? I find the only almost-foolproof way for me, is to drag the artwork back over to the cover again, this nearly always fixes it. Also, besides the individual tracks, did you check the 'main' cover in the library? I've often noticed that even if I 'see' a main album cover in the library, under 'properties' it shows a blank cover. . . no idea why. But check this just in case. Yes, just right click on the album (make sure you haven't opened it to show all tracks) and then delete. By the way, I think Simon hit the nail on the head when he said the transfer problem could be to do with drm - either way, you don't have to rip the CDs again, just transfer then back from the library. Irritating, but not as bad as having to re-rip them all. Do you mean computer memory or space on the your player? If you mean computer, transfers place quite a strain on CPU, but if you mean space on your player, it's easy to see what format they're in, if they've transferred in lossless you'll be able to see on the player itself or by plugging it in and checking through SS.

I'm really glad you bought this up. I too have exactly the same problem with Atrac files not transferring back to the library, but instead sitting stubbornly on the player. The only option I have is to delete - then transfer them again from the library. What's stranger, is that I can transfer WMA files back to the library with no problem at all, it is only Atrac files that won't budge. I have a vague feeling it's something to do with the location for saving imported files, and the only reason I say that is because I occasionally get a message to say: "Location for saving imported files not found". I changed the saving location from the default to 'My Documents' as when I chose 'default' all my artwork disappeared. Did you by any chance change the location at all? It's quite time comsuming to have to transfer everything back again when Atrac files refuse to transfer back to the library. Well, I never have to re-rip the CDs again. I just delete them from the player, not the library. They're still in my SS library so I can transfer them back any time. The only extra step involved is deleting them from the player first, which is just irritating and inexplicable! Try deleting them from the player, and then re-transferring from the library. I can't see why you'd have to re-rip the CDs again

Sony Nav-U NV-U51G I had to chuckle when I read in 'Computer Active' that: "This is one of the better looking GPS systems we've seen, despite its ridiculous and unfriendly name" . Try saying it out loud, it doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. :D :D :D

LOL! No media, and no supplied headphones. And no SE products. There are no rules - but these are the rules

Hiya - stay this side of the iPod!! The NW-A808 definitely does NOT have a volume limit on it. I know that many of the players did before the launch of the NW-S706, but the latest ones don't. I have both the 706 and 808 and for casual listening, around 15/30 is fine. If I want extra 'oomph' I'll put it up to a maximum of 20, and it's plenty.
-
Thanks Zizone, you just cleared something up for me. I could not understand why the files transferred to my 706 as PCM as I didn't think it supported it. Is PCM the same as WAV?
-
Yes, I see what you're getting at. OK, so here's my next suggestion - gurus, where are you?? So all you did was transfer everything from the A1200 back to SS and then on to the 808? Nothing extra got transferred from the existing library? If not, a gremlin must has stolen your space, it makes no mathematical sense at all.
-
I think the 808 has an actual 7.5GB usable capacity. When you deleted the playlist, the music files weren't deleted - only the 'virtual' playlist. Other people have mentioned the same thing, but when you make a playlist, it's doesn't duplicate the files, it simply creates a list. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but the reason no space is freed up when deleting the playlist, is because no space was taken in the first place? Try making a large playlist and note the capacity remaining on the player - then transfer the playlist to the player, and you will see no extra space has been taken.
-
Because (for some inexplicable reason) in order to transfer files back from the player to SS library - the original files must still reside on the computer. I still don't understand why and I completely sympathise with you, because the same thing happened to me. Fortunately my collection was only 4GB and I did have a lot of that on CD. But until that point, I assumed (like you), that if the files were on my player, then I could just transfer them back to the library. I felt quite sick when I saw the error message pop up. Once bitten twice shy - now I use the backup tool and save every last file to make absolutely sure it doesn't happen again. This doesn't help you at all, I know that - and I understand how frustrating and upsetting it is to realise you've lost your music for seemingly no good reason at all. Why wouldn't anyone assume that if the music is actually on their player, that they can transfer it back to the library? I really think a big warning should be stuck on the front page in capital letters stating: "Danger - do not EVER delete files from the computer if you plan to transfer them back from the player as your music will be lost forever unless you still have the original files" You are not the first person to have been stung by this and I'm sure you won't be the last. Sony need to sort this out. It's ridiculous that the repercussions of deleting files from the library once they're on the player are not made clearer. A lot of hearts will have sunk along in sympathy with you if that's any comfort
