  1. I agree with most of the words concerning Sony's lack of overall knowledge of most MD products, but you must remember that you were probably talking to people who are at the lowest end of the chain and don't specifically deal with MD overall. As far as I know, when you call Sony's technical support or product inquries it's ported to two main groups, either audio or video. The guys in this class are just reading whatever they can find off the computer. If you are able to ascend past these people, you usually reach the product specialists. They are the ones you want to speak to, but reaching them is difficult and you usually need some affiliation to reach them. MD product specialists are very keen on most aspects of MD [even Hi-MD in some cases], and if they can't answer your question they will most certainly get back to you if necessary. I've been higher up the chain but I rather not digress too much about their internal structure. Nonetheless, every time I call Sony about a product inquiry, they are always most friendly and helpful, even if they don't know what the hell they are talking about.
  2. Try reading this: http://forums.minidisc.org/viewtopic.php?t=4223
  3. The NH900 is not that much. It can be found in most e-tailers for under $300. It would be much more accurate to knock off $100 from the NH1 to equal the price of the NH900, not $50. Anyway jthm, I'm not very good with DAP's. I suggest you do some reading at head-fi.org/forums if you don't get any answers from us.
  4. I agree with KJ 100%. It's a shame this unit doesn't have a HD digital amp, though..
  5. Touche', then. :rasp: Enjoy what you've got for now, and if you feel that if you need more later, then go for it. I employ a ton of non Hi-MD units and you don't see me frettin'. I understand where you're coming from, though.
  6. This only works for Hi-MD units. Welcome, btw.
  7. Welcome. Did you install the software that came with your device? If not, just go ahead and download Sonicstage 2 off one of the links in the NetMD forum.
  8. jthm, why don't you give Minidisc Canada a call and assure your sentiments about the taxes? I rather know the facts than assume such..
  9. Welcome. I think that modding a portable unit in this sense would be quite a difficult task and probably not worth it, but don't let me stop you! Why don't you just scout a deck on eBay with the appropriate I/O's you're looking for? IIRC, there are decks with what you're looking for, and they aren't too expensive.
  10. Hello there; please do not triple post in the future. Anyway, you'll have to convert it to *.wav first, so basically: SHN->WAV->MD Download the conversion software here: http://www.etree.org ..and it's called MKWact.
  11. Try uninstalling via the directions in the NetMD faq [like what you did before - registry edits and all], and install Sonicstage 2. We'll work from there.. Wait a second, this is a dupe post. I'm locking this thread and we can continue our discussion in YOUR original thread, here: http://forums.minidisc.org/viewtopic.php?p=23713
  12. Wow, this is definitely a sticky! You're quite the risk-taker, I'd be afraid that my unit would blow up if I tried anything like this. If you post a full guide it might be able to make front page news on minidisc.org, ya know. I can think of alot of people that would find this handy..
  13. Welcome. I suggest you search a little more next time! Try downloading Sonicstage 2 from the relevant links in the NetMD forum.
  14. Try uninstalling completely via the directions in the NetMD faq [registry edits and all], restart, and then install Sonicstage 2 only [iceedtea's build].
  15. It could induce harm if you're using a unit that uses a different power scheme than what your country does, i.e. using a Japanese unit in US, etc.
  16. Uninstall the codecs you installed, Chris. Welcome.
  17. Sharp will probably come out with Hi-MD units late this year or early next.
  18. Yes, European models have a 2.5mW cap on the headphone amp because of French law - he won't feel the effects of such in Mexico.
  19. Sharp does seem to give the best functionality with recording, so perhaps a good NetMD recorder will suffice for now. Maybe if your ambitions strengthen you can then go for Hi-MD. So, how much are you going to hypothetically snag that MT880 for? You should probably indeed get that unit, as it seems ideal for this scenario. It's a very favorable unit, actually. Why isn't Minidisc more popular? Poor advertising, lackluster reviews by the consensus [giving it the overall "It's dead" feel], and now the competition from portable music players like the iPod and such. Players like that have options far beyond Minidisc's capability, such as multi-format codecs, louder headphone amps and much more. The true advantages of the MD format are waning these days and people can see that. MD truly belongs to a niche group of people who can see light in MD's unique [but respected] live recording ability and the overall "cool" factor of discs and tiny devices. I still think it's great for a budding enthusiast and definitely should not be overlooked as a portable solution. Hi-MD will strengthen MD's game a bit - if you can't tell already then just wait, you'll see.
  20. It doesn't necessarily have to be used with your fingernail. It's actually very intuitive for it's small size. I can't really think of any good ways to explain exactly how it operates, it's definitely something you'd have to feel to understand. I liked it, regardless.. p.s. What're you going to get, Arthur?
  21. That's weird. Well, I'll have to call them back sometime and tell them they were wrong, I guess. :rasp: That sucks, though..I don't like these LCD remotes without backlit screens.
  22. Oh! I see. Well, I could call Sony and figure it out for you, or you could call Sony Mexico. They're really friendly when you have a product inquiry and not a complaint, as they usually get those kind of calls only.
  23. Hola, and welcome. Referencing our wonderful equipment browser, here is the information for both units: MZ-NF520: http://minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-NF520.html MZ-N510: http://minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-N510.html If you have any further questions after reading both pages, please ask.
