Have a Hi-MD question that doesn't need a thread? [part II]
Christopher replied to Christopher's topic in Minidisc
Even I am unaware of the true build of this unit, and I am inquiring with a fellow who used a real model and will have a straight answer within a day or two. Hiya, and welcome to the forums. First off, I think alot of people prefer the asthetics of the NH900 over the NH1 because it has a 3-line display on the unit and one line remote, as opposed to the one-line display on the NH1 and the 3-line remote. I myself am still a bit confused as to what I should purchase, but it really seems to be the NH900. The NH900 will have better battery life [with a more efficent battery] compared to the NH1, and the AA add-on is merely a bonus. You can take the NH1 battery out, but there are no aftermarket chargers for this type of battery, so all charging will have to be done with the unit. You will be able to charge via the PSU/adapter, but you will not be able to charge via USB. Hope this didn't confuse you. -
Indeed. Once I recieve my NH900 I will make a final word, if necessary.

Did you read what I wrote in that summary? Read it again, specifically the Sony part. :rasp:
-
The converter will not equal more charging time. It merely has to do with charging your unit correctly, to assure that the battery is not harmed and the unit isn't damaged. Read this for more information on digital amps: http://forums.minidisc.org/viewtopic.php?t=4223

No offense taken. Just wanted to make sure you knew exactly what you're delving into. Enjoy the unit!
-
Hm. Download the version from Sony's site [connect.com] and install it over what you already have. I assume you have iceeedtea's build? Welcome, btw.
-
Arthur, in all honesty I think you should get the MZ-E720 for ten dollars more. Whilst the E620 features a digital amp, it's not a digital amp that will carry any benefits towards the sound. If you are strapped for $10, I'll pay the difference. I believe strongly enough that the HD digital amp [compared to the regular digital amp] is worth it. Regardless, here's a link to the unit, please go through this link whenever you're ready to buy [no rush ] Here's the E720, that I will pay the difference for:

Yes, it is 100% backlit. This information was available in our equipment browser, specifically the entry for the unit in question: http://minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-NHF800.html You going to get the NHF800?

No offense, but are you unaware that Sony = misconception?

Thanks for the words of confidence, tim. I agree with you 100% about Hi-MD's success as a storage medium, but I also hope that people who used MD exclusively for live recording [whether it be for their own endeavors or for another's] transition to Hi-MD, it'd be ridiculous for them not to! Anyway, the picture that gave me the biggest indication that there would not be an AA add-on pack was this: [bottom of NH1] Now, as far as I know, it's always been the same type of design for the AA add-on pack for quite a few generations. Screw in, no? There is a very good chance that they made a new adapter that would fit in this port, but it doesn't seem likely. I think Hi-MD's ability to draw power off USB is the compensation for all this, and frankly, I'm content with that. I don't care anyway, I'll probably end up getting a NH900 as I can't justify $400 for the NH1 [i could get a hella nice iPod for that]. $400 and $ for discs? Meh -
If you're ordering off Audiocubes, then you need to tell me what you're buying so I can make sure that we get affiliation credit from it. Seriously - let me build you the link to the product in question beforehand. As for a voltage converter, I think they're necessary although some will contest that they aren't. To be safe, just get this: http://www.voltageconverters.com/cgi-bin/s...tion&key=VC100J I did and it was one of the best "buys" for my unit(s). I rather be safe than sorry, and with a price like that you can't go wrong!

I found a definite pair, at least for me - and probably for you. Check these out: Athena ASB1; here's a review: http://www.soundstage.com/revequip/athena_asb1.htm . They look to be winners with the low output of our systems. Here's the store I'll probably buy mine from: http://www.onecall.com/PID_15539.htm ..but I'll spend the next few days scouting for better deals beforehand. Additionally, after two hours of research it all kept pointing back to these, but I can find others if you're not content with the asthetics.

Nice little mini-review. I will note that this is the budget model for Hi-MD, and probably has the worst capabilities for navigation - I expect better results with the higher-end models [not to mention they'll come with remotes]. I'm not really sure about playlists [hopefully someone else will chime in], though..did you read the manual?

Cool. Now I'm tempted to buy a pack off Sony..darn you! :rasp:

Actually, after extensive analysis of NH1 pictures I believe the NH1 does not have a AA battery attachment add-on. -
..just to assure it's not a software issue, you may want to try uninstalling everything via the recommendations in the NetMD faq [registry edits and all], and then installing again.

Interesting little algorithm there, are you sure about that? -
Yes, I would go with Audiocubes or Team Digital. If you plan on buying from Audiocubes [www.audiocubes.com], please inform me so I can build a custom link to the product in question and the sale will help the forums.

Welcome to the forums. I think you may want to look over your instruction manual again - you should be able to just press "mode" and go from there. You were referring to the Sharp DR7, right?
-
Yeah, it's not very hard at all. Most of the serious recording enthusiasts around here use that type of interface exclusively. Look over some of the posts in the Live Recording forum - you'll learn a great deal.
-
Cool. I had tried before and it said they weren't available yet. I'm a bit more patient so I'll wait till I can get them locally, but I hope you enjoy the discs! You have a Hi-MD unit, right?
-
Hm, good points - Hi-MD car units are definitely up in the air and a MDLP unit is static and available ASAP. Hm, you need [click on picture for more info].. or.. Of course, those are double-din and quite expensive, but if I recall correctly your tastes were in the exquisite range, no? :rasp: If you're referring to single-din Sony, then yes, I agree..they're not very attractive. I'd seek the Sony MDX-CA790X or MDX-CA680X if you must. btw, look a bit in that site I linked via the pictures, espesically the car audio [din units, etc] part. You'll be drooling, I promise.

*points to self* :rasp: -
It says in his FAQ that the drivers for this unit are included, so I'm not sure what's up. How did it go, regardless?

First off, excellent topic and info as always, Donna. I look forward to reading your insight. Now that's something I must contest with. Hi-MD is leaps and bounds beyond MDLP, and it even employs MDLP too! The bitrates and encoding [ATRAC3plus] are definitely much better than what MDLP had to offer. Be sure you read this so you know what's up: http://www.sony.net/Products/Hi-MD/capacity.html Also, if you are going to seek a MDLP DIN unit [or have one in mind], please state your price/budget so I can verify that you're getting a good deal? I can also link you to some online stores that have a great selection, too.
