Two (2) more days and she goes to goodwill. Joe
-
Sony DAPs are notorious for spinning up the HD when accessing the menu. Heck, the HD1 would spin up the HD if you even played with the volume buttons!!! This always leads to lesser battery life. My old iPod (ick) and my Cowons - X5L and A2 don't spin the HD up just to access the menu system and therefore last much longer. I clearly remember how quickly the Vaio Pocket (love the device, hated the battery) would loose a charge over a couple of days. Grrrr. Does anyone know how the A1200 handles a charge if the machine is off? Thanks. Joe

I have a Sharp DS7 manual if someone needs a hardcopy. You pay shipping and it is yours. I am getting rid of all of my minidisc stuff. Thanks. Joe

Unit no longer sold. An update as well. I found a nick in the power cord of the unit that probably occurred from moving furniture. The electrical (copper) cable is fine, but it will need to be covered with electrical tape. I can provide photos if needed. I am going to change the price to $100.00 + $15.00 UPS shipping/insurance/tracking: The CD/MD unit and the following bonuses: 1. All the above mentioned MD 2. 3 blue HiMD discs. 2 sealed and 1 opened. 3. A Reactive DT-1AL mic http://www.minidisco.com/Reactive-DT-1AL thanks If no one wants this unit, it will go to Goodwill in one week and I will just take the tax break. Joe

I am offering up my Sony Sony MXD-D40 CD/MD deck for sale as I no longer need it and hardly ever used it. The CD side has seen maybe 20 hours of use and the MD side has seen maybe 8 hours of use...in three years. The unit has been kept in a smoke-free (adult owned) home for the last 3 years. I am asking $115.00 for the deck. Shipping will be flat cost, based on location via UPS ground. If anyone is interested, please feel free to contact me. Thanks. Joe Edwards

If you want a player only and you don't want to wait another six months til late spring (at best guess) look at the HD5. It has a standard mini-USB connector so you don't have to worry about proprietary cables. Also, it has a user replaceable battery. The A3000's battery can be replaced, but it isn't quite as easy as just sliding it out of the HD5. SONY went back in time in quality and usability with the A3000/A1200/A1000 players IMHO... If SONY would stop being so fickle and stick with an idea longer than 6 - 9 months, then their profit margins might stop dropping... I REALLY did like the HD5. I should NEVER have sold it. /sigh. Oh, in regards to the screens. The HD5 uses as standard LCD while the the A3000 uses and OLED. The "boring" LCD just works and can be seen in all light levels. The OLED is fine in low/medium light conditions (ie indoors), but take it out in direct sunlight and it is a real pain to read. Sometimes older tech that just works is a better idea..but is is your decision.

Sony has cut off it's head in the U.S. already. 1. We only get the 2GB version 2. We only get the black model. 3. The price is a bit too high for a 2GB unit. I can live with number three, but the lack of variety here in the U.S. just shows that Sony has NO INTEREST in the U.S. as a market place when it comes to portable audio. Sony has already given up on us. I hope their other customers do better.

I would say the Sony's sounds better overall as well. Certian music types (electronic/trance/some jpop) just sound very metallic even o the new iPod nanos. The only iPod I was impressed with was the original iPod shuffle. The new one I know nothing about. It is too bad Apple didn't use the chipset from the Shuffle in their other products! My collection (all sold off but one and it is on ebay now) of MD/HiMD sounded very good. Also, my Sony HD5 (also sold off - why why why) sounded as nice as my MD units. Currently I use a Sony PSP for my light music enjoyment and it sound great too. The only real weakness to the Sony equipment is the software we are forced to use!!! No unicode support, limited capabilities, and god forbid the database from SS gets wonky!!! Why Sony can allow music files to be drag-drop-play on the PSP but not on their other audio devices is beyond me. If Sony would allow such a thing, their units would sell so much better.

It is correct. Take a look at the specs for the device. No where is USB 2.0 mentioned and when you try and download a gig of files you will see how slow it is. I took mine back to Fry's yesterday - VERY DISAPPOINTED. Pros: Plays music mp3 and atrac - mp3s are drag/drop Plays videos Displays photos Displays text files Works well as a Skype phone Text messaging works as described Nice screen quality and brightness removeable battery Cons: Videos require software to convert files which ISN'T included in the unit. Why? Same as with the PSP. Cannot connect with weak wifi signals. 1 bar is iffy. No headphone jack. You MUST use the included mic adapter. Don't loose it. USB 1.1 speeds. WHY? WHY? WHY? Keys are too small. This would be okay if this was a multi-country release, but this is a US ONLY device. Rear plastic feels thin and cheap. The front is very nice and solid plastic. The sliding hinge (I tried two of them) isn't sturdy at all. Missing featrue found on the PSP: No RSS support. Keys aren't backlit. I really do understand what Sony wants to do with the Mylo, but is is going to be a bust. TOO EXPENSIVE for the features offered. This looked like a wonderful product and it could have been if Sony would simply: 1. Lower the price. 2. Improve build quality (I am old and don't like disposable electronics) 3. Add USB 2.0. Absolutely necessary for transferring vids and music. 4. Make the keys backlit and a bit larger. 5. Add more video codec support and remove the cryptic PSP video file system (MPROOT).

I am selling my last minidisc recorder, a Sony MZ-N910 with several extras. I hope someone here can make a good home for her. Item number: 140039245368 Thanks. Joe

BE AWARE that the USB connection speed on this device (tested it myself) is ONLY USB 1.1. /sigh

Just get a copy of Image Converter (doesn't do direct DVD conversion), PSP Media Manager, or one of the other multitudes DVD-to-PSP converters. They run from free to about $25.00. While the PSP might not have the wides range of codec support, it does make it pretty simple to decide what format to use. It is too bad Sony gambled (and lost) on the UMD video idea. It would be nice if Sony updated the firmware to allow ripped videos to be shown in full screen at resolutions higher than currently offered. If the PSP had the capabilities of the Cowon A2, they would have a great PSP/Game Machine.

Playstation 3 to Facilitate Downloaded PS One and PSP Games for PSP Use
lamewing replied to Ishiyoshi's question in PlayStation
I makes perfect sense to me. 1. This just reiterates that the games can be downloaded, whether is is PC/PS3. No sense in not reminding folks. 2. Why waste time? How is it a waste of time? As I just stated, they need to advertise the downloadable games for the PSP, so why not make use of that time to also mention that the PS3 can do this. 3. This also acts as an advertisement that the PS3 and PSP are going to be linked, capability-wise. Sure, many folks may have already heard about it, but it makes sense to push this information right before the PS3 goes on sale. -
RH1 displays Kanji, yet the EH1 doesn't? WTF?
lamewing replied to yamagatacamille's topic in Minidisc
Weird. My last NH900/NH1 displayed kanji through the 40ELK remote and my last EH1 would display the same kanji titles - both from the same disc. I could understand it if this was coming from the 55ELK remote, but the 40ELK as well...hmmm. -
Do the Twinkles still have PLASTIC SHUTTERS? Joe
-
What do you expect these days? The we (the U.S.) are just Sony's dumping grounds/electronic graveyard. May next year they will provide us with those new-fangled transistor radios too.
-
get applocale from microsoft. Use applocale to run Sonicstage, this whay you can transfer the songs with the correct language. The HD5 will display Japanese kana, and kanji. It will only display the Chinese that is also used in kanji. Hangul will not display at all. Do a search here or minidisc.org for more details. Heck, it is a sticky on one of the forums. Joe

Well there is supposed to be a new device or two this fall, that will replace the A-series(?) and something about a video player as well. I hope Sony doesn't mess this up as the fall could eaisly be the time that Apple released their 6th generation iPod. Either Sony will finally make a good showing or they, once again, will be at least 6+ months behind the times. /sigh
-
BEFORE you buy them, be aware that these Maxell (?) discs have a PLASTIC SHUTTER and probably won't last in the long haul. I have two of them and they haven't given me trouble, but I just thought you should know. The Hello Kitty MD have metal shutters. Joe

Does it have anything to do with the HD spinning up when you make a menu request. I know some of the older Sony DAPs did that any time you access the buttons. Also, I didn't know you could still find the Connect software. Any clue how I could get the most current version. I am a bit interested in trying it just to see if my system will run the program. Joe

Can confirm this on my MD40 deck as well. I think there are two files that the older units can see and one is a place-holder file that displays HiMD disc or something to that effect. This isn't an example of Sony spoon feeding us the technology, but merely them providing us with a simple alert that we inserted the wrong disc. No conspiricy here.

Delv, Thanks. What I don't understand is why sometime the album options don't show up and sometimes they do. Whatever the case, my "new", fully-charged PV has been playing continously for 21 hours nonstop. It is good to know the battery life is as claimed - better actually.

Okay, I have a nice, new Pocket Vaio which seems to have a mind of its own. Sometimes when I hit the repeat/suffle button, I com up with six choices and at other times I get eight....the extra two either two small cds with an arrow between them and the other shows a single cd with the word shuf next to it. I assume one means to keep repeating from album to album and the other means to suffle and repeat the album, but can I not just do that with the repeat and shuffle option? There is nothing in the manual that relates to these extra icons. Any ideas? Thanks. Joe
