  1. I was using the E10 earlier tonight. It's set to ignore SCMS and does so reliably. Most or even perhaps all of the E-series decks can do that...E12 users also report success. I have the US model. BearBoy, if you want to let that Tapehead person know HowTo, it's just this: Setup Menu > Copy Bit > [Permit]. That setting is deep into the menu. "...maybe not enforced in any J MD model?" If J = Japan, then yes, enforced, as on my JPN MXD-D400. IIRC, the E10 actually strips SCMS, not just ignores it....thing is, I don't usually need to take things that far.
  2. Based on my MD experience since 1998, I would say Keep if at all possible, especially given the two machines are the same model. Or, you could just wait for something to go wrong. Even though my MXD-D400 (JPN) is still up and running, I now wish that of all the MD decks I sold, I had kept the MXD-D400 (US). Yes, I have backup for the existing D400, but not that same model.
  3. Someone sent me a couple of Hi-MD formatted discs that for whatever reason, he could not erase. I do not know on what machine they were created. My MXD-D400 would not erase them, but the MDS-E10 did so without complaint. I guess what I'm wondering is whether an older MD unit, even a working one, would do the trick.

    Sony MDS-JB980

I once commented on the weight diff between the 940 and 20ES as a measure of quality. (I think that was elsewhere.) An opinion was offered that it's mainly because you could use the bottom panel of the 20ES as a bulletproof shield. Not the entire reason, of course, but not without some merit. ;-)

    Sony MDS-JB980

Between the 930 and 940, I thought the 930 was superior in overall quality. Neither could truly approach the 20/22ES or especially, the 333ES. That 333ES would often "fool" me into thinking I was listening to a CD—in LP2 mode and using its own RCAs for output (it was part of a large stack of components). If you want to go by weight, then the 333 is 10.5 kg; the 20/22 ~7.5 kg. The 555ES, at 15.3 kg, might be the heavyweight. Nevertheless, it's all subjective and I agree 100% that "best" is contextual and relative.
  6. Right. In fact, I had an instance where, when streaming audio, if I reduced the volume by about a third, I did get most track marks. But I indeed was asking about the Behringer.
  7. Thanks. Here's a way I have foiled SCMS. Elegant it is not. I do have some CD-Rs that have SCMS because of how I copied them. Rip the CD-R. [Insert mp3 silent track of a few seconds between the ripped tracks.] Copy via opt. out to MD. I guess when you rip the CD-R, SCMS goes away? Anyway, the silent tracks almost always do the trick for track marking, when SmartSpace is enabled. Too well do I recall the bad old days when SCMS was a real monster for MD users.
  8. Yes, the D40 and D400 do SP@4x...the D400 also does LP @4x (D40@2x). Both do mono @4x.
  9. None that I know of...plenty of CD/MD, but not the other way. I use separate standalones for that...Sony MDS-E10 & HHB BurnIT.
  10. I can copy to CD-R or CD-RW, which can then be ripped. That's how I do my own. PM me if that would help or to explore all options. I'm in the Boston area....I know you guys are even harder-hit than we are....be well in any case!
  11. The E12 does have coax I/O (per its manual), so the lack of optical is easily dealt with. I don't have the E12...have the E10 (similar). Its SQ is very good, but I've had decks that sounded better: JB930, JA20ES, JA333ES...maybe others. Of the decks I have had, I feel that the E10 sounds most similar to the MXD-D400. That's not to disparage the E-series. I use my E10 mainly for recording, at which it excels.
  12. http://minidisc.org/sony_mzr97500_comparison.html The likely reason for the [5|7|9]00 series being noted as -gte 4.5 is the available hack to upgrade these units to R. Recently saw a report of successful hack to R.
  13. Thought the MDLP rec/play on the JA333ES was of outstanding quality, especially considering it is a Type R unit. Many were the times it "fooled" me into thinking I was listening to a CD.
  14. Right place, but maybe a tough question. That does go way back. I've never seen a report of one that was actually built, but maybe someone here has. I owned a Hucht ICP 1-CE Copyprocessor for a long time; now I rely on the MDS-E10 for SCMS killing. If Mr. Hanft is extant, perhaps you could try to contact him?
  15. The 980 does support SFE, but you should not have to use it for something like this. By my observation, not normal at all...I have never had anything like that happen on the 930, 940, D400, et al. At least I learned that the 980 has the same ATRAC chip as the D400. Would like to know if you get the same result with the 470.
  16. Thanks for the responses. I meant Write and should have said so explicitly. Any MD can play any ATRAC is pretty well-known. I saw the following on minidisc.org, regarding the MXD-D40 (CXD2662R): "ATRAC Type-R is used only during realtime SP mode dubbing, not for MDLP or high-speed SP mode dubbing." This is not a new subject—I'm just looking at it from a different perspective. Got to wondering how a Type R deck could somehow produce less than Type R in SP mode. I thought that if that were the case, then there would have to be either something in the Type R chip enabling it to do less than R, or else there would have to be a separate chip. Similarly, the Type S (inclusive of R) MXD-D400 (CXD2664R) is thought by some to be unable to effect Type R at 4x...but that seems not true, as noted previously here by sfbp and maybe others. Anyway, it's just not clear to me how such a process could happen. MDLP is by definition a different beast altogether.
  17. Question about ATRAC chips: If a chip is, for example, Type R, can it also deploy prior ATRAC versions, or is it that version only? (I'm hoping that "there are no stupid questions" is true!)
  18. I used MDLP4 for audiobooks for many years, mainly for my wife's car. At last, she learned how to make them herself, on an MXD-D400. Not long after that, she bought a new car, sans MD. Audiobooks now going onto CD-RW—which she also has learned to create. I still have good use for the D400, though!
  19. Thanks sfbp & Kevin for the D40 opt. out info...have passed it along to the interested party. If only Sony had just equipped the D40 with D.out to begin with!
  20. Thanks. I know this was discussed some time ago, just could not locate it.
  21. I seem to recall that optical out can be added to the MXD-D40, in the manner of doing the same to the JE-480. There is someone who wants to to that with the D40. Is it indeed possible?
  22. About 15 months ago, Eric W. stated explicitly, "I have no plans to retire this site" (minidisc.org). But that was the last I heard. Now, what is all this about burgers in Vancouver!? You guys need a visit to Boston, where the burgers are good, the seafood even better, and best of all—in range for me. Oh well, if you're ever nearby, LMK. :-) Good to see the issues resolved.
  23. Not sure that's the issue, as of my three machines, only this one can access. The others ones (also reported by other folks) see this. One of the people reporting is, I'm pretty sure, in good standing here.
  24. It started, apparently, in the following (https://www.reddit.com/r/minidisc/comments/f521um/a_new_community_wiki_minidiscxyz/) and was propagated manually to an MD F/b group, where it was asked of me: "Do you actually see the forum contents? The CSS and database don't load, on multiple IPs and multiple web browsers." Though I've had no issues myself on this computer, I did indeed have a problem myself from another IP address. I am going to check the other IP right now...yup, still not accessing. But fine right here.
