  1. A good addendum to this could be: MZ-M* Though it gets confusing when you throw the MZ-RH1 into the mix, being RH (same as second gen Hi-MD, e.g. MZ-RH10/MZ-RH910) but the RH1 is also Mac-Compatible and is a 3rd gen unit.. Even more confusing is the MZ-M200, which is in essence the RH1, but with a bundled Mic (and bigger pricetag)
  2. I've actually run a few in-depth tests in the past (frequency analysis, etc) regarding uploading SP>PC via RH1, and my conclusion was that if "import as PCM" is selected, there is no loss of original quality. I'll see if I can find the posts, but I am 100% confident that SP is not converted to LP2 while importing. Some confusion persists with some people because there are two separate settings in SonicStage dealing with uploaded material, and if only one of the two ("Save uploaded files as WAV") is selected, and not the other setting ("Format for importing non-MDLP tracks") the uploaded SP files will be saved as Hi-SP and then automatically converted to WAV. I think this is the source of major confusion. The option for choosing the format for non-MDLP uploads is in an odd place, under NetMD transfer settings/Advanced. I think a lot of people miss this setting. It's default is Hi-SP. EDIT: Heres a post with SP uploading discussion and some analysis - http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=19709
  3. Well I installed it on one of my backup PCs, and also copied a recording I had uploaded to my laptop (but not stripped the DRM) to this PC. It didn't convert the file. Got an error. It may be because it is the trial version. However, I too am skeptical.
  4. you need 3 more posts!!! right now yr at 1334... hehe anyways, have fun! you will be missed! don't take too long, we will try to keep everyone in line during your absence. be sure to take some before and after pics to post too!
  5. My guess is that alot of people were researching the RH1 with the holidays coming up...
  6. Here you go: http://www.minidisc.org/manuals/sony/sony_mzn707_manual.pdf EDIT: The thingie you'll need is an 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo cable. Male connections on both ends. Make sure you get one that is stereo (it will have two black rings around the tip, mono cables have 1 ring). You might even already have one if you have computer speakers hooked up. They use the same plug usually.
  7. Line-out would be the headphone jack on your MZ-N707. Simply run that into your computer's line-in jack and use a recording program (Audacity is a good freeware choice) to record the signal. The MZ-RH1 is the newest MiniDisc (Hi-MD) unit, and the only one that will currently upload older "legacy" recordings via USB, such as those made with your MZ-N707. The USB on your MZ-707 is 1-way only, PC>MD http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=7070
  8. Just wanted to emphasize this point, but be aware that this does not include the RH1, which can record in SP/LP2/LP4 on-unit.
  9. are you using the battery while recording or are you plugged in?
  10. what the heck kind of connection does it have?
  11. Glad to see there is still development happening with this program. You've been here for us since the beginning (before SONY gave us the ability to convert to WAV!), and I encourage anyone that finds this program useful to donate if they can. I have donated in the past and am sure I will again, knowing it's still in progress. That said, fortunately (or unfortunately) I have not experienced this problem. Does it happen only when encoding to mp3?
  12. The RH1 & M200 are identical, however the M200 comes with a bundled microphone. The M100 is the "Mac-compatible" version of the RH10 (which itself is not Mac compatible). All of the models you mentioned are Hi-MD recorders and will record in PCM, and can upload any Hi-MD recordings to PC & Mac. The RH1/M200 will also upload to PC older "legacy" recordings made with pre-Hi-MD units (SP/MONO/LP2/LP4), and currently the RH1/M200 is the only model that will do this. http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-RH1.html http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-M100+RH10.html Hope this helps clear things up a bit.
  13. I would recommend sticking with SonicStage 4.2... 4.3 only offers Vista compatibility over 4.2, otherwise it is identical. However, when I installed 4.3 on XP (on 2 different computers) I experienced a number of problems including being unable to upload. SimpleBurner is available in the downloads section of the forums: http://forums.minidisc.org/downloads/details.php?file=93 (use your forum login)
  14. Indeed, the MZ-RH1 will upload "legacy" recordings. Anything recorded in SP/MONO/LP2/LP4, as well as the Hi-MD formats. The only thing it will not upload is tracks that were transferred (NetMD) using SonicStage or OpenMG. Also it will not upload "legacy" discs to Mac at this time, only to PC. In other words, anything you have recorded with any unit via microphone or line/optical-in can be uploaded to PC with the RH1. It can even upload prerecorded MD, as well as tracks transferred via SimpleBurner.
  15. Only when used with MultiTrack MD recorders.
  16. Keep in mind you won't be able to use either of those recorders to store data on MD. Only music. In order to store any other data on a disc you will need a Hi-MD recorder. The older NetMD recorders have USB, but the only functionality that provides is transferring music.
  17. There was talk about switching the equipment browser to Wiki, unfortunately it has not been implemented as of yet... MZ-RH1, no doubt about it.
  18. Not sure if it will work, but try using MarC's Hi-MD Renderer program... http://www.marcnetsystem.co.uk/himdrenderer054.zip
  19. Seems someone has taken the bait: http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/calling-bullshi...-not-311034.php
  20. Good luck with this... For future recordings, follow the instructions in this thread to remove DRM from your files: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=16088 That will prevent this problem from happening in the future. It might also be a good idea to do this to your existing files as well, at least the ones you can still access...
  21. If you try to play a disc recorded in LP2/LP4 in a non-MDLP player, the unit will display "LP: (track title)". Try what A WHOLE LOT states and be sure to set your transfer as "SP Compatibility Mode".
  22. Welcome to the forums! You've about summed up most of the major differences: To add to the differences: MZ-NF520D is a NetMD, which can be used to transfer music from your PC>MD faster than recording in realtime. MZ-R500 does not have this feature, but as you stated has a line input. This model does not have Mic input, so line-in will be the only way to record. Unfortunately even units that come bundled with the AM/FM tuner remotes cannot record from it... Silly design IMO, but thats the way they all are... only built for listening to the radio. You're only option for recording radio would be line in. --- All in all I guess it depends on what you plan to use the unit for. There have been quite a few enhancements of the MiniDisc technology since these units with the introduction of Hi-MD, which is what I would suggest looking into.. for various reasons. Hi-MD FAQ: http://www.minidisc.org/hi-md_faq.html While I have nothing against these older units (I have plenty of older units myself), the fact is that they do in fact start to break down over time. The biggest problem that starts to affect nearly every unit is deterioration of the ribbon cable that connects the record/overwrite head. Once this begins to happen, units will start randomly corrupting/erasing discs, quite a headache. So be cautious when purchasing older used MD recorders. Back to Hi-MD... Aside from better sound quality using Atrac3+ (not to mention the ability to record in uncompressed PCM), and the ability to upload your recordings, you can also use Hi-MD recorders as external USB drives on PC & Mac computers. Also, there is Hi-MD media which comes as 1GB discs (holds much more than the legacy discs). Have a look around the forums as well as the main site ( http://www.minidisc.org ) and see what you can find about Hi-MD versus Legacy MD. If you have any questions, we're here to help!
  23. By "3 Speeds" I assume you mean LP2, LP4, and SP "Compatibility" Modes? I don't think that model is MDLP, so LP2/LP4 won't work regardless. SP "Compatibility" mode should work though... What version of SonicStage are you using? If your portable has a line or mic input, try recording a test track in realtime using the portable itself in SP mode and see if that works.
