  1. Somehow I don't think transcoding the files (if that is what you are attempting) will make the quality better... call me crazy, but... Also.. if you have the tracks on CD anyway, have you tried SimpleBurner?
  2. As far as backwards compatibility with the 2nd gen models... You shouldn't run into problems unless you want to manually record (with the unit itself) in pre-HiMD formats... In other words, if you have a bunch of partially full standard MDs that you want to do live recordings on... you are out of luck... (I am very glad I realized this and didn't sell my NH-900) Keep in mind however, that you can use SonicStage to record in those formats with the 2nd gen units. So things arent a total loss. As much as I like my RH10... I am still very much disappointed (as are alot of people) with it's shortcomings.. Looking on the bright side, at least I can record in total darkness with the RH10..
  3. I have been hesitant thus far to use the built-in WAV converter... The standalone converter that sony put out soon after HiMD was initially released was a nightmare for me... Automatically splitting longer recordings, etc... I haven't taken the time to test out the built-in converter in SS3.1 based on that previous experience... What is the longest recording you have converted with this method? My initial recordings that were screwed by the previous version were approx 2 hours... but the program split the file after about 70min,.,,, which was not at all a good place for a split... Most of my recordings that I upload are fairly consistent improvisational meanderings with no real room for track marks... Therefore I dont really have that as an option for the longer recordings..
  4. I was under the impression that you coupld only upload analogue recordings, and not digital (USB or Optical)...? ??? Might have to try this out... EDIT: -just realized that I have uploaded quite a few recordings that were recorded thru optical... -doh!
  5. I am a musician (though the term "sound artist" fits a bit better) who sometimes works with other musicians, so I counted that as a yes... Some current releases: Aaron Lennox - Aellakai (Digitalis Industries, 2004) Aaron Lennox - Sibilance (Magnanimous Records, 2005) And a few links to some other random material that I am a part of: Cosmic Sky - Most recent site... In early stages of development... Rain Theory - Improvisational acoustic guitars... Confluens - Solo guitar reminiscent of early Philip Glass... "Train" Video, Practicallytwins.com - Features "Confluens" as soundtrack... If anyone here uses SoulSeek, I have most of my projects available to download... Including more recent material. My username is "raintheory". -enjoy
  6. listening to some excerpts of improvisational meanderings with piano, guitar, etc. that I have helped create over the past 3 months...
  7. I'm familiar with Mogwai & Tortoise.. Have heard very little of explosions in the sky though.. Good stuff, I'll go through my collection when I get off work and get some recommendations for you as well
  8. I sometimes carry around a portable reel-to-reel tape recorder I'm completely serious on that too.
  9. Definitely one of the best... They are quite a show if you've ever seen them live too.! You should check out some of their other albums if you get a chance. Also they have plenty of side projects that all have their own unique qualities.. -a
  10. Ravi Shankar & Ustad Ali Akbar Khan - Ragas Found this gem on vinyl @ a yard sale, very gently used. 25 cents..
  11. Hey, nice to meet a fellow didge player!! We seem to be few and far between.. How long have you been playing? On topic: - Two great reasons to look into a HiMD recorder.. 1 - Ability to record in uncompressed PCM. 2 - You can upload your recordings done from Mic/Line-in. Personally I hardly ever keep any of my music files (mp3 or otherwise) in my library after I have transferred them to an MD.. Technically you could import an mp3, encode it to HiSP, transfer to HiMD.. delete the HiSP file from library.. import same mp3, encode at 105kb, or whatever & transfer that file to a different disc... There would be no need to re-encode the HiSP file.. Just encode the original again.
  12. I for one am glad I did not get rid of my N707 or NH900 before I purchased my RH10... I have quite a few regular MD's with extra recording space on them that would have basically gone to waste.. I do quite a bit of field recordings, live music stuff, and the fact that the 2nd gen HiMD units wont record on those discs (except thru SS) really makes me wonder if the upgrade to the 2nd gen was worth it for what I use MiniDisc for... IMO, *any 2nd-gen HiMD unit with a mic input should be backwards compatible and allow recording onto regular MD's that have already been recorded onto with a pre-HiMD recorder.. All in all, I guess it all depends on what you use it for.. If you mainly listen to mp3's and dont do much in the way of microphone recording,.. then you should be fine with just the RH10.. However, if you do any decent amount of microphone recording (and have done quite a bit with pre-HiMD, as I have), then there is a reason to keep a recorder that the unit itself can record in LP2, SP or whatnot.. EDIT: Just noticed that your NetMD has no Mic/Line-in.. I'd say you probably don't need the NetMD... Anything you want to transfer to your older discs in LP format can be done with SS.. BTW.. What format(s) do you have your collection in?

    Ssaad.exe?

I've searched and found 1 post referencing SSAAD.exe... I am wondering if anyone has any updated information on any problems that could arise if I delete this file? I'm tired of having it run everytime I boot, and it likes to keep putting itself in startup even after you take it out.. grr... Thanks a bunch all! Edit: I'm running SS 3.1 on win2000...
  14. I believe one is only able to upload analogue recordings... not digital.. I.E. you can only upload recordings done in realtime through the line-in or mic.. not through usb or optical in...
  15. Haha, yes I use it all the time (donated as well).. I don't fully trust the upload to WAV option in SS 3.1, I had issues with the OMA>WAV program Sony had out awhile back because it would split longer files.. Regardless, I am intrigued by this whole science project. One nice feature GoldWave has is an effects chain that you can use in the batch conversion ( Volume adjustments, EQ, Effects, etc. ) which is what peaked my interest in using it to convert OMA files.. I figure that I use GoldWave anyway to edit 90% of my uploaded HiMD recordings, so why not save a step if possible? -aA EDIT: That barefoot thing w/3 feet of snow was all uphill from what I've heard.
  16. The second file I tried got to 40% and did the same thing... Opening the file before it decompresses it all.. very odd.. It would be interesting to find out exactly which codec GoldWave is using when it opens OMA files... Usually when you try to open a file that isn't supported, it asks for the properties (i.e. PCM Signed 16bit etc.)
  17. I didnt get any errors.. The progress gets to about 17% then opens the file... Without finishing the decoding... (only decodes and opens 1min of a 5min song)... Does the same thing for batch encoding too.. I'm going to try a different OMA file and see what happens.. BTW, can you see the OMA files under GoldWave without changing the Files of Type to "All (*.*)" on your system?
  18. Interestingly enough, I was able to get GoldWave to open an OMA file as well! Sorta.. First off, I had to change the open "Files of Type" to "All (*.*)" in order to see any OMA files.. And it only decompressed about half of the file.. Even though it didnt decompress the whole file, what it did decompress played back fine.. At least it's a start... I'm about to do some more experimenting.. EDIT: My converted file was ATRAC3Plus 256... What was your original physysa?
  19. I'll have to try this one out... I have Goldwave 5.10 myself, but dont ever remember being able to use it with .oma files.. That would definitely be nice to be able to go straight from oma to flac instead of oma>wav>flac...
  20. Good point, did you record the MD on the NH1, or with a different unit? Edit: What exactly does the error message say?
  21. If I'm not mistaken, you can record in the NetMD modes directly with the 1st gen Hi-MD recorders... just not the 2nd..
  22. try searching the web for "wmfdist.exe"... it is the runtime for the windows media format (.wma). all I know is that I was having the same error each time I tried opening sonicstage, and tried everything I could find in this forum. it worked fine after I updated this. let me know if it works after installing the runtimes. -a
  23. I had a similar problem that went away (i think) after I upgraded the windows media format runtime... I'm running win200 pro sp4 as well. Not sure if that helps, but may be worth a try? Edit: I did run the MDAC repair utility as well, but it wasnt until upgrading the windows media (which oddly enough, the sonicstage installer downloaded) that it finally started loading right... Nice member no. btw, "7,777" -aA
  24. The recordings that were automatically split in sonys old WAV converter were (i think) split around the ~45min mark.. Which was devastating because these were recordings of some of our extended improvisational musical endevours that really didnt have anywhere in them that could be track marked... so i ended up with two files that just happened to be split at the worst possible place.. -Edit: I guess it was around the 70min mark, now that I think of it... It split into two tracks, a ~70min, and a ~45min one. Perhaps sony thought they were doing us a favor by making them so they would fit on CD? sheesh... -aA
  25. Hey all, Quick question.. Sorry if this has been covered somewhere, I tried searching a bit, but to no avail... I Installed SonicStage 3.1 recently, and while uploading some of my own recordings, noticed that it gave me the option to upload as WAV files... I seem to remember trying sony's WAV converter with a previous version of SonicStage, and it would automatically cut the WAV files if they were over a certain length/size.. (at least it did this to me). Therefore I switched to MarcNet's HiMDRenderer (great program, I highly recommend donating if you use this program!). Basically, I am just wondering if anyone knows whether this same file-splitting situation will happen with SonicStage 3.1... Thanks All!!
