  1. If there is enough silence between tracks when going from computer to MD, the MD recorder may automatically place a track mark. There is a plugin somewhere I remember seeing for WinAmp that insterted enough silence in between songs for this to occur. I am unsure though if this works for both optical and analog. As for going from MD to PC, it depends. I use GoldWave most of the time, and had it set up at one point to where it would pick up where the track marks were (even if they weren't during silence) and place a cue mark, which then could be used later to split the file. I can't remember if I was doing this while recording with optical or not, and I know it didn't always work 100% of the time as far as placing the cues (sometimes it would skip one or place one where there wasn't one, but this is easily fixed). I'll try to set it up tomorrow on this laptop and see how I accomplished it. I think I remember a thread elsewhere in the forum asking something about track marks during real-time recording and as far as I know they were having no luck.. I'll be sure to post here and there when I get it going again.
  2. Well, I live in the USA but I took the opportunity to express my views on your behalf.
  3. The USB provides a "supplemental" charge while transferring tracks to and from the unit, but I wouldn't rely on the "supplemental" power to fully charge the unit. I would definitely recommend the RH10 if you will be doing recordings where decent lighting cannot be guaranteed. The RH910 has neither the OLED display, or a backlit display. Do some searching around in the forums a bit to see a good many peoples comments and opinions on the RH10. Personally I love my RH10.
  4. I am a fellow musician as well... I understand about the interference that sometimes occurs when using the transmitter. I actually have started utilizing that very thing in some of my experimental music... I have up to three separate recordings going simultaneously, each through its own FM transmitter, I then adjust the fine tuning on each to fade in and out from each other. I've had pretty interesting results so far. I'll post some in the gallery soon. My CD player in my car has a line-in so I always use that when listening to MD in the car.
  5. Cool, That FM transmitter you found on eBay should be perfect then.
  6. That looks like it should work fine. The reason it plugs into the lighter thing is to power the transmitter, no power would be sent to the HiMD unit (I'm thinking power being sent into the headphone jack may not be too good anyway ). The one I have runs off of 2 AAA batteries, but I use it for other things besides just in-car use. If you are using it strictly to play in a car, that one should work perfectly for you. BTW, does the CD player have an 1/8in (same size as headphone plug) auxilary input on the front anywhere?
  7. If you have a cassette deck you could use a cd>cassette adapter. If you have an aux input on the car stereo, you could run a line from your HiMD into that. Or, if all else fails you could purchase an FM transmitter thingy... Which simply broadcasts (short-range) the signal of your HiMD to your car radio.
  8. If they are audio CDs, you could just use SimpleBurner to transfer the files.. I believe you still have to have SonicStage installed, but you wouldnt have to import/transfer the music to your computer first... You can go straight from CD>HiMD. You can download it free from the Downloads section here in the forums.
  9. I've had no problems recording my old MDs to my PC by running the optical out of my MDS-E10 or MD-350 into the optical in of my EMU 1616m and onto my laptop... Keep in mind that you will need a MD player with optical out in order to achieve this. I think SCMS would only apply anyway if you were attempting to copy a 2nd gen digital recording. I have no 2nd gen digital recordings to test out myself. But as I stated, I have had no problems as of yet recording into my EMU...
  10. Have you tried converting the files by right-clicking on the files in "My Library", rather than having SonicStage convert them "on the fly" so to speak? Not sure if it would work any differently, but hey... we are talking about SonicStage here, so you never know.
  11. You may be out of luck with this one... I think you just lost what was on your disc. There is no known way to copy those files back to the HiMD and transfer, or even play the audio... May be worth holding onto the files though, just in case something comes around in the near future that can decode those for you.
  12. Hmmm... 18,000 or so registered users in this forum. Think they are all reporters? Seriously though... I do hope that somebody at Sony comes to their senses a bit and they at least continue development of MD/HiMD for the sake of LIVE RECORDING... When I bought my first MD recorder (also thee first MD recorder) I wasn't thinking at all about mp3 drag & drop, drm, or heck even a computer at all. I was thinking about plugging in a microphone and recording, without having to worry about tape hiss or wow/flutter.. The live recording bit is what sold me, and it's also what has kept me. If all I was worried about was listening to mp3s, there are plenty or reasons whyan ipod would make more sense to me. For me, MD is and has always been about high-quality recording. I'm not saying that I do not enjoy having the ability to transfer mp3's to my rh10 and listen to them.. . sure, it's convenient... but it's not why I bought the thing. It just wouldn't make sense to me if Sony decides to drop the format because it can't compete with iPod... Bottom line is, they were both invented/conceptualized for different purposes and it doesn't make sense to discontinue a product because something that was made to do something else sells better. Just my opinion though. Oh and I do know of more than a few radio stations that use MD...
  13. Personally I would recommend a decent pair of stereo omnidirectional mics for good all around useage. SoundProfessionals has a great selection here: http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/...tegory/110/mics As far as the losing of recording time even after deleting tracks... I forget the actual calculations, but depending on what format you are recording, tracks of certain lengths won't count even if they are erased. There should be some info on this odd behavior either in the manual, or here in the forums somewhere.
  14. This same thing happened to both of my HiMD recorders before I had fully discharged the batteries a few times. Apparently when the unit feels that it is in danger of not having enough power to do any final editing/TOC writing, it will stop everything to perform the TOC edit, and then shut down. Leave your unit playing (not recording, or it will stop beforehand) until the battery is completely drained, then fully recharge it. Do this a few times to get it used to the idea...
  15. Sorry to hear of your loss... I am a highly improvisational artist as well and have had the exact same situation. Unfortunately there really isn't a known way to retrieve the data or audio once it is corrupted in this way. I have gotten into the paranoid habit of running a line from the headphone out on my RH10 to the line in on my N707, and recording on the older MD too just in case anything funny happens. Good advice, as stated before... Use SSv3.2, upload and then do any editing. and if you really want to be sure, you can always playback and record in realtime before you actually do the upload. Good info here... http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=7436 BTW... Would love to hear some of your material, PM me if you have any online somewhere, or if you want to set up a trade sometime.
  16. Firstly, the RH10 plays native Mp3... So if you have the files already in this format, theres really no need to transcode to HiSP (HiLP may be worth it for the situation mentioned below)... If you are going straight from a CD/WAV file to HiMD for headphone listening, I would recommend HiSP... I haven't personally used HiLP much, but I would probably go for it for in-car use on long drives... Also, I would recommend HiSP over Mp3 if you have the CD or lossless music file. The 2nd Gen units aren't quite up to my standards for playing standard Mp3 files... HiSP sounds much better to me (and others) than Mp3 at commonly found bitrates, when played back on the 2nd gen units.
  17. try here: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=7070 be sure to share your site when you have your recordings up. Or upload some clips to the gallery here.
  18. I'll get some pics up soon detailing which connection was the culprit..
  19. If I were to utilize the TOC cloning technique to get back audio that was erased from a disc (by cloning the TOC of a MD with one long track), wouldn't there be the possibility that the data on the accidentally erased MD might be fragmented, and thus would not play correctly after the TOC cloning? I ask because as I understand it, cloning the TOC fools the disc into thinking that it has one long track... and if the data for the track was all out of whack from fragmentation, it seems to me that it woulndt play back correctly. Any thoughts on this?
  20. Sounds like your Navi/Menu button may be faulty... seems like its just going into the navi menu.
  21. I thought I would share this with the community... I recently won a Sony MDS-E10 rack-mount deck on eBay for $140 USD... The description stated that the deck would power up, but would not read the disc. After looking at the provided photos (which included a photo showing that the deck could at least read the TOC), I decided that for the price, it would be worth grabbing and maybe having someone look at it for possible repair. I have seen the same unit in working order on eBay for $699 USD. After unpacking the unit, I figured I would see what exactly wasn't working correctly (keep in mind, I know nothing of electronics, or servicing MD equipment). I inserted a standard MD, and just as I expected it read the TOC just fine. However, none of the functions (play, record, etc) were working. To my dismay, the eject button didn't function either. I decided that I would open up the unit to attempt to manually eject my disc. In the process of snooping around with the loading mechanism, I noticed that the ribbon-cable that connected the front panel controls to the main board inside the unit was kind of crooked. I carefully unplugged the ribbon-cable and reseated it. After doing so I decided to plug the unit in and try the front panel controls again... This whole process took under 2 minutes. After reseating the ribbon-cable, all functionality was restored to the unit. I am now able to record/play/eject whatever. And I am now the proud owner of a fully functional MDLP professional deck with optical out. All for $140 USD (oh, and $20 USD shipping). If anyone would be interested, I can post some pics of which connector was loose that prevented the functions from working.
  22. We should set up a poll for this one!! Has happened to each of my netmd/himd units at least a few times. Exact same scenario.

  24. Share what your MD recorders, discs, etc. have been through. Particularly if they are still workinjg properly.. But also as a memorium to the ones that didn't make it. MZ-N707 - Took a flight down a set of about 15 concrete stairs within 10 minutes of purchase... MZ-NH900 - Fell from approx 6 feet onto the sidewalk... Bent battery compartment lid... Easily fixed. MZ-RH10 - Decided that it wanted a nice bath of orange soda.. Cleaned up nicely after I recovered from a few minutes of heart failure. All units still work fine.
