There is no 128kBit Atrac3plus, because you have Atrac3 with 132kBit and 105kBit - called LP2. You can put these on a Hi-MD-formatted disc as well, doubling the running time compared to Atrac3Plus@256kBit. About the DRM: 1. you can transfer a song onto an unlimited number of discs. 2. You can play the discs in every player, that uses the same format. NetMD for old equipment, both & 1GByte for the new ones. 3. Hi-Speed-upload via USB is NOT possible for tracks downloaded from a PC. Upload is only possible for tracks recorded through Line-In/Optical/Mic-In. The old way via Line-In of the Soundcard is of course always possible. On the fly convert is possible, but the converted file is stored for future transfers. You can select the codec/bitrate in the Transfer mode settings. (Transfer Mode button between the two windows.) If more than one Atrac file is present for a song, SonicStage will always transfer the file with the highest bitrate.

Questions/Comments for Marc's uploading utility.

The traffic went down in general, I see that at the number of threads marked with new posts. Other forums I frequent show this too, the traffic went down there as well, so I say, don't worry. When all the clicks and kinks are ironed out, the number of downloads will surge considerably... -
And when all bugs are removed, give it the ability to select between different ./sonicstage/data/ directories to quickly select different skins.
-
If files already had been converted, these are transferred without change directly. You have to delete the imported files, including the .OpenMG-files but not the 'non-OpenMG-files' Then of course, import again.
-
Import the files, don't convert, when transferring onto MD, click on transfer mode, select 'Standard Transfer Mode', then click on 'Details', finally select 'Convert automatically and transfer'. In the dropdown, select the mode you want. Don't worry, you have to do that only once, SonicStage remembers it for future transfers. When reading in CDs, use the Format/Bitrate button instead. And again, SonicStage remembers that for future rips.

A different container format for the sounddata. OMG was the format up to SonicStage 2.0. OMA is the format from 2.1 onwards. The difference seems to be additional data for the Harddisk-player.

Sounds like that the coax input on the RS box got overloaded. Hmm, cheap was too cheap... Good to hear, that it works now...

Upload to PC is only possible via Soundcard. Connect Headphone out with Line-In of the Soundcard. Use your favourite Wave - software to record that on the PC.

Firmware update via USB is no miracle. It is done with PDAs, it is done with mobile phones and my DVD-Writer has got new firmware as well. So, why not doing it with MD-recorders and Harddisk-mediaplayers as well. And the usual way to do that is to connect the device, start a program, which contains the programming tool and the firmware itself. 2 minutes later, the software orders the user to disconnect and reconnect the device - thats it...

No prob.

There is already a thread about that, please use that one instead of opening a new one: http://forums.minidisc.org/viewtopic.php?t=6165

Okies, for Reference, my thread again: http://forums.minidisc.org/viewtopic.php?t...?t=5595&start=0 However, one thing I didn't payed attention to was, that I had to replace the mainboard after the first test. PSU, Soundcard, D/A-converter(MDS-S38) and the headphones stayed the same. So, I don't know if that had any significant influence, personally, I guess not. On another point, it is possible, that during an upgrade from 2.0 to 2.1 not all components are replaced. Since the dead mainboard initiated a windows reinstall, all SS-components were replaced. Finally, regardless of the differences, the biggest gain in quality is achieved by using a recorder and doing realtime recording instead. And in that regard, I can definitely confirm Dex' experience.

Sure. it's convenient, but since the source of my music is almost exclusively non-MP3, I just couldn't care less...

Questions/Comments for Marc's uploading utility.

The .wav is necessary for creating an audio-cd. If you don't want to do this, you can delete it after creating the mp3. -

According to a report on the developer magazine builder.au, Linux Australia got slapped with a takedown notice about the movies 'Twister' and 'Grind'. There is only a small problem, the MPAA-lawyers send out their threats after finding two directories on a FTP-Server with the same names as the movies without checking the contents of these directories. Now the MPAA could end up in an australian court... Heise.de reports, that the University of Paderborn in Germany got one of these letters as well, this time it is about the movie 'Ghost'. The MPAA found a directory named 'ghost' on an university-owned server, not realising, that it contained the popular postscript/PDF-viewer Ghostscript. Again software, the MPAA has no rights over. I think, it is time for criminal prosecution against the MPAA.

Well, if you want a chick magnet, take the NH1. However, since it should be cheap and take AA cells and line in is not needed, the NH600 is the closest choice.

There had been no announcements from Sony or any other manufacturer sofar. The only unit available for dedicated home use is this bookshelf system: http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sony_LAM-X1.html (now available at minidisco.com) And now a reminder: This forum has a search function, so I recommend using it to see, if your question already has been answered. This one has been discussed multiple times before. Aside from that, welcome to the forum.

Spectrum analyzation of WAV, 256kbps ATRAC3+, 132kbps ATRAC3
jadeclaw replied to Christopher's topic in Minidisc
1.) Type-R is the latest Atrac-Version for standard MDs. Type-S is a playback improvement for tracks recorded in LP2/LP4 This explains, why these tracks sound better when played on a recorder compared to playback on a PC with SonicStage. 2.) Expect atleast the same quality in SP, as, according to the manual, Type-R is included in the new codecs. The N707 has Type-R as well. 3.) Did some more testing, this time with some signals from the Denon Audio Technical CD. First the Channel Check, left to right, all modes passed with 100% separation, from right to left, LP4 failed with the speech splattering over into the left channel. As soon as something more happens than a single voice on one channel, LP4 always fails. Next, the phase check, all passed except LP4, which failed miserably, giving 50th's telephone sound, when out of phase. But since you are interested in high quality recording, the crosstalk audible was identical on SP/Hi-SP/PCM and live monitor and close to the limit of my TA-F470, which has already a few years on its back. Hope this helps. -
Spectrum analyzation of WAV, 256kbps ATRAC3+, 132kbps ATRAC3
jadeclaw replied to Christopher's topic in Minidisc
Okies, I'll give it a try: First, SP vs Hi-SP: Except for a certain example, I found no difference in Quality and I still have yet to encounter any other trip-ups. So from that point (atleast for my ears) I see no problems. There was no change in instrument placement and even 60's style ping-pong stereo poses no problems for Hi-SP. Speaking of joint stereo: I have found no audible indication, that Hi-SP uses any form of joint stereo. But, the new recorders can produce real SP-discs as well, but not upload them. Second, LP4 vs Hi-LP: Both definitely use joint stereo, LP4 uses intensity stereo, killing almost all channel separation, Hi-LP uses something in between, channel separation dies sometimes, when things get crowded - but you don't want to use that for music. Third, LinearPCM vs? Vs what? And that is the biggest improvement, Hi-MD gives you full CD-quality, something not possible with your old N707. So, any Hi-MD recorder, except the NH600, is a full replacement for your aging N707. Oh, and of course, welcome to the forum. -
bjsilva, Atrac has something, other codecs don't have: Editability. Sometimes it is that simple...
-
That is correct. Of course, you can point Winamp or any other Mediaplayer directly to the MD and play from there like from any other diskdrive.
-
Fret, first, USB upload of standard MD is NOT possible. Regardless of the SonicStage/OpenMG - Version. Regardless of the recorder used. The only way to get standard-MDs back into the PC is via Soundcard. Second, Hi-MD-Recorders can produce fully compatible standard MDs. Full quality SP is only possible through realtime recording through Line-In/Optical. SonicStage cannot produce real SP.
-
I have done it using my NH700, there it was possible to title any disc, regardless where it was recorded. With a NetMD,it is SP/MDLP only of course...

Kurisu, do yourself a favor: Install phpMyAdmin on the server (behind a passwort of course) and use it to regularly backup the database. You can save data and the structure in one go using the export function and restore the whole kaboodle with it, if something goes wrong. It already saved me tons of headaches... phpMyAdmin is here: http://www.phpmyadmin.net/home_page/ (Of course, if you doing that already, you are free to ignore my post)
