Hope that NH600 is not one of the "D" variety.

Hi guys. I'm getting ready to bite the bullet and get either an RH910 or an Rh10. Of course we have heard about the playback having some bass roll off (What is that? And how does it affect me? Sorry for my ignorance in that regard), and having to adjust the equalizer differently for MP3 and Atrac. My question is, does it sound *that* bad? Is it noticeable with low bitrate files or will I be ok with most of my collection, which is 256 or 320 mostly? Will it dissatisfy me compared to say, a flash-based player? Do the new MD units suck at MP3 playback? I myself have never been able to distinguish the artifacts of ATRAC compression when it comes to true SP and Hi-SP. LP2 did sound muffled to me, but tolerable, as I couldn't do an ABX test VS the original wav. Don't use it anyway. Given all of the above, do you think 2nd Gen Hi-MD is for me, when I'll be listening to 256/320 Kbps MP3 and true SP recordings mostly? Will I be able to bypass the intentionally-capped Mp3 playback with the equalizer?

^^^ Man! And to think we have to pay big bucks to get that kind of soundtracks here in the US. All I have from Cowboy Bebop is "The Real Folk Blues", recorded through the audio output from my VCR. >_<

I'll post pictures shortly. The MZ-E35 is in the box, doesn't have the original headphones, but I can send you a replacement. Manual, Gumstick charger, battery case. SP only. Digital Mega Bass. It's waaaaay tiny. Barely larger than a MD case (without the extra battery case.) 16 hour playback when using a gumstick (not included, but I can get you an NH-14WM for 5 extra dollars) and an AA battery. Will throw in some recorded discs from my personal collection. In box, with manual, remote. Everything but the original wonky headphones is included. The "Sony" and "MD" logos have lost their luster, but there are no scuffs on the machine's body. Second Unit MZ-R37. One of the best recorders Sony has ever made. I'll include the AC adapter and remote and optical cord. Uses 2 AAs and can recharge NiCd (Don't put NIMHs in there or you'll blow it up). I'll throw in blanks or maybe some recorded discs as a bonus. Make me an offer. Need to unload stuff to buy my first HDTV and an RH-10 Hi-MD. And these babies are sitting there unused.

Even if it reads discs just fine, it might be a sign the recording head (which is separate from the reading head) is going kaput. Try to record real time through the analog or digital inputs. If you still can't hear anything, then it's the recorder. If it works, then maybe the issue is with the original files. (VBR MP3, for example)

At least Sony has admitted to wrong doing. Who knows if the other companies have even bigger and uglier skeletons in their closets?

TK. I did it that way all right, and nothing happened. Maybe I got lucky, or it doesn't affect recordings on Hi-SP.

What are you talking about, Kurisu? It's time to stay the course! *sarcasm* Yeah, it sucks.

That's a DSP changing the properties of the sound to make your brain perceive it as if coming from around, or behind you. JmSokol: Unfortunately, all MD can record is 2 channel audio. I think, however, that if you record on PCM a stereo signal that has been encoded with Dolby Pro Logic or PL2, it will carry the surround signal with it when played back from the Hi-MD. Not sure if the Atrac compression would affect the surround code if you were to record it as SP, HI-Sp or any of their other flavors. I wonder if compressing a DPL signal to a lossless format would also mess up the surround info in it.

I was unable to replicate this. I combined two tracks that had been separated due to me hitting the T-mark button by accident, then removed the track mark after recording, and it played just fine. This seems quite random.

I see that you mention Podcasts. Usually, them files are too low on bitrate, and SS cannot handle them sometimes. Try converting them to another format, just like Atrain suggested. (I'd suggest Wav or WMA lossless and then import and load into SS.) Or convert them to 64/96 kbps MP3, CBR.

You know, when it's laying down as opposed to the stand, it reminds me of the design for most electronics in the 70's.
-
Only Hi-MD can use the extra bitrates. Net MD and regular MD cannot.
-
Because people might make a bootleg recording of a concert, and upload it and share it for free. While a CD you bought has already sent some of that price to the artist. That's what I think.
-
I can confirm this, read my previous post. Track uploaded already on SS 3.1, try to reupload it on SS 3.2= No go.
-
Just a note. I just tried to re-upload a disc I had previously uploaded with SS 3.1. It will not allow it, saying that the files originated from another computer. Oh well. No big deal. I have the files on my system, as WMA lossless.
-
The only solution I can think of is to convert your MP3's to WAV/WMA lossless and import and transfer those.

I'm happy to see I will be able to move files between our laptop and desktop here at home. Perhaps that'll convince my brother to get into Hi-MD. Sony, if you are reading this, know that I am most grateful. As I said before, I'm ok with DRM as long as its fair, and what you have done is more than fair: It's the right thing. Kids, remember that with great power comes great responsability. Say no to piracy! (Any music I buy and download comes from Allofmp3.com which is un-DRM anyway.) Let's prove to Sony's media division that we are not potential pirates, but enthusiast hobbyists, professionals and loyal users of a great product made even better by this radical change. Me is a happy camper.

SOMEBODY PINCH ME! I MUST BE DREAMING! Thank you, Sony!!! *runs all over the forum making airplane noises, happy as heck!* VRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!! Oh man.. I can finally finish my projects without fear of the dreaded transfer errors.... W000000000000000000000T!

Ah-Trac. I read about it in spanish first, and that's how it's pronounced in that language, and how it stuck with me.
-
I have a feeling that any new Hi-MD machines coming out won't support OMA at 320, but HD players will. Still crossing my fingers.
-
In order to transfer songs you must use SS or Simple Burner. Drag and drop is only used to use the MD as a data drive.

To make the story short, a fellow gamer team is developing a CD game for Turbo Grafx, and needs voice talents. I plan on submitting my demo after recording it on Hi-MD. I got a C 606W mike from Shure. Mono recording is not a problem, I can always make it binaural. My problem is, does it have to be a powered microphone, or will a dynamic one do? I can only remember that Sony says not to use condenser ones. Thanks for any info.

I'm not sure if my post got deleted. Not wanting to sound like a troll, but what good use would come of a better Mp3 encoder, if the current MDs make MP3 sound bad? Or will the new SS fix that?

SWEET!
