I only have the AT853 mics now. I have updated my Setup Page, I sold the AT822 to a guy in New Zealand via Ebay. You CANNOT use the AT822 with the Boost Box, it causes too much interference noise since the AT822 needs a AA to work. Won't work without a AA battery power. Good luck and let us know how it works.

Not a rumor, if you try to upload a track that has already been uploaded, it will remove it without even telling you. At least it worked that way in SS 2.3. I have NOT tested it since. I might play around with that this week in 3.0 to test.

The knob turns: counterclockwise lower gain, clockwise higher gain. By design it's a hard turn (don't want it turning by itself If you start with 18/30 (unity gain), you should lock the recorder and just use the Boost Box as your guide to the gain level. It will let you know when you approach distortion by flickering the LED clip light.

I have both and it's VERY limited. That's why I am selling my 40ELK along with my NH900. I don't have much use out of a limited fancy looking remote. You CANNOT set the 40ELK to stay backlit. You don't get the full menus. Kinda lame but you don't need much with that OLED. Not sure how different the 40ELK and the RH910 would be. Anybody know?

I'd have to disagree about the OLED. Having recorded shows since 2003 with MD, I can tell you that that 6 line OLED glowing brightly has made all the difference in the world for me at shows. I don't even need a flashlight for setup. I just get everything ready before or during break and just watch the levels and times on the OLED. For me personally, it has meant more enjoyment of the music and less watching and worrying. That Reactive Sounds SPA-2 clip light also helps :-)

Also what color did you get from Etronics?

Etronics is a great store and site. I would have bought from them but for some strange reason last week they had NO MDs listed. I have bought a MD deck and my NH900 from them with great service and prices. I couldn't find any and I thought they had discontinued. I can't find any on Best Buy's site, Good Guys or Circuit City (is this a trend?). Did you get a LCD remote and charging stand like what they have shown on the web? If so, the Sony stored reamed me for $314 after tax and I didn't get a LCD remote or charging stand. It was nice to walk out the store with it in a bag but $50 is $50 and if I didn't get all the accessories, then shame on Sony.

The differences that I have noted b/n the RH910 and the RH10: RH10 has the OLED (makes all the difference in the world for me) RH10 is more metal, less plastic and heavier (I held a RH910 in the Sony store) RH10 has a non-LCD remote, no remote on the RH910 RH10 has the NH14-WM gumstick battery, the RH910 the cheap and worthless NH-10WM I found these differences to definitely be worth $100 in price.

I have used a battery box that came with a set of Giant Squid Mics. I always had to amplify (using normalization in Cool Edit Pro) the tracks. I haven't normalized anything since last December. Let's just say I found normalization to be something I would save for VERY low recording levels. The Boost Box puts me right where I need to be...

My setup was AT853 mics into the Reactive Sounds SPA-2 into the line input of the Hi-MD (NH900 or RH10). I set the Hi-MD to manual record at 18/30 (which is unity gain-no suppression or amplification of the input or something like that :-). I have worked with the SPA-2 twice with this band and I kinda found a spot that gives me about 4 bars at all times (less than -12db) without any flicker on the SPA-2. If I notice any flicker on that clip LED, I back off on the dial just a hair. It's a great warning that you might be getting close to distortion. As far as the battery box vs preamp question: if you turn the gain all the way down, it's just powering the mics without any amplification. That's basically what a battery box does, it sends 9v power to the mics. No soundcheck, I just set it to low while the house music plays and then I am ready for adjustments in the first few minutes. I leave it set the entire show once I am satisfied with the levels. I always just put the Hi-MD on Hold after I set it to manual recording and leave it in pause until I am ready (I use the remote for that operation if I have the remote with me). I uploaded all of these with SS 3.0 without any problems. I still track the shows on the way home so I have 8 to 9 files per set/MD. I am still paranoid about trying to upload an entire show/MD at one time. I lost some shows like that with SS 2.3. I haven't tried it with 3.0 since I like to track the show regardless.

I have gotten gun shy with normalization and I think the levels are good enough with the preamp pushing. I went both times with a NOS/DIN configuration on the cardioids using this mount: Mic Mount from Sound Pros Thanks for the comments. I am heading down to Florida for the Wanee Festival. I should get a full work out there. I have some new subcardioid elements that I plan to use. I also have some hypercardioid elements that I will try one of these days... See ya down the road.

I have recorded 2 recent Derek Trucks Band shows in Savannah, Georgia (4-01-05) and Greensboro, North Carolina (4-09-05). I used the NH900 with AT853 mics into the great Reactive Sounds SPA-2(aka "the Boost Box") for the 4-01 show and then switched to my new RH10 with the same setup for the 4-09 show. The RH10 is a great Hi-MD for live recording. The ability to see the recording levels and recording times on the OLED in almost any lighting condition is the reason I have one. I really like having the line inputs on the top of the unit, not the side. I have to say the Reactive Sounds Boost Box is the real deal. Very cool to have that clip LED indicator. You just set the Hi-MD to unity gain (~18/30) and then watch for any flicker of the clip light and then backoff from there. It can't get any easier. Take a listen to these shows and see for yourself. I overwhelmingly recommend the Boost Box for anyone looking for plug-in power and beyond. Solid construction and excellent results. Here are the links: Savannah, Georgia, 4-01-05:>Derek Trucks Band Download Greensboro, NC 4-09-05:> Derek Trucks Band Download I would appreciate your feedback.

The biggest factor for me is the OLED because I DON"T want a remote when I record shows. Most of the shows I record I do not stealth and therefore the remote is just another wire to get tangled during setup and breakdown. I already have 2 mic wires and the Reactive SPA-2 to deal with during setup. It's just more complicated with a remote. When I used the 40ELK I always had to turn my head or get close to read it and the LCD was never anywhere as bright as the OLED. The OLED allows me to get the info I need (quick time check and level check) by just looking towards it. The Reactive Sounds SPA-2 even allows me to not worry as much about levels since I just look for any clip light flicker from time to time. The NH900 always felt too plastic to me and I wasn't impressed with the Jog wheel or that piece of plastic that covered the USB hub. The RH10 feels heavier and more solid. The USB port is protected by the slide door and even the AA compartment actually looks like it fits. When I put the AA on the NH900 it always looks like it doesn't fit and could easily break off. The recording battery life seems to be improved with the RH10 but it's also a new NH14 I am using, not the cheap NW10 they include with the NH900. I think the OLED improves battery life when compared to powering the LCD and the 40ELK on the NH900. So bottom line for me: OLED, battery life and better build made the RH10 the better choice upgrade.

I haven't tried the mp3 file playback. Not sure about the time stamp, I will check on that in the morning. But, it does save the manual recording level on the RH10. I really like that the USB does charge the battery this generation. Although Sony warns it will only give about 1/2 charge in 6 hours and that laptops on battery power won't do the job. At least they got it half right, no reason why USB can't charge the battery some. I thought I read on the forums that you could record in mp3 at 128 but that is NOT an option. Not any where near a big deal but I thought I read that. I will only be using PCM or Hi-SP for concerts and the like. Here's what I have noted: no speed control, no MDLP recording on the unit, the lack of line out on the menu, the lack of the Virtual Sound effects (never used them) But, the file name scrolls during playback and is much easier to read. The EQsettings are much, much, much easier to set for custom sounds. There is a File option, don't remember that on the NH900. Allows you to customize how you want to display data files. More later, bottom line: I really like my RH10 regardless of the lack of some features. I will 98% of the time be using this unit in live music recording settings. It's far better with the OLED compared to the weak LCD (and even the 40ELK remote) of the NH900. The battery life savings of the OLED are very noticeable. I recorded 2 hours in PCM with the NiMH and the AA on Saturday night and I never came off the full battery charge until almost the end. Plus, this unit ships with the better battery the NH14 not that lame 900mAh that came with the NH900.

RH10 spec page, I did not scan the optional accessories page. There is no extra optical cable like what shipped with the NH900. There is no speed control like the NH900 and there is no line out function. But, that OLED screen...

Check out Reactive Sounds. You can get a standard Battery Box- "The Juice Box" or you can get a mic preamp that also serves as a battery box- that is the "Boost Box". I have that "Boost Box" and it has served me well. You get the benefits of the Battery Box with the Preamp Boost Box. No bass rolloff on either and running cardioids on the Boost Box, I haven't noticed any bass overwhelming the sound. I will be trying it outside out at festival this week in Florida using subcardioid elements. That will be a test of the bass. But, give Reactive a look, the quality is very good and the results, excellent. http://reactivesounds.com

I just bought a new RH10 from the Sony Style store in Boston last night. I gotta say I like it a lot. It was very cool to walk in and get my RH10, which they had placed on hold for me. I had tried through 2 different online vendors who kept telling me my order was in process for 3 or 4 days. Give me a break. I know I paid a little more than I should have ($314 once the tax was added) but it was cool to walk out of the store with my new RH10. I got the Black model and it's very beautiful. Feels very durable and I dare to say, smaller than my NH900. I don't have the Nh900 with me but once I get home, I plan to get them together for a comparison. The OLED is very nice and worth all the hassle I had to go through. No line out on the menu and the recorder can't record in MDLP. I never used the MDLP recorder on the NH900 and I will learn to deal without the line out. But, it's all worth it for the OLED and the feel of the RH10 construction. I am satisfied with the upgrade. Looks like Sony finally figured out how to package this unit. It was in a box in the display, not in some grotesque plastic mass hanging on a hook. They are treating it with some respect by making the packaging more geared to a display case, not hanging on a hook in Wally World. I appreciated how easy it was to get into the box instead of having to cut through plastic like a cheap Christmas toy. The remote is weak and so are the ear plugs but I don't plan on using this as a digital music player once I get off the airplane on my trip back home. This is a recording unit for me except for some playing around at times. I got the trusty old MZ-S1 for the digital music on the go... I will take some pictures over the weekend if anyone is interested. I will be recording my first show on Saturday night. Looking forward to watching that OLED recording meter display during the show. BTW, my NH900 is FOR SALE along with my RM-MC40ELK remote. Check it out in the classifieds. Ok, I gotta checkout of the hotel and get to the conference. Signing off as a new and happy RH10 owner, M

Just got a Black RH10. Need to sell my NH900 plus RM-MC40ELK remote. I bought all this in October 2004. I have taken great care of these. I have only used for recording shows. Very little use as a music player, less than 2 hours in that role and I have recorded probably 10 shows with it since Oct 2004. I also have a Philips repair/replace warranty (bought at Etronics.com) that is good until 10/2006 for the NH900. I have noted the 40ELK selling for $80 (includes shipping) if you buy it new on ebay. Mine has some very superficial scratches but I have not tried to polish them out yet. Nothing major. The NH900 is in excellent condition. I have all the original receipts, manuals and packaging. I am keeping the Hi-MD blank that shipped with the NH900. I am also keeping the original remote (it works with my RH10 :-) Here are some pictures: http://johnsonfamilyweb.net/NH900 PM with offers or send email to markATmrsoulmusicDOTinfo Gone to EBAY: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...item=5767355338 Check it out!

Thanks for the clarification. Canceled was probably the wrong choice of words.
-
Isn't Bass Rolloff basically cancelled when you use the Line In on your MD? It works basically for mic input preamps? Any clarification is appreciated (dex, A440)...

Try this for all your FLAC needs... http://mikewren.com/flac/

That's weird, my NH900 was shipped with a handy little optical cable. Go out to radio shack and get one for about $10.
-
Not sure why you had that problem. I have renamed on the MD before transferring in 2.3 without problems. Maybe next time, upload, erase the MD and then you can do what you want with the tracks (divide, combine, rename) without problems. What type of MD were you using?

Randy- Welcome. I would actually look at the 1st Generation models like the NH800 or NH900. The price should drop on those soon since the 2nd G's are just around the corner. Unless you really want mp3 capabilities, there's not a big reason to pay more for the 2nd G's. As for a mic, you can get the Giant Squid battery box and mic combos for around $80, which is very good and a decent combo that is easy to use. Those mics do a pretty good job. Or you can look at the standard mics from Sound Pros with their battery box. There binaurals sound pretty darn good for the price as well. Another alternative right now might be to use the mic input for recording your granddaughter and tourists sounds and then use the RS Attenuator cable route via the mic input for the loud steathly shows, etc Don't over look the guys at Reactive Sounds either. Their Auris mics have gotten some serious raves and you can use those with the mic input or battery box, etc. Really lots of good choices with mics that you can directly connect to your Hi-MD. I would forego the 2nd G's Hi-MD and focus on the NH900, NH-1 or NH800. I like the Nh900 because of the extra AA battery source and the line-out option. Welcome and good luck with your choice. Check out http://etronics.com for some good deals on the Hi-MDs. (Although they are currently out of stock on the NH900 and NH-1, I have bought several things from them without problem). Also, our classifieds might not be a bad place to look around... M

Since they don't have a AC adapter do these things run off the USB when recording from the USB? Seems like a big drain on the battery to have to use it for every download, etc.
